Movie Review : The Meyerowitz Stories
The Meyerowitz Stories
This film is a entertaining and incredibly well acted drama! This film was praised earlier in the year for the fantastic performances especially Adam Sandler's work in the film and after seeing the film I can understand why. Sandler gives his best work of his career in this film and he really showcases some parts of himself we haven't seen from him ever and it's amazing to witness. As well the supporting cast is equally as entertaining and strong with other great performances from Ben Stiller and Dustin Hoffman this is a film that has been a big film with awards most recently but not a lot of people have heard of it. I hope more people get a chance to see this film because it is worth checking out the pacing can be a little slow at times but besides that this is totally worth checking out. This film is well acted, well directed and an all around great film everyone should see.
This film tells the story of a dysfunctional family who comes together when their father plans on putting his art work on display but when an unexpected incident occurs with his health the family comes together
Rated R : language throughout, nudity
Adam Sandler : Yes Finally Sandler has returned to his roots! Sandler is extraordinary in this film giving his best work to date. He channeled his dramatic side in another film not to long ago which sadly got overlooked which was a role in Men Woman and Children but that role doesn't even come close to how remarkable he is in this film. Sandler has always been the comedic guy but when he dose drama which is rare but dose happen every now and then he dominates the screen with his dramatic muscles and he makes it look effortless here. In the film he plays a son who's father never really spent time with him and lived under the shadow of his other sister and brother so his career never took off and the way Adam is able to play that character is sensational. From the moment he comes onscreen you can tell this isn't going to be your run of the mill Sandler this is something special something he hasn't done before and damn dose he shine. Their are such great moments in this film for him great moments of comedy but also tender moments of scene filled emotion that lights up the screen in ways I haven't seen him do before. The raw emotion presented from him in this film is great he has scenes where he gets choked up and his eyes are full of just sadness or heartache and you can see it witnessing Sandler give this kind of performance is so special. He fully immerses himself in the character bringing this broken character off the page and to life onscreen giving his character such depth and emotion crafting a truly outstanding performance that I defiantly hope gets award attention because he deserved it. Adam brings to the screen a truly magnificent performance that is on the field of Oscar caliber work and it is a performance that deserves to be recognized all in all a truly mesmerizing performance from Sandler.
Ben Stiller : Stiller gives a remarkably moving supporting performance in this film! Ben has recently been doing a lot of dramas about men in their mid life crisis with Brads Status and Walter Mitty not saying those performances aren't great but I saying it is great that he's really turning the tables and giving us more dramatic work recently and showing that he can do more then just comedy but showcase sides we haven't seen before and that's what he dose here in fantastic fashion. In this film he plays the successful hot shot son who comes to his home town for his dad and starts to warm up to his family and the way Ben shows that onscreen is unlike anything I've seen him do before. At first I thought oh he's playing the same role the guy who's to busy for his family and I was so wrong and I'm so happy I was because his work in the film is not like anything he's done prior to this film. In the film he shows great layers of anger and sadness and joy and so much other emotions he peels back layer after layer of emotion. Their are some truly terrific scenes where he shines but their is one that stands above the rest without giving to much away I'll say he cries and breaks down into tears and it was moving and the most emotionally open and raw I've ever seen him. He really is great in the film their are moments where he is talking to Sandler and is yelling and it feels genuine when an actor can bring such emotion to a performance that it no longer feels acted but real that's when you are witnessing w truly great piece of work which I can say he dose very very well in this film. He goes places we haven't seen him channel before and I loved every moment of it. Not only is this a terrific performance but I think it is one of his best performances to date if not his best period. Overall Stiller delivers a performance of award caliber that shouldn't be overlooked.
Noah Baumbach : Naoh has crafted a terrific tale about family! Baumbach's previous work prior to the viewing this film I am unfamiliar with except his writing work I had been familiar with but not from a director standpoint. Here he has crafted a exceptional film with fantastic performances and a very intriguing story to be told. He not only directed the film but wrote and produced it as well which is also well done too. He has a style I see that I haven't seen in many directors in a while which is to tell three stories and then intertwine them using cutaway cards in between which was very effective and worked incredibly well. He was able to get career best work from Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler as well as great supporting work from the rest of the cast too. He never let the film stay on a sad note it never got too sappy or sad he would mix it with comedy and it has the perfect balance of both drama and comedy without too much of either and it's perfect. He gets great emotion but also great laughs too he has written as well as directed a fantastic picture and he did a fine job I loved his direction.
The Lighting : the lighting in the film I enjoyed quiet a bit. Their are moments in the film where the colours just explode onscreen in bright yellow and has this deep gold feel to it that just works with the feels and tone of the picture. It has this rich feel to it that's just compelling that I loved it was greatly used great job guys.
