Movie Review : A Wrinkle In Time

A Wrinkle In Time
This film is a visual spectacle but sadly that is all it is a visual spectacle. This film falls short of depth, character development and slow pacing topping it all of with nothing really exciting to grasp onto. I had quite high expectations for the film since it’s one of my personal favourite books I wanted to see the film and from what the promotional trailers showed it looked not amazing but good sadly that’s all I can really say that it’s not one of the worst films of the year but I also cannot day it’s a great film it’s underwhelming that had so much potential to have been better.

First off where the film really lost me was the over use of CGI effects thrown in the film. I get that it’s a fantasy film and their will be a lot of CGI to paint that world onscreen but it relied to heavily on it when it could of used practical effects it took me out of the film and the story with it using CGI as it’s crunch to really drive the film which sadly I didn’t buy into.

Secondly, the way the characters are shown in the film make me not invested in them whatsoever. I’m sure the actors were trying their absolute hardest but the main three cast members the child actors I didn’t buy their chemistry I felt as their was no connection between the three they felt hollow and I didn’t care for them. The film was so overblown with the visual aspect it didn’t pay enough attention to the more important aspects of the story. Which is the characters and when the film is done you won’t remember who the characters were they weren’t memorable and nor did I care for them.

Lastly, their was no real excitement to be shown throughout the film. Sure their was great amazing shots of the world but their talking from one scene to another and theirs no real sense of adventure or thrilling action that really grips you. It just goes from one scene to another showing more talking then running then talking and it just let me down I wanted to be excited gripping my seat. But ultimately I was just to be quite honest bored and it was a big let down. The only noticeable positive I could bring out of this was Chris Pine’s great Supporting performance but that was it really.

A Wrinkle In Time had all the right ingredients but untimely due to the kid friendly rating and the over blown CGI effects the story and deep hearted message gets lost in the mess resulting in a disappointing film.

Rated PG : for thematic elements and some peril

When a girls father goes missing for reasons unknown she is brought to a mysterious world to find him

Chris Pine : Chris Delivers a shockingly brilliant performance here. I didn’t think Pine would be the one to chew up the scenery in this film but here we are and he is great in the film. He plays the father of the main character he is obsessed with finding the big breakthrough in his work and gets so wrapped up in it he shunned out his family. The way he plays it onscreen is so painfully believable you can see that he cares for his family and loves his daughter. The moment he sees his daughter he is just so full of joy it washes over him in great happiness and Pine shows it in a way that is genuine and Believable. His delivery of each line was amazing he could be having a heart to heart moment or about to break to tears and you become so wrapped up in his performance you can’t help but love it. Overall Chris delivers the best performance of the film and is for sure a highlight for the film.

Ava DuVernay : Ava has sadly let me down here. Her work on Selma was outstanding so obviously I was thrilled to hear she was directing this. She sadly has really disappointed me with her lack of passion for the film. I just felt like it wasn’t their she didn’t inject the characters with anything meaningful they just were their and then she couldn’t capture the thrilling action instead she traded it in for overblown CGI and then had very little emotional punch scenes that are the driving force of the book. As a fan of the book and of her I’m let down and she could of done so much better. The tone was all over the place one moment it’s dark the next theirs comedy she never really stays on one firm path for the style that she wanted the film to go for. I feel if she was to make it R rated and really go for the dark tone as the book is it would of been so much better because you can tell she was trying to push for that but The studio wanted a water downed version for kids which really restrained her creatively. Overall Ava let me down and i know she can do better I’ve seen it but sadly this film dose not show her at her finest work but at one of her weakest directional works I’ve seen.
