Movie Review : Lady Bird

Lady Bird
This film is a sparkling capture at the look of youth and adolescence and it's brilliantly shown by masterful director and screenwriter Greta Gerwig! This film is one of the years best pictures and I'm not just saying that due to the amazing reception the film is getting but I really do mean it the film is one of the years best. It has truly outstanding performances from the cast most noticeably being Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf as well as a incredibly sharp screenplay that has great humour that cuts through the scene so well but then can break your heart with the more smaller moments as well.

This film was a perfect representation of youth from the compelling narrative to the truly great performances shown onscreen Lady Bird soars brilliantly making you laugh, cry and everything in between this film is a truly brilliant piece of film I highly recommend people check out.

Rated R : language, sexual content, brief graphic nudity and teen partying

The film revolves around a girl named Christine but gosh by the name Lady Bird and follows her on her journey through adolescence and trying to survive as a teenager

Saoirse Ronan : Saoirse delivers a brilliant performance in this film. As we know Ronan is able to capture and do dramatic parts well as shown in her previous work like Brooklyn and the lovely bones. But for me this performance she's given here outshines those because she really gives something we haven't seen before from her that is just amazing to watch her do onscreen. What you may think I'm referring to is her ability to mix her comedic talent with her more serious emotion and it resulted in a terrific performance. She plays a girl just trying to survive being a teenager and everything that comes with it and she plays the role so very well you can't but love what's she bringing to the film.  Whenever she comes onscreen she brought such great layers of depth but also a light hearted sense to her role that was just perfect. Her emotion in the film was tremendous their are scenes where she's very rebellious and very sarcastic but then can break your heart with the slightest crack in her voice and for me that's incredible. I couldn't see anyone else playing this role she just fit the character so well she showed so many sides character wise and emotionally too she just is purely eclectic to watch onscreen from start to finish. She makes you laugh and cry overall Ronan delivers another fantastic Oscar caliber performance that just lights up the screen.

Laurie Metcalf : Laurie delivers a heartbreaking supporting performance in this film! Laurie Metcalf plays the mother of the main character in this film and she could of easily just been your typical mother and just been erased into the background but she really makes her character and performance known in this film. She was able to capture the great wit and humour well but also be able to just give gut wrenching emotion that brings you to tears. She goes toe to toe with Ronan and really makes herself known in the film by giving a very entertaining performance as the mother. Their are moments where the slightest and smallest words could make you laugh just from a remark but then utter silence just break you she was great at walking that line bringing serious emotional depth to her character that felt very natural and real. Overall Laurie delivers an amazing supporting turn in the film that shouldn't go unnoticed.

Greta Gerwig : Greta is a master behind the lens truly genius work given here! For her first ever directional debut she knocks it out of the park with her perfect direction and amazing writing. First let's talk about her writing she gives one of the best screenplays ever put to paper truly. She captured the look of youth so perfectly by really understanding what it is like and being so incredibly real with the characters which made the writing so sharp. As well as her ability to apply comedy and drama into her screenplay just formulated so well and exploded onscreen perfectly it was amazing writing she gives great dialogue amazingly written characters that feel lived in and a well rounded plot that will have you laughing and crying. Now for her direction she did a marvellous job her style to have it as an indie film was so smart I loved the vibe she gives off in the film. She takes advantage of the small setting and truly explores it making it a character as well as having great tones throughout the film. She was able to give us great lengths of comedy without it feeling overdone but also having great drama and emotion too both equaling out perfectly giving the right amount of both tones. And lastly the colours she gives is explosive she drenched it in colour and really makes the frame pop I loved her direction and writing I cannot wait to see what she dose next because she left me speechless with her work on this a truly masterful piece of direction and writing by Gerwig.

The Lighting : the lighting of the film was beautiful! The film had this very old fashioned feel to it but mixed with so many colours it just exploded onscreen with so many layers of colours giving the perfect look and feel to the frame and really making the frame stand out. The mixture of so many colours were perfectly used and deserve to be recognized for its great lighting overall amazing work here.
