Movie Review : Murder On The Orient Express
This film is a nail biting suspense movie that will have you guessing to the end. This film first off could of been done very wrong but Kenneth Branagh was able to direct this film in the best way and act it as well in such great fashion you can't help but have a great time with this film. Sure you can say this remake was not needed due to the already great film we got back in the day. But people have to remember some remakes are more memorable then some originals not always but sometimes such as Al Pacino's Scarface that's a remake and more people know that as the original Scarface which in fact it was a remake off the 30's original film. So I will say this remake was needed to be able to breath new life into this terrific and juicy tale.
Every star in this film is perfectly cast and all of them do a splendid job with what screen time they had. I hate to say who stands out from the rest as the film had such a solid cast but Kenneth surprised me and really gave a truly solid performance that is truly fantastic to watch as well as Johnny Depp's supporting performance as well is also terrific to see as well. The film is acted incredibly well it felt like these characters felt lived in which I loved that you really bought them as their characters.
The film visually is gorgeous! The cinematography is breathtaking to witness as well as the detailed production design and costumes and hairstyling all serving extraordinary use in the film really brining the time period and the environment to life it's visually incredible as well as production wise. The only problem I would have with the the film is its pacing at times it dose slow down and could pick up in places but besides that the film is an enjoyable retelling on a classic tale that will have you entertained from beginning to end.
This film centres around a group of people on their travels on the orient express when a man is found dead the detective on the train must find out who on the train killed this man before he strikes again
Rated PG - 13 : violence and thematic elements
Kenneth Branagh : Kenneth gives truly a remarkable performance in this film! Kenneth impressed me with his acting skills with his work in my week with Marilyn which he was truly great in but I would have to say this performance here surpasses it greatly. The character he plays is this world famous detective and he could of easily of given a mediocre performance since he's also directing it but he didn't and I loved that he really committed to his craft and gave a gripping performance. Theirs great range we are able to witness from Kenneth throughout the film you'll see him just walking around calmly and analyzing every last detail but then be able to just rip across the screen with such passion and anger in his heart it's incredible to see him give such a layered piece of work here. I thought I'll be honest I thought he wasn't going to be the best performance and he was and I'm so happy he was because from the first to the last frame your eyes are stuck on him because he has this quality and the way he carries himself to the line delivery of his character in the film that is just so electrifying you can't help but be memorized by his performance. He shows great range as I said and emotion making you feel like he's really lived as that character and he gets you to care and root for him as well. He has this ability to be able to switch up his tone midway through a scene that is so impressive to watch it's just brilliant overall Kenneth delivers a top notch performance that shouldn't be overlooked.
Johnny Depp : Johnny gives a great performance as this sly gangster in such a great fashion. Johnny plays this gangster who we know little about and gets revealed more throughout as the film goes on but for most of his onscreen time Depp is very quiet. But he was able to be so expressive through his emotion and able to tell the audience what he's thinking without uttering a word which was brilliant. But also when he did speak he could go from polite to terrifying within seconds which shows how great range he has. Theirs one particular scene where he's eating with someone and their talking and it starts off calm and very quiet but then the tension builds and by the end of that scene he's chilling the ability he had to be able like I said switch within the scene tone wise and emotion is impressive as well as keeping us intrigued with his character. Johnny delivers on all fronts giving a truly entertaining performance that is both terrifying and mysterious and he delivers that marvellously.
Kenneth Branagh : Kenneth gave terrific direction on his part on this film! I give him great praise due to the reason of the expectations that was set for this project. Their was the original he had to try and live up to and then their was the book also so their definitely was challenges for him to be able to deliver a remake that would do justice and which he dose brilliantly. What I liked about what he did with the film was making every character have a moment of suspension what I mean by that is he kept you guessing until the end of who it could be and then pulls the rug from under you and shocking you with a result you don't see coming. As well I loved his chose to shoot on a real moving locomotive it was so effective and really contributed to the films Suspense and was a great character for the film. Which leads me into my second comment he created amazing tension and suspense in such a small environment it isn't easy to be able to create a thrilling story in one place it can be done well if done right and he dose so greatly he was able to keep you on your toes the whole time. As well he brings one of the greatest cast ensembles ever truly it's a fantastic cast which he got all great work from. He had this stylish old mystery feel to it that just worked and was so effective overall Kenneth delivers on all levels giving truly spectacular direction on his part.
The Lighting : The great colours were fantastic! The films colours were so effective and worked so well tone wise with the films story and it just made it pop with this grey and blue tone that just makes you feel like your back in the 30's it was really well used I loved it great work.
The Cinematography : The camerawork was amazing! The shots of the train and overhead angles were Marvelous. It really was able to explore all these places of the train and really get the tension to rise with the camera but also showcase the beautiful scenery as well through the lens it is so beautifully shot you can't help but love it amazing work here truly amazing.
The Score : The music was great. The music in this film was perfect for the tone and the style and era it was set it. It was good at being able to raise the tension but also remain loyal to the time it was set it with having this old fashioned sound to it which blended perfectly. Overall a greatly composed score.
