Movie Review : American Made
American Made
This film is so shocking it's insane that it's all true. Tom Cruise delivers his best work in years and he is the best part of the film. This film is so stylish and so fast paced that you can't help but love it's fantastic charm. It's very much like the wolf of Wall Street you see a man go from good morals to living the high life and then the downfall which this film dose greatly at. It has a intriguing premise that is shown to us my only problem is that they didn't dig deep enough. Films like the social network or the wolf of Wall Street are great examples of true story films that go through every detail so you see what happened and it makes the film much more interesting by knowing everything instead of skimming over material that could of been fleshed out longer and really benefited from it. This film is a great film don't get me wrong but it has such a interesting story at its core and it scratches the surface of this unbelievable story but never goes deep enough to show more of what went on. I was so interested in this story I wanted to find out more and I wish they had sadly they didn't.
But that doesn't make the film bad for doing that it's a flaw yes for sure it is. But at the same time like I said Cruise gives tremulous work here and really takes you on a ride and delivers such a charming and interesting character you can't take your eyes off of him. This film is a solid film it's incredibly enjoyable it has a terrific and shocking true story, great performances and just an all around entertaining true crime drama that is definitely worth checking out.
This film tells the story of a man named Barry Seal who is a pilot but when he's offered to work for the CIA to smuggle small materials he soon starts getting deeper and more dealing with more shader people but he can't help but love the rush. But that rush and adrenaline he craves from crime could just get him killed
Rated R : language throughout and some sexual nudity
Tom Cruise : Cruise is back and gives his best work in years! Tom is one of the best actors period giving great performances in his career but all the work I love of his were in the 90's from Jerry Maguire and a few good men to Born on the forth of July. But we haven't seen Tom tackle a dramatic genre film in a long time and damn he still has it. Tom plays this man who's moral compass is straight but easily goes sideways and deals in shady business and the way Tom was able to portray this man onscreen was fantastic. From the moment your introduced to him in the first scene you are drawn in and can't take your eyes off him. He could of easily of played this man as a bad guy but he doesn't he shows all his layers in this film. Tom is charming as hell in this their are moments where dialogue rolls of his tongue and he delivers it in such glamour and great fashion you can't help but smile. He's having so much fun with this role and doesn't just showcase his charm he shows a lot more then just that. In the film Tom explores every ounce of who this man was. You see how loyal he was to his family and how he got the pure rush from business and Tom shows it so well onscreen giving terrific range emotionally and it's amazing to watch. In scenes he can be so sly and smooth and the next be so panicked and scared he isn't sure what to do and the switch he can make on emotions within scenes is amazing. He truly becomes this character and gives such great work here. Tom truly is spectacular in this film and is the soul reason this film is so entertaining is due to his great work here. I have missed these kind of performances from Cruise and hope he can do more because he's so good at serious material.
Doug Liman : Doug gives terrific direction here! Doug has done great work in my opinion his best work is still Edge Of Tomorrow but this film comes as a close second. In this film he brings such a colourful style to the film that is so captivating you can't help but be drawn in to what he's showcasing onscreen. Doug has crafted a great true crime drama film without it feeling dull or boring. He takes this shocking true story and presets it onscreen without glamorizing or demonizing the story he looks at it both ways and doesn't sugar coat anything he shows it for as it is. Getting a truly great performance from Cruise as well as fantastic work from the supporting cast as well. Doug brings such great comedy without it feeling to much but also leave enough room to have great dramatic moments as well. Overall Doug has once again dominated the screen with another well crafted film.
The Lighting : The lighting in this film is amazing! The colour pallet is exactly what they used in 1970's crime films and the use of it here is brilliant. It really makes the screen look and feel so vibrant and it makes for a truly colourful crisp picture. While also having this old school look to the frame that just works. It flows with the story perfectly and is just the perfect fit for the movie. Overall terrific work here.
The Cinematography : The camerawork in this film is terrific! The great scope of wide shots were so well captured through the lens. In this film it has great uses of wide and long overhead shots that truly capture the feel and style of the film so well. It has this flavour to it that I haven't seen in a long time where the frame would freeze for narration that was greatly used and could of easily of fallen apart but didn't. Overall the camerawork was great and just got you in the middle of this story and did such a great job at doing so.
