Movie Review : The Florida Project

The Florida Project
This  is a masterful film at capturing youth and innocence of a child and wonder! This is a fantastic film with a great cast Willem Dafoe and Brooklyn Prince  being the stand outs as well. This film is terrific documentation of youth and the imagination of a child as well as showing the heartbreaking reality people face day to day. This film will have you smiling, crying and will feel like a punch to the heart this film is a must see I highly recommend.

Rated R : for language throughout, disturbing behavior, sexual references and some drug material

This film revolves around a mother with a child and the motel they live in as harsh as the conditions are this child tries her best to make what she can out of where she is having adventures everyday.

Willem Dafoe : Dafoe gives a return to form with his great work in this film. Dafoe has proven time and time again that he's a solid actor with great performances in Platoon and the spider man franchise. So it was nice to see him return to his dramatic roots and deliver a truly fantastic supporting performance in this movie. In the film he plays the manager of the motel and he could of easily of just given a by the numbers performance but he didn't do that he put grit into his role and really committed to his character. Every time he popped up onscreen he just captured my attention with his fantastic charisma and great energy he injected into his performance. You can see how much he cares for his residents and his job he brought such emotion and great layers to his role. Theirs a specific scene where he's fed up with a certain resident and just yells and is full of anger and you can see the angry in his eyes and in his voice he holds nothing back giving such great emotion throughout the film. He Just was fantastic in this film come award season I wouldn't be surprised if I hear his name come when nominations get announced. This isn't just a performance by Dafoe but he really invests himself in the role really giving a committed and emotionally enjoyable performance. Overall Dafoe gives his best work in years with his great supporting turn in this film.

Brooklyn Prince : Brooklyn delivers a tour de force performance in this film. Brooklyn Pierce gives her first onscreen debut with this film which shocked me due to her incredible talent. For such a young actress to deliver this kind of work in her first film is incredible. She plays the daughter of a mother who is struggling to get by and she tries to make the most of her living conditions by having as much fun as she can. The way she brings it to the screen was mesmerizing. She gives great lengths of emotion in her performance. You can see she is worried about her mom but tries to not let it get her down and she tries to be positive but she also has her equal share of heartbreaking moments in the film also. Theirs a scene where she's just sobbing and delivering her dialogue with such realism and sparkling delivery she breaks your  heart by and it felt so real and genuine. For such a young actress to deliver this kind of powerful performance is outstanding and even though she's a child actor the Oscars really need to pay attention to her work in this because she's totally worthy of an Oscar for this if not the least a nomination. Because her work speaks volumes in this film and it deserves to be recognized. She just gives so many layers of emotion to this character showing the fun spirit of a child and its innocence but also her showing such maturity and heartbreaking side to her it's a fantastic performance that just blew me away. Overall Brooklyn Prince delivers a captivating performance that will amaze you.

Sean Baker : Sean gives fantastic direction and writing on this film! Sean did an incredible job with this film that left me speechless. Not only did he direct this but he wrote produced and edited the film which is amazing but as for the direction and writing go he is brilliant. He was able to capture the sheer realism of poverty and how living conditions can be this bad and how some people sadly live like this he rooted it in such reality it felt like a documentary. I loved that feel he brought to it because the entire cast is all unknown actors except for Dafoe which made the film feel even more real because then it felt like your everyday people and not actors which approach I loved that he brought to it. His style is fantastic really showing the innocence and fun of childhood and really making that the main focus but also not shying away from the darker elements and keeping an even balance on both tones. His direction was great but same can be said for his sharp and well written dialogue as well. On top of getting great performances from his cast he kept me intrigued all the way through with this great story and great actors onscreen. Sean Baker has crafted a beautiful film and knocks it out of the park with his great writing and direction.

The Lighting : The colours in the film were so explosive! The lighting in the film was fantastic it just was so expressive in its choice of colours to showcase this film. It had this pink and just vibrant and loud look to it colour wise and it was amazing. It matched the tone and look of it perfectly and just really did a fantastic job at helping contribute to the film in amazing ways with its colours.

The Score : the music in this film is so beautiful! The composed music in the film is perfectly constructed and melodies that just get into your soul. The beats of the film fit the tone and really helped be so expressive in so many scenes which made or so more effective due to the great score. Overall an amazing piece of music that you can't help but love.
