Movie Review : The Glass Castle

The Glass Castle
This film is a terrific drama that shouldn't be missed! This film is an adaptation to the book of the same name. The film is about a family struggling to get by and it's heartbreaking to witness. The performances packed In the film are incredible from a truly spectacular performance from the always talented Woody Harrelson he is remarkable in the film giving one of his best performances of his career. As well as the young actress who plays young Jeanette in the film she really impressed me with her terrific work also. Overall the Glass castle is a fantastic film with great heart and great performances everyone should go see.

This film is about a family who is always moving house to house and the parents try to distract the kids with great imagination so they don't realize what living conditions their truly in

Rated R : subject matter, language

Woody Harrelson : Woody packs a hard hitting performance that will leave you in tears! Woody is one of my favourite actors and he has had quite the year already with his work in the latest Planet of the Apes movie to Wilson and then has an upcoming film later this year he's been quiet busy. This film I do have to say though I think is one of his best performances of his career. I still think his best work to date was on True Detective but this performance comes quiet close. In the film he plays a father full of hope and aspirations to give his family and kids a childhood full of fun and wonder. That he dose but he dose it to make them happy but also distract them from what conditions their living in. He plays it so optimistic you can't help but love his character and he is doing in the film. At the same time and this is what I love he switches it up a few times to show the addiction he character carries to Alcohol throughout the film and he doesn't glamorize it you seem him at some real low points in this film and it's hard to watch at times to see what he's going through but it's very powerful what he is delivering onscreen you can't help but be in awe of what he's showcasing so brilliantly onscreen. Their are many scenes that he truly is spectacular in he's great in the entire film but their are some scenes he just broke my heart in and some he left me grinning. I love that and that's also how effective he is in this film and in every film he dose really in the film he gosh through such a deep character arc and emotional journey you get to see so many layers of this father who's trying to do the Best he can for his family and it shows. It feels so real and raw that Woody leaves you speechless really. When he's talking to his daughter and he's in tears because he hates how he has let them down you can see and feel the weight on Harrelson's shoulders and the sheer disappointment on his face and the crack in his voice from the tears and it's so genuine and incredible it truly is a special piece of acting he is delivering here. He grabbed my attention and I couldn't take my eyes off of him he truly is magnificent in this film and gives a powerhouse performance that is beyond award worthy he deserves all the award attention towards this performance. Overall Woody delivers a emotional, heartbreaking true performance that is one of the most powerful performances I've seen all year and one of the best performances I've seen from him period.

Ella Anderson : Ella gives a truly magnificent performance that will move you! Ella Anderson's only previous work I had seen prior to this film of hers was the Boss the Comedy film that came out a few years back. But I never expected such a young actress at the age of 12 to choose such a heavy film and almost steal the film with her tremendous performance. Ella Anderson plays one of the daughters when she is younger and she try's to look at her situation as positive as she can but she also faces the truth that it's not all smooth sailing with her family. Her performance was so real and captivating she had me in tears with her range emotionally that she brought to the film. Their are scenes between her and Woody that are very serious and full of great emotion and theirs one in particular that she just stole the scene with. It was a scene where she asks her dad if he can stop drinking and the sheer look in her eyes and Tremble in her voice was incredible for such a young actress to be able to channel and deliver such a emotional piece of acting at that age amazes me. She truly has a gift and I will tell you now she will go far in the future as an actor and I can't wait to see what he will do next. She is so ahead of her years for her age to be able to deliver such an emotionally layered performance like this. Their are parts where she's just having fun and being in the moment with her family and the next she's breaking down in tears because it's to hard. And their isn't a moment where it doesn't feel genuine it one hundred percent dose and that's what makes it great she delivers such great work that doesn't even feel like acting and that's what great acting is made of and she shows that so brilliantly here. Her chemistry as well with her co stars was fantastic I totally bought them as a family they relay gelled. I hope Ella gets award attention for her work in this I really do she's so deserving of it. Overall Ella Anderson gives a remarkable performance in this film that is truly something I haven't seen from a young child actor in years.

Destin Daniel Cretton :Destin has crafted a truly entertaining book to screen adaption. Destin took the true story of the book that was written and flew the pages to the screen in remarkable fashion. In this film he tells the story of a family living in such bad conditions they keep moving and try to distract their kids from how serious it is. Now he didn't sugar coat any aspect of what happened no he showed it for how it was and I respect him for that. He shows how sad, heartbreaking and dark or can be not just being in poverty but alcoholism as well he doesn't shy away from the serious topics at hand. He also was able to assemble a great cast of actors from Naomi Watts to Woody Harrelson to Brie Larson everyone gives great work here also. I loved how he bounces back from the past to present in the film and that tactic could get irritating if done wrong but he made it work and it was so effective as well. I loved how he stayed true to the book but also was able to give a great film too if you haven't read the book as well. Overall Destin was able to execute and deliver a true look at poverty and get great performances from his actors what a tremendous job.

The Lighting : The tones of colour in the film were so explosive! In the film it takes place in the past and they lighting really helps contribute to that fact with making it have this rich texture to it. But then also be able to be very dull and grey when it has to be more emotional for the hard hitting scenes and it flowed perfectly I loved the use of colours here terrific work.

The Score : The melody in the film was beautifully done. The music in the film was fantastic the soft sounds were gorgeous. The film has this soft low key sound with a lot of use of the piano you can notice and wow it's amazing. It was able to express the scene at hand and also work as great sounds for just music in the background to help build up the scene it was greatly done great composed music here.
