Movie Review : You Were Never Really Here

You Were Never Really Here
This film is mesmerizing! Joaquin Phoenix delivers an outstanding performance that is one of his best I’ve ever seen. The style of this film is unlike anything I’ve seen this year. This film is Brutal, different, shocking and memorable.

This film had very similar beats to the film Taxi Driver where a man takes law into his own hands and goes to retrieve a girl out of a dangerous situation. Now it’s not shot by shot the same but similar but even though it has similarities it is it’s own thing at the same time. It grabs you and brings you along on this tale of isolation and loneliness surrounded with great lengths of brutal force throughout the film. It is not for everyone as their are elements in the film that can be disturbing to watch but I do recommend this film not just for the great execution of the story but the way it was done.

This film is acted well, greatly written and fantastically directed by Lynne Ramsey this film will have you thinking and talking about it long after it’s over what a cinematic experience this film was and a experience worth taking.

Rated R : for strong violence, disturbing and grisly images, language and brief nudity

This film tells the story of a hit man who dose hits on people but when he gets told to retrieve a girl from a sex trafficking business it becomes more complicated then he thought

Joaquin Phoenix : Phoenix delivers a top notch hard hitting lead performance. Joaquin has been one of those actors that doesn’t do a film unless he believes the material is good and he always gives his all going all the way with his performance and I appreciate that deeply about him as an actor. In this film he again ignited the screen with an explosion of emotion and I say that because he dose it in a way that is very very complex. For the most part he doesn’t talk that much unless he’s been spoken to but we see what’s going on in his mind and what he thinks at all times from his incredible ability to be emotionally expressive onscreen with his great acting abilities and showing great emotional depth as well in the film. When he isn’t talking he is unpredictable but then can explode in such colours of rage and anger in the snap of a finger and for him to be able to show such layers and range in this role and performance was captivating to witness. Theirs a part in the film where he just sits in a diner and cry’s and without a word or even dialogue exchanged between you feel for him and you see how genuine and real he’s been onscreen he brilliant in the film. He brings layers of brutality, anger, sadness and isolation to the performance wrapped into one and he captures the character perfectly. He shows so much in the film by just watching his eyes the way he’s able to express his thoughts and feelings through his expressions was amazing.  He delivers one of his finest performances to date.

Lynne Ramsey : She slices through this film incredibly well with her sparkling direction. This filmmaker I am aware of as she directed we need to talk about Kevin a few years back that was a critical hit but since then she hasn’t done that much. Her work on this film is just astonishing to see her pure ability to showcase a style that is so different and give you a cinematic experience that is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. She brings the strokes of violence, disturbing undertones into it but never over uses the tones giving it a even keel and balancing it out greatly. As well she will show material of character background and never answer it she shows it but it is up to the audience to answer and I loved how she did that. She showcases great strength here at the helm of this film getting great work from the cast as well as a well written script and kept the audience intrigued to the very end a truly well directed film by Lynne Ramsey.

The Score : The music in this film was very much like the music used in Good Time. The use of electric and deep drum beats really brought the screen to life with its loud uses of sound really expressing the scene perfectly with its great use of music a truly great composed score.
