Movie Review : Mother!

Mother!
This film is a huge disappointment! This film has been receiving harsh reviews to great praise for the film. So the film has been an interesting analogy among critics and audiences. This film is said to delve into Religion as Jenifer Lawrence represented as mother nature and Javier Bardem as God. Now I do not mind those elements being brought to the screen what I have a problem with is that isn’t the film they told us it would be.

This film was marketed heavily on Horror making it look like this very intense horror film we thought we were going to get that is why it looked so interesting due to that aspect. Not only did it misrepresent what it actually was it went into a totally different direction and the same problem happened earlier this year with another film

“It Comes At Night”. It was misrepresented and audiences hated the film and critics liked it. But it shows how strong Marketing plays into a film yes we all like surprises but when you make the whole film something totally different then to what you marketed that’s just misleading. I get if you want to try new things trust me I have seen some really weird movies but by misrepresenting it just left audience’s cheated and lied to if you said right off the bat it delved into Religion and was an Indie Film then maybe it would have been received better.

The Film had great potential it had such a strong cast from Jennifer Lawrence, to Javier Bardem to Ed Harris. Sadly most of the talent is wasted or seen for very little of the film. Michelle Pfeiffer who people called a standout and an Oscar Contender is seen very little in this film she was fine I wouldn’t call it Oscar caliber but it would have been nice to seen her longer then just five minutes. The cast was so underused in this film it was a shame. As far as acting goes the performances were ok they were nothing spectacular or worth writing about to be honest. I cant write a single performance in my review for this film due to the lack of dialogue from the supporting cast and Jennifer Lawrence just made Facial Expressions as if she just went on the tower of terror. And Bardem was absent for most of the scenes so there is no substance I can write about their performance on.

Daron Aronofsky tries to muster a thought provoking film with serious messages intertwined into the plot that just came across as messy and damn confusing. I think he is a great filmmaker but this film he has made is not entertaining I think what he thought if as the premises sounded incredible but the translation from his vision to screen didn’t translate well. Overall Mother is a disappointing, wrongly marketed, slow paced film that will have you talking about it long after it is over.

This Film Tells The Story of a couple who live in a house by the country side. The husband is struggling from writers block to finish his great American Novel and His wife is trying to fix up the house but when fame comes with his books it isn’t always in the best of ways

Rated R : for strong disturbing violent content, some sexuality, nudity and language

Daron Aronofsky : Darron Aronofsky gives his worst and most confusing film yet! This visionary has given great pieces of film from Black Swan, The Wrestler and even produced Jackie. Daron is great at directing but this is just a huge misstep for him. He made the film seem like this horror, eerie film that pulled people in but totally mislead the audience by giving something totally different. I am all for thought provoking films but this film is just so confusing. His biggest problem was being able to properly explain and tell the narrative because since he made it all about Religion and then tried to mix it with Horror the concept he had for the film totally gets bogged down by the different styles going on one moment he makes it a Horror or attempts to anyway the next it is a Religious film and the next it is about mother nature. So much stuff was going on he lost me as a viewer through the film and it just came across as odd and disturbing. His actors cast in this film were so underused I would of liked if he could of gotten more screen time for each actor. Because we didn’t and we didn’t get that connection we are supposed to get with the character since their so brief we cant establish who they are and the actors performance as well. I Think Aron just dropped the ball with this film I hope he learns from this so in the future he properly markets his films better and leaves the audaince amazed and not pissed off like many were leaving the theatre after this film. If he wanted to do a horror film do a horror film don’t mash genres because then it isn’t what it is supposed to be. Only make it what you want us to see it as when you first start marketing it. If you wanted people to know this was a Religious film you should of done that from the start and market the film that way and not wait until they see it to do that. Daron you’re a fantastic director but you really let me down with this one.

The Cinematography : The camerawork in this film is terrible! The angles used in this film are wide 360 shots mostly around Jenifer Lawrence and it gets very boring and just bland. The way the camera moves with the actors was very messy and just had a bad look to it that didn’t help whatsoever.
