Movie Review : Stronger
This film is a terrific drama that will hit you like a punch in the heart! This film is based on the true story of a man who got lost his legs after the Boston boning and it’s about how he has to function and deal with it after the tragedy. The way they capture it and deal with the story was well handled and they didn’t sugar coat any of it they showed it for how it was showing it as accurately as possible. As well the performances given from Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany are powerhouses in the film giving both award caliber acting on their part. This film is full of heart that will leave you moved and cheering for how strong the human spirit is Stronger is terrific film worth seeing.
Rated R : for language throughout, some graphic injury images, and brief sexuality/nudity
Based on a true story this film tells the story of a man named Jeff Bauman who lost his legs after the tragic Boston bombing and then he has to learn how to function after
Jake Gyllenhaal : Gyllenhaal delivers on all fronts with another terrific performance in this film! Jake has given great work time and time again that constantly gets overlooked by the award voters which ticks me off really but this performance will be hard for them to overlook. He plays Jeff Bauman a real life person which this happened to and he gave a performance that was respectful and also at the same time trying to be as accurate as him as possible. Which I truly give great credit for him doing so and he gives gut wrenching emotion in this film that shook me to the core. In the film in the beginning you can see the happiness and sheer optimistic look he has then after the tragedy he finds it harder to grasp onto positivity but the effort to try is shown and the way Jake was able to show chase that onscreen was powerful. Their are moments of true struggle that are hard to watch and he really throws himself in the deep end to show how painful it must of been and adding that with his tremendous emotion brought to it just made it heartbreaking and Jake dose just that but also brings out so many other emotions too. Theirs a moment in the film that stood out for me two scenes actually one being him asking his girlfriend to stay and she leaves and he drags himself out of the car trying to get her to come back and the sheer sadness in his voice and Panic in his voice to the tears streaming down his face were so genuine and real you are mesmerized by what he’s bringing to the film. The other scene was him upset when his girlfriend says he never shows up and he explodes in such anger saying how he did and the reason I chose those two scenes to tell you about is because the way he was able to give such layers of emotion and be so real and raw onscreen was moving and it showed how committed he is to every frame of this film. Jake shows the pain of the struggle but also the great hope as well giving an as accurate portrayal of this person as possible giving another outstanding performance that shouldn’t be shunned out by the Oscars the work here is phenomenal!
Tatiana Maslany : Tatiana gives one of the best supporting performances of the year! This actress we all know is well known for her great work on the small screen for orphan Black. A show which I haven’t seen or seen any prior work of hers before seeing this film after seeing what she brought To the film I’m definitely watching everything she’s in. She’s beyond excellence in this film in every way from her great emotion brought to the screen. In the film she plays the girl who is with Jeff and is their running the day of the bombing and after is by his side through it all. The way she brings that person to the screen and portrays it all is incredible to watch. Their are scenes where she is just having quiet moments with Jake and is tearing up and it gets to you or when she’s yelling at Jeff’s mom because she isn’t thanked for the amount of help she dose. The amount of commitment she brings is brilliant you can truly see that she cares for him and works day after day to care for him and your heart goes out to her and Tatiana portrays as accurate and real as possible. Giving some of the most moving scenes I’ve seen all year. The range of emotions and how raw and open she was was amazing and the layers as well she showcased was tremendous to see she just captivated me from the beginning to the very end. Overall Tatiana delivers a performance that hits you like a punch to the heart that is riveting to witness unfold onscreen.
David Gordon Green : David delivers top notch direction on this great bio pic. David did the film justice by staying as real and authentic to the events and people as possible. He made sure he respected the families and did made sure it was done respectfully and honestly as possible. He didn’t sugar coat anything he shows it for how it happened and I admire the realism he brought to it and didn’t hold anything back. He shows it all the way through from the incident to the struggle after and the hope giving the audience a roller coaster of emotion lead by a terrific cast getting great work out of them. He doesn’t make the film feel sappy but just real and truthful to the events he directed the film in a way I haven’t seen in a long time. It wasn’t your the run of the mill bio pic he made sure this stood out and it did most notably due to the fantastic direction and performances. Overall David dose a outstanding job at bringing this film to screen as real and honest as possible.
