Movie Review : Last Flag Flying
Last Flag Flying
This film was enjoyable with solid performances and a heavy message! This film has great talent from Cranston Lawrence and Carell all delivering fantastic performances Cranston being the real stand out in this film. The film carried many heavy tones throughout the film of why we fight in war and what’s the purpose to other questions as how do we deal with grief.
All of which are handled well by Richard LinkLater at the helm of this project. It had great work from the cast but the only complaint or issue I would have with it was the pacing of it all. The film felt at times dragged out where it could of picked up in places. Besides that the film was a well acted film with heavy tones that will have you asking and thinking long after the film is over. Last Flag Flying was a enjoyable film.
Rated R : language throughout
It takes place in 2003 and when a mans son dies in action from war he reconnects with his friends who he served with in the war to bury his son with him.
Steve Carell : Steve delivers a harrowing piece of acting in this film that is tremendous to witness. Earlier this year he gave a great performance in another film Battle of the sexes and once again dominates the screen with yet another great performance. In this film many people will find him quiet for a lot of the film which could bug people but for me I really liked what he did with his role. For the reason why is because you learn and understand why he’s quiet as the film goes on. And he gives this very reserved and restrained kind of performance which I haven’t seen Carell do before. He transforms in the film with the weight he gains to the facial hair Steve really becomes this character and you believe him. Sometimes all it took was a look from his eyes to understand and see how he feels and it speaks volumes. You can see the Weight on his shoulders and the pain in his eyes he breaks your heart with such a emotional performance. Their are times where he’s in tears and you feel for him and it gets hard to watch Because he’s in such pain but he is so committed to every frame giving a truly gut wrenching performance. He explores places I haven’t seen Steve explore before and he also shares fantastic chemistry with his co stars overall Carell delivers a powerful emotional performance we haven’t seen before and is truly something special.
Bryan Cranston : Cranston delivers a fantastic supporting performance in this film! Bryan also earlier this year gave tremendous work in Wakefield and once again delivers another great performance in this film. From the start we quickly learn he is the maverick of the three and the more comedic relief which could of been tiring but he balances it so well contributing great emotion to it as well. His timing comedically was perfect and knew exactly when to say what and the jokes always landed it never was overdone or awkwardly placed in a scene it was perfect. As well as his more emotional scenes too he gives great emotional depth in some scenes that tug on your heart strings and you can tell he’s speaking from the heart and that he means it. He was able to balance the comedy and emotional aspect of his performance so well and it worked perfectly. He in my opinion stole the show due to his great range he makes you laugh and emotional at times and just delivers a truly fantastic supporting turn in this film. I definitely can see award consideration for his work in the film overall Bryan gives another great piece of work here.
Richard LinkLater : Richard impressed me! LinkLater is no surprise when it comes to drama as he has done the before sunset franchise and Boyhood but nothing like this. This film is a drama with real heavy tones that could of gone very wrong if not done right but he was able to keep everything afloat and give a great piece of film with great work from his cast. He really steps out of his comfort zone and takes on tones that he hasn’t really done before and it pays off he gives the audience serious opinions and questions to think about long after it’s over. As well since it such a heavy topic he could of made it very serious which it is but he also lets great lengths of comedy into the film to give the audience a break at times from the serious tones and it pays off the comedy and drama mix worked well. His only problem was the pacing it dragged out at parts but besides that LinkLater delivers another well crafted film once again. He also got great chemistry from his main cast and brings great comedy serious emotion and overall an enjoyable film to raise some questions that should be asked and brought to light. Overall LinkLater has done it once again with another great film only LinkLater could of done.
