Movie Review : Marshall
Marshall
This film is a solid well acted and well crafted courtroom drama. This film is a true story about a rather famous attorney named Thurgood Marshall who was quite the guy and I mean that in the best way. This film is about him and this trial and it is acted incredibly well by Chadwick Boseman and Josh Gad. This film could of easily been just another by the numbers courtroom drama which we have seen many times again and again but this film didn't just fade into the background it really stood out.
How you may ask due to the fantastic performances fulfilled by the actors wrapped with a truly intriguing story and case I didn't know centred on a attorney more people should know because he is so important to history. It makes me sad that this man hasn't been talked about much and that I didn't know about him until after viewing this film. I am glad though that they made this film because it is a damn good picture with great performances and a compelling narrative that will keep you intrigued to the end. Marshall is a film I definitely recommend people go check out.
This film centres around a attorney named Thurgood Marshall a man who represents people because of their race and takes on a case that throws him curveballs he never saw coming.
Rated PG - 13 : for mature thematic content, sexuality, violence and some strong language
Chadwick Boseman : Chadwick once again dazzles the screen with another terrific leading performance once again! Back before the world saw him as Black Panther from the Marvel films he did a small film called 42 which I absolutely loved him in. In that film he showcased incredible talent and great emotion which he brings here in tremendous fashion. In the film he plays this well established man of the law Thurgood Marshall and this guy was just full of passion and great political views he spoke like a preacher at times and the way Chadwick was able to bring that person to the full front onscreen was fantastic just fantastic. From the first frame you are into his performance and just swept away with his great work in this film. He really became Thurgood Marshall he walked like him had this whisky gruff sound to his voice he just really committed to the role giving his all to his performance which really pays off. Not only is he giving the person he's playing justice but you forget that it's Chadwick and you see this man onscreen which was great how he could transform onscreen like that. He was able to channel once again great emotional depth giving incredible amounts of raw emotion. When someone would say something hard hitting to him you could see it hit him like a wave and he would deliver the line back in such a way he made it feel real and just authentic I loved his emotion he could be so calm and collected then the next just explode in such passion giving words of a speech that rip across the screen. I love to see Chadwick back to the dramatic genre as he hasn't done one like this in a while and I would love to see him do more because he has such a talent for it overall Chadwick once again showcases a fantastic performance in this courtroom drama.
Josh Gad : Josh Gad surprised me! What I mean by that is when I first saw him in this project and I watched the trailer I thought he would be good but drama isn't his genre he has ever done before so I didn't know if he would be any good. I am so pleased to say he is spectacular in this film truly I mean that he crafts and delivers a outstanding supporting turn in this film that was great to watch onscreen. He's known for Frozen and more comedy but after seeing him in this damn he needs to do more dramas because it is such a strong suit for him he showcases sides and layers to him in this film I haven't ever seen him explore before. In the Start he seems like he just didn't want the case and then you slowly see him become really invested in it and the great layers we see from this character was great because in the long haul we get to see Josh's great range as an actor as well. In the film he has a few scenes that stood out for me as scene stealing moments in the film where he truly shines through. He delivers such passion and at times intensity in his role and delivers it so brilliantly you can't take your eyes off of him. He also was able to have great moments of dry humour to that worked perfectly his mix of dry humour and dramatic emotion worked so well it resulted in a truly great supporting and career turn for him. He got me invested into his character and performance showing great depth in his role emotionally and was so compelling to watch onscreen this is a performance from Gad that should not go unnoticed.
Reginald Hudlin : This director knows how to do a damn good courtroom drama! This director I am unfamiliar with only his producing credits have I seen with his involvement on Django Unchained besides that not much really. What I loved about his work on this film was the courtroom itself becoming a character in many ways. What I mean by that is some courtroom dramas it had courtroom scenes but is shot around other aspects and many other side plots but what he did here was opposite of that. He did what they did back in the days of cinema where it's a true courtroom drama where for 99% of it is in the courtroom and I loved that aspect of it. Little to no films do that approach anymore and it's been lost and I really have missed that approach to the genre and be brings it back brilliantly with this film. As well he really made you feel as if you were in the 1940's with the great sets and locations got you to feel as if you were back in the 40's I loved the look and feel he brought to it. To add as well the performances he was able to get from his terrific cast at the same time being able to capture and get the audiences attention and keep them Intrigued by the story at hand. He just delivers great direction on all fronts with this film as well as the tone and messages he gets the audience to walk away with a great moral lesson to learn from. I am so glad he helmed this film it could of easily under the hands of someone else just become another courtroom drama but he made it stand out in the best possible way and mostly due to the great direction at hand overall fantastic direction here.
The Lighting : I loved the colours in this film. The colours in the film had this brown look to it that just worked so perfectly with the tone and feel of the film. It is set in the 40's and the colour pallet really gets you to feel that with the great vibe it gives off in the film as well at times showing darker tones for the more serious moments. They just really did a knock out job with the lighting on this film really breathing the era it was set in to life great work guys.
