Movie Review : Love, Simon
Love, Simon is a masterful coming of age story that captures the youth of a teenager and the struggles of coming out about your sexuality. This film is one of the most honest chronicles of high school I've seen since Perks of being a wallflower and Mean Girls. It's acted terrifically by a fantastic lead performance from Nick Robinson and Josh Duhamel giving top notch acting in the film. The story also at hand will have your heart warmed when leaving this film as its a such a positive film and showing people that it's ok to come out and I love that message the film brought me to tears it made me laugh and everything between.
This film is just so happy and leaves the audience with a great message to walk away with. It's ability to showcase just brutal honesty and not sugarcoat it was what I loved it was such a realistic depiction of high school and it was funny, dramatic it had all the right parts and just worked. This film is so freaking enjoyable you'll be leaving with a big grin on your face Love, Simon is magnificent is one of the most enjoyable films I've seen all year.
Rated PG - 13 : thematic Elements, sexual references language
This film takes place around a Teenager named Simon who is like you and me but he's got one big secret he's Gay and he's finding it hard to come out to his friends and family
Nick Robinson : Robinson truly shines in this film showcasing his great talent. Nick has shown up in big blockbusters like Jurassic World but we haven't yet seen him explore his more emotional talent onscreen which he dose here and damn dose he do a good job. He plays a character named Simon struggling to tell his friends and Family that he's Gay but he doesn't want that to change anything and the way he was able to walk the wire and deliver the performance was fantastic. He showcases the characters greatly in his emotional strength and comedic timing onscreen. In the film when you see him really wanting and pushing to tell people that he's gay it seems very genuine and authentic he brings the character to such life by bringing such passion and commitment to the role. Layering it in comedic bits but mostly really well developed emotional range throughout the film. Their are moments of sorrow and triumph for him in the film and you are with him all the way and you really are invested in his character and performance at hand. He can break your heart with just a look in his eye or erupt the room in laughter with one line Nick Robinson really brings his acting to the full front with a truly terrific performance showcasing his great talent with a outstanding performance.
Josh Duhamel : Josh surprised the hell out of me! Duhamel is a character actor who's popped up in numerous films from When In Rome to films like the transformers trilogy. But I've never seen Josh sink his teeth into a really emotional role expect in Save Haven besides that film that's really it. Here he plays the dad of Simon and isn't in the film for most of it but when he is you notice him. He's hilarious in the moments he shares onscreen bringing great fun to the character and being a joy to watch. His comedic timing was fantastic but then halfway through the film he takes a turn and their is one scene that stands out. The scene in which he talks to Simon about being ok to be gay and it's such a powerful scene the way he plays it out brought me to tears. It's very much like the father son scene in last years Call Me By Your Name but the way Josh just was so emotionally bare and incredibly real onscreen was captivating to witness. He just seemed like he meant every word and was so in the moment I loved his turn in this film as the father giving great lengths of comedy and serious moments to Overall Josh delivers one of his finest performances yet.
Greg Berlanti : Greg gives great strong direction here! The former Green Lantern writer has redeemed himself hugely by his work in the directors chair on this film! His style on this film like I said earlier was a mash of perks of being a wallflower and Mean Girls mashed into one and I loved that. He brought such honest and truth to the film of what high school is like but also how it is to come out and he didn't sugar coat or glamorize anything he shows it for how it is and I admire his honesty brought to the screen. As well as being able to balance out the comedy and drama aspect of it as well. He never made it feel jokey or a straight up drama but he knew when to let the comedy take a back seat and when to let the more emotional scenes speak but one never overpowered the other. As well he got you invested in these characters and was able to tell a terrific story at hand as well that keeps the audience intrigued. Overall Greg leaves you with a warm heart giving a great message by the end and leaving you with a good feeling in your heart and just happy Greg shows great strength as a director as its shown here greatly overall great work
