Movie Review : Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2049
This film is a freaking masterpiece! Blade Runner 2049 showcases everything that I love about cinema. From the stunning visuals and the jaw dropping Cinematography to the strong performances from Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. This film is one of the best of the year!

Blade Runner 2049 what stood out to me and what is impressed me the most was the visual aspect this film is visually one of the most beautiful films I've seen in a long time and also probably all year. The gorgeous imagery done by the master Roger Deakens is truly something magnificent to witness with the eyes. As well as the great production and costume design this film pulls you into this world and fully immerses you in for the ride.

As well as the great spectacle of the film the performances shown here is nothing short of incredible. Harrison Ford delivers one of his most emotional and raw pieces of work in years that is truly moving and Ryan also holds his own as the lead giving a powerful performance as the lead. This film is just brilliant Denis Villeneuve has crafted a beautiful film that is one of the best sequels of all time but the great thing he also made the film so you don't have to see the first in order to enjoy this film. Denis has truly outdone himself giving us a truly spectacular film reminding us why we fell in love with film. Blade Runner 2049 is a triumph on every degree.

A Blade Runner named officer K is assigned to hunt down replicants and when he gets assigned a case that involves the past, the future and what it means to be human

Rated R : violence, some sexual nudity and language

Ryan Gosling : Gosling gives another terrific performance once again showcasing fantastic work in this film. Ryan plays officer K without getting into spoilers I'll say his character is one who has very little dialogue but says so much with his eyes. We've seen Ryan do that before in performances such as Drive his performance is very reminiscent of that. He dose it so well though and in this film he really pushes himself and I'll tell you how. In the film he has very dialogue and as the audience have to invest into his character and we do and to be able to do that when your character has little words to say but still can be expressive in body language is impressive. At the same time Ryan has this mysterious feel to his character that is truly striking we find out very very little about his background in the film which is what I love so not to much is revealed and he leaves you mesmerized with his performance in this film. Their at scenes that his character goes through hell and he doesn't break you see him outburst a few times and to see how he feels he doesn't need words it's all in his eyes and face and you can tell. He grabs your attention from the beginning of the film until the end showcasing great emotion and talent in the film. As well the chemistry with Gosling and Ford is absolute gold Their onscreen chemistry is electric you totally buy them as a duo and they made it look so real when they shared the screen together. Overall Ryan Gosling delivers an incredible lead performance holding his own in this film showcasing a Truly fantastic performance.

Harrison Ford : Harrison gives his best work in years in this film! Ford is one of my favourite actors and has given great performances over the course of his career but recently Their hasn't been one that really stood out until this film. I was worried he was returning to the franchise of this to be killed off like he did in force awakens. Now I want to say his performance in this is not like his work in Star Wars 7. Sure he's revisiting an old character but his role in this isn't as big as it was in Star Wars and his performance is not the same either and I mean that in the best way. I love his work in force awakens but damn his work here totally blows that out of the water. As we know he plays Deckard but this time a more worn and tired version that's seen some shit and is just tired. The way Harrison shows all of that onscreen was incredible and very moving to watch. He doesn't come in until halfway in the film but when he dose he dominates the screen with his terrific onscreen presence and he steals each frame he's in. Theirs a really emotional moment in the film Ford has in this film that had me breathless the way it played out and just what he brought to it. He has little lines in that moment but the sheer raw emotion shown on his face you can see it. When he's been spoken to you can see words hit him like a wave and the heartbreak in his eyes is so real it's so moving to witness onscreen. To the point where he breaks into tears and it shows people Harrison still has it he can still deliver scene stealing performances as he's proved here greatly. Harrison was able to deliver such a great layer of emotions we got to see every side to him even sides we haven't seen him channel in a very long time emotionally and it was so powerful. He really owns this role when he speaks his dialogue he says it with meaning making it really impact you and it feels so genuine. Overall Ford delivers one of his best performances to date and gives one of his most committed and moving performance period.

Denis Villeneuve : Denis has knocked it out of the park once again! In today's film industry we haven't had a Scorsese or Spielberg for this generation I can say Denis is it because he has never missed and he crafts great work after another. From Sicario to prisoners to this Denis keeps raising the bar and it's great to know a visionary him like is still around making great quality films. And this is easily his best film yet! The sheer pressure that was over this film was huge. He had to deliver a film for the fans and it be a loyal sequel as well as giving a original story without it being over complicated and this film could of easily very easily of fallen apart in the wrong hands but Denis juggled all of that and executed perfectly. Not only did he deliver he surpassed our expectations giving one of the best film sequels of all time with incredible imagery, amazing sets that we're all practical and award worthy performances from the cast. He gave us a film where if you haven't seen the first film you don't need to in order to enjoy this film and I love that it can be a standalone film but it's also a sequel so it works both ways. Denis is a freaking genius giving such a beautiful landscape and expanding this incredible universe and leaving us without words. I think this film will become a study for what great film is for years to come and it's all thanks to Denis and his amazing vision for this film. His style for the film matched perfectly giving us the perfect blend of emotion and imagery it's just a perfect film and Denis deserves all the praise for his excellence work on this film. Overall Denis gives one of the best directed films in years and of the year crafting a true masterpiece due to his great vision beyond amazing.

The Lighting : The colours in this film is mesmerizing! The colour pallet in this film is beautiful just gorgeous! The film has the perfect mix of grey and black with a whole other lot of layers. The film had the street scenes soaked in darkness then brightened it it with bright colours to make the frame really stand out and pop and damm did it work. The colours are incredible truly it's so dazzling to look at it captures the tone and the feel and style perfectly. Overall what truly excellent Lighting.

The Cinematography: This is pure genius work here! Deakens is a cinematographer who has shot some of my favourite films such as Skyfall, no country for old men and many more. He shoots films in such a different and interesting scope he stands out unlike any other cinematographer and in my opinion is my favourite. He's truly outdone himself and has raised the bar incredibly for himself. As I think No Country for old men is in my opinion his best shot film this is probably my new favourite just for how he captures the scene in this magnificent film. In the film he uses so many different angles and some which I have never seen before some were wide shots but shot in a way that fills the frame and is so beautiful to look at. He has great uses of side shots and POV as well and damn it's pure art at its highest degree. Deakens not only did a fantastic job capturing the film he was so expressive through his work in this film it's beautiful just stunning and it fit the feel and emotion and style of the film so so perfectly. I loved this camerawork probably my favourite of the year and in years to be honest. If he dose not get the oscar for his work on this I will not be clocking into the oscars anymore because he's so underrated he's been nominated 13 times and this is his year to win he deserves it. Overall Masterful camerawork that is stunning to the eyes.

The Score : Hans Zimmer has crafted a haunting and expressive score once again! Hans Zimmer is a great composer and he's known for doing loud sounds and he couldn't of fit this film any more perfect with his style then here. He was able to make the score sound reminiscent of the original film which was great but he didn't lean on the first film as a crutch to copy but used it in small doses. And used the rest of the film to create his own take which was so well composed and beautiful and just incredible. It's melodies are so loud and grandiose it's spectacular but also can really use soft harmonies for the mellow and more quiet scenes. It is a perfect score and once again another brilliant piece of music by Zimmerman
