Movie Review : Flatliners
This film fell short and had some much potential! This film is a remake off of the 90's film of the same name and this film had the great potential to be a great remake to update this film and it just was a sheer let down. First off I want to say I didn't completely hate the film the first half of it was very interesting and it got my attention but then halfway through the film it becomes a jump scare film why? The plot was very solid and was fascinating but for some weird reason they veered the story off its main focus and made this really cheesy horror film by the end of it completely abandoning its original premies.
The performances for the most part were passable they weren't terrible but the only actor who really tried with what he was given onscreen was Diego Luna who really tried to hold this film together from falling apart. Even though he was good it couldn't help this film from just falling apart and it did. What issues I had besides the abandonment of the premise was the pacing the film felt very slow and to be quiet honest it was boring by the end of the film. The jump scares were so un effective that their predictable. Their was no sense of tension or real danger in the film giving us nothing to grasp onto it just felt like an overlong film that first was interesting then quickly became this boring jump scare film.
They could of easily of trimmed twenty minutes worth of film out it was just scene filler and not needed side plots whatsoever. The film just was bland boring this film had great potential but decided to switch the plot up halfway thinking it would pay off when it didn't we wanted to see the film we got within the first 30 minutes not this horror version of ER. Flatliners isn't one of the worst of the year but just simply disappointing.
The plot revolves around these medical students who try Flatlining to see what the afterlife is like or if their is one but they soon learn their is consequences from their actions
Rated PG - 13 : for violence and terror, sexual content, language, thematic material, and some drug references
Diego Luna : Luna gives the best performance out of anyone in this film! Diego as many people know him now is from the Star Wars franchise but I had been unfamiliar with any work of his prior to seeing him in this. All I knew was he's been in talks for the Scarface remake. After seeing him in this I'll definitely be keeping an eye on him because he really gave a good performance in a mediocre film. For starters I'll like to give Diego props for actually giving a good performance and trying instead of giving a dull performance and I admire that. His character is a person who at first talks very little and in ways is mysterious but he's very knowledgable we know that but not much that is what made his character so intriguing to me. He plays it in a way where it's such a quiet performance but then can show such great depth and emotion to him their are some really great moments Diego has in this film. The script is so poorly written but he did his best with what he was given and it shows here he brings great emotion and at times humour to the role that actually works with his character. Diego for me was the best part of the film because he gave a good performance showcased emotion and really got you invested in his character that's why he's such a standout in the film and the only standout in the film. Overall Diego gave a great performance In a bad film.
Niels Arden Oplev : This director I'm sorry cannot direct medical dramas whatsoever! The only knowledge I had with him prior to this film was his work on Mr Robot which I liked quiet a bit but that's about it. What he did here is terrible I'm not going to sugarcoat it his direction on this film was a train wreck and I'll tell you why. In the film he was going to explore the theory of afterlife and he dose for the first thirty minutes which I enjoyed but why did he have to veer it into a horror that wasn't needed at all. The film could of easily of stood as a solid film about the afterlife and made it a medical drama but no he has to throw in jump scares and the freaking creepy child sounds used in every damn horror film. He made me upset for one abandoning a very interesting plot for a horror style which wasn't need but he also had terrible sense of pacing. All the side plots he gave us to try and are about these characters which we know little of and he wants us to invest in their backstory but can't even handle the plot at hand first so he throws in scene fillers to just distract us from this mess. It was just a mess of a film which had no tension whatsoever and was hilarious for all the wrong reasons. Niels I bet your a good director but damn you really did a disappointing job you can do so much better then this.
The Lighting : The colours were so badly brought into the scene! The film's tone was supposed to be a medical drama but since it became a horror the colours were all over the place. It was bright in some scenes and then Grey the next and then had this long use of blue which was so irritating to watch. The colours didn't match the moments and were placed in all the wrong scenes giving off the wrong emotional delivery they were trying to give. The lighting was just terrible.
