Movie Review : Happy Death Day
Happy Death Day
This film is so much fun! When I saw the marketing towards this film when the trailer for this film I was like ok it's going to be another repeat same day films like we've seen a bunch of times. This style of filmmaking has been done so much now it's becoming rather dull by this point but this film surprised me greatly. We've seen films of this style before like Live die repeat, before I fall and Groundhog Day which really started this genre and gets referenced in this film once which I love it felt so meta. Besides the style what I thought this film brought to the audience that was different wasn't the violence or style but rather the characters and the story at hand.
At first the film felt very bland and that I've seen this Before but it's all build up and by the climax of the film the film really pushes itself and has some serious weight to it which I loved. You care about the characters they were very well structured as well as the performances are well acted as well. It's nice to see that the cast and characters are good because so many horror films have shallow recyclable and forgettable characters nowadays it's sad to see we don't get good horror characters like we use to but in this film they try their hardest and it pays off.
The Scares felt like we've seen this in every horror film the attacker comes from a POV angle or he comes from behind but they did that in a way where it was like a joke where they were playing in on it which was fun. But at the same time also was able to raise tension and get genuine scares at moments in the film that didn't feel forced or to obvious. I was really surprised with this film and I'm glad I am I thought it wasn't going to be as good as I thought and it exceeded my expectations it's well acted, a well rounded story full with scares and a fun film to enjoy Happy Death Day is a film I totally will recommend people to go see.
This film revolves around a girl who's birthday it is and she is a mean, and rude person who shows little kindness towards but when she comes across someone on the way to a party she wakes in the same day getting killed by this killer and she is going to repeat it until she finds out who this person is and to live to the next day
Rated PG - 13 : or violence/terror, crude sexual content, language, some drug material and partial nudity
Jessica Rothe : Jessica gives a rich performance in this great horror mystery film! Jessica Rothe apparently was in La La Land and I don't remember her but I will say she's impressed me greatly with her acting chops in this film. In the movie she plays a character who in the beginning is very mean and just a terribly not nice person and at first I was annoyed with her performance because I thought that was what she was going to be doing for the whole film. But she takes a turn and really shows a character ark and journey in the film and it's great to witness unfold in front of you. She breaks that mean persona and showcases great emotion and sheer panic and terror on her face and it's so fantastic to see her tap into so many emotions and just explore the character so much so that we get to see so many layers and see her character develop within the film. She impressed me how quick she can play a mean and just horrible person then switch it within seconds and be sweet with a grin and then the next show signs of true heartwarming emotion. That emotional roller coaster she goes on must of not been easy but she pulls it off with great believability in every scene. As well as the great emotion and character ark she got me invested in her character and too really care about her and she pulls you in and just delivers a truly gripping performance that will surprise a lot of people. Overall Jessica impressed me greatly with a terrific breakout performance.
Christopher Landon : Christopher Landon gives his best directed work yet with this film! Christopher has done one film I had seen prior to this film which was the horror comedy Scouts guide to surviving the zombie apocalypse. Which was a fun film so knowing that going into this I was open minded and I was so impressed with what he dose here. He was able to take the living same day genre and flip it on its head by giving it the horror treatment and not only that but being able to keep it fresh and bring something new and interesting to the table to keep the audience intrigued. He made you think you knew the outcome to the film but towards the end he throws a curveball on you that you don't see coming which I love he tricks the audience and gives a terrific shock which works greatly. As well he balanced the horror and comedy aspect well so it was never to much of either one it was the right amount so it never was constant but just enough. As well as surrounding the film with characters you care about and really invest in. He didn't give a run of the mill horror film he brought something new that was such a great breath of fresh air and delivers a fun film with great horror great performances and comedy as well. At the same time giving a great moral message to walk away with. Overall Christopher has outdone himself and really crafted a great film that is so enjoyable due mostly to the great direction great work Christopher.
