Movie Review : American Assassin

American Assassin
This film is a adrenaline pumping action thrill ride! This film a lot of people are giving harsh words about the film which I don't understand. Sure the film has flaws but this movie is a fun action popcorn flick you can enjoy filled with great action sequences and terrific performances from Dylan O' Brian and the always amazing Michael Keaton. Their performances truly fuel this film both characters pull you in and get you invested in their backstory epically O' Brian's in a great set up and the first half of the film is non stop great fun but I will be honest the second half dose slow down quiet a bit it's still entertaining but kind of looses the momentum a bit.

The only other issue I would have is that the villain in the film is very poorly fleshed out sure you find out about his motive but like they say a good hero is only as good as  the Villian. You can tell the actor portraying the villain was trying I think he just was written really cheesy dialogue and it's unfortunate because I would of loved to been more drawn into his character which sadly I wasn't.

Since we have had so many spy/ revenge films within the past few years the taken trilogy starting the trend really and then earlier this year with kidnap, Kingsman 2, Atomic Blonde and sleepless which all came out this year. It's easy to be getting tired of the old stick the hero is hellbent on revenge but this film dose it in a way that's well told and exacted without it feeling cheesy but getting you invested in why he is doing what he's doing. This film sets its self apart from your run of the mill revenge films that have come out this year by giving great action, great performances and a fun time overall American Assassin is a fun popcorn film I recommend seeing.

When a mans girlfriend gets shot when he's on vacation from a terrorist organization he makes it his mission to get back at them and bring them all down.

Rated R : language, brief nudity, bloody violence

Dylan O' Brien : Dylan Gives terrific work here in this film! Dylan as we all know is known for Teen wolf and the Maze Runner. He really is branching out to show people he can do more then just teen popcorn flick but also tackle different roles from genres he hasn't done before and he dose so here. Dylan plays a character named Mitch who is set on revenge after his girlfriend got killed and the way Dylan plays it is outstanding. After his characters girlfriend is killed he commits everything to avenging her and you can see the rage and loss in his eyes it's all their and it's great to watch. What's great about his work here is we get to see him go quiet dark which we haven't seen him tackle that emotionally before onscreen. He makes it look effortless. Their is a scene where he is attaching someone in the bathtub and the sheer rage and anger in his voice and actions were so raw and real it really impressed me how Dylan can switch from being so calm and collected to compete attack mode and make it look so believable. He really gives a great performance here full of great emotional depth and great line delivery. He got me invested in his character and his characters motives you can only do that if the actor is presenting a great performance onscreen that comes across as real and entertaining which he dose so greatly. Overall Dylan delivers a career turning performance showing people he can excel in other genres besides the teen genre and he dose so here in great fashion.

Michael Keaton : Keaton delivers a solid supporting performance in this film. Keaton is one of the best and one of my favourite actors and he delivers once again another terrific performance which is shown greatly here. Keaton plays a ex military seal who trains assassins and takes them under his wing in this case that's Dylan O' Briens character. He brings this character to life onscreen with his great charm and great personality. He always commits to every role he dose and that's what I love about him. Because in this film he is so damn entertaining you can't keep your eyes off him. He brings this gritty, intimidating persona to the screen that he made work so brilliantly In his performance. Their are many scenes where he can be so quiet and calm then gradually start turning up the emotion getting louder and louder and it's so effective he keeps you entertained with what he's bringing to this role. Theirs a scene a torture scene in the film and he just goes off the walls nuts the kind of crazy Keaton I haven't seen in so long and damn it was so entertaining to see him channel that was great fun to watch. He's so menacing he is able to strike such fear and Intimidation into each character he comes across and you can see his striking eyes pop and his voice just crackle in great line delivery it's fantastic. Overall Keaton delivers another great performance here showing that no matter what Keaton dose he is the best part of the film.

Michael Cuesta : Cuesta has crafted a terrific action film here. The directors previous work I had heard of but haven't seen but would consider checking out after seeing what he did greatly with this film here. What I liked with what he brought to this film was the great choreographed action scenes that moved so smoothly like a dance and it flowed so perfectly. As well he has like I said great action but doesn't give the action unless theirs reasoning for it which I like. He doesn't give some big over the top action scene unless theirs a reason for doing that which in some action films they don't always do so it was nice to see that here. Also I loved how he got such solid performances from his cast and at the same time kept you intrigued with the story at hand. It dose get confusing at times but he keeps your interest from the great performances at hand and terrific action as well. I would love to see Cuesta do more action driven films because he has a talent for it and would love to see more. Overall He delivers a great action film without it falling into the genre of tour typical action film but instead standing out as a solid action/ revenge film which hasn't been done properly in quiet a long time.

The Score : The music composed for this film was fantastic! The music reminds me of the Bourne films and the quick and intense sounds which blends perfectly for this film. It never gets to loud or to much but it works into the story greatly getting your adrenaline pumping but also never knowing what to expect. It was able to help express the scene and also play as a great character for the action sequences to make it more intense with the great composed music at hand. Overall great composed music.
