Movie Review : The Show

The Show
This movie is one of the most original, well acted and emotionally moving pieces of film I've seen all year! This film stars a incredible cast of actors from Josh Duhamel, Giancarlo Esposito and Sarah Wayne Callies all of who give tremendous performances in the film. The plot of the film is so original and disturbing it's unlike anything I've seen before. It's about a television show that has people commit suicide on  tv show the premise sounds sick and degrading but trust me it dose not glamorize suicide for a moment. The genius behind this film who wrote directed and starred in the film Giancarlo Esposito shows how so many people are scared and sometimes feels their is no way out that they take their life so they go on the show and do it.

It's very hard to watch at times but it is so important to see this film due to the reason it's showing how people are in pain and they feel like theirs no other option and to help them. That's why it is so sad that this film isn't being marketed more or people knowing more about this film because it is a film worth watching for the message and for the great performances as well.

The film grabs your attention and will have you stuck to the screen to what you are witnessing as well as being incredibly moved emotionally. The film struck me so much with the the film that it brought me to tears and I will tell you it's an incredible piece of film that must be seen. Everyone involved gives their best work from the acting to the writing to the direction this film will have you talking about it long after it's over.

The story revolves around a tv host when something tragically goes wrong on a show the tv studio pitches the idea if people committed suicide on television would people watch as the show gets darker and darker people question the host and his sense of morals of where is the line that can't be crossed.

Rated R : for strong language, disturbing images and bloody images

Josh Duhamel : Josh gives a career best performance in this film! Josh is a character actor who has appeared in films such as the transformers franchise, safe haven and when in Rome just to name a few. Now all films I've seen him in and he's great in all of them. But I haven't to this point seen him tackle drama before and he dose so here and it's incredible to witness. His performance is unlike anything we have seen him do before. He plays a television host and at first glance when you see him he really believe in changing the world for the good and as the film goes on we see his moral compass get broken and he totally switches up who he was in the begin in compared to he his by the end of the film. The transformation we witness him go through is fantastic not only from a character study point of view but for his emotional range and how he really showcases a great layer of emotions. He can be so charming and nice in some scenes and then the next be just so cold and evil and the way he is able to do it is amazing. Their is a scene when he runs into a producer and very few words are exchanged and the scene was chilling to witness due to his ability to show so much just from his facial expressions without saying little to nothing but it's powerful and that also shows how well he can act. Josh gives his absolute best work in this film when he delivers his dialogue he means it their is a sense of realism behind his eyes and behind the voice it's incredible. Overall Josh gives his performance ever captured on film in this movie.

Giancarlo Esposito : Giancarlo is a revelation in this film! As we know him best from is as Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and some small parts outside the tv show. But for me I haven't seen him really play a role that showcases deep rooted emotions with a drama before. After seeing this film I want to see Giancarlo tackle more roles in the drama category because he is a phenomenal actor and this film shows you and wow he in my opinion gave the best performance of the film. Not because he's a big star no it's because we spend most of the film with him we see his characters work life and what his home life is too. So we become so invested and attached to his character because we film like we know him from spending the whole film with him really. Now how Esposito captures this character is heartbreaking and damn he's good in this role. In the film he plays a guy struggling to pay his bills and will work as many jobs as possible to keep a roof over his kids and wife's head. The sheer raw emotion captured from him is so real and heartbreaking it'll bring you to tears. In every frame he is giving his absolute all.

I have never seen Giancarlo be so emotionally raw onscreen like this before and that's what makes it so captivating and amazing he gives us something we have never seen him channel before. His layers of emotions shown were fantastic when he is begging for a job the look in his eyes and the sound in his voice is so real you can't help but feel for him. Their is no sense of false emotion in his performance. Their are scenes where he isn't even talking but just tears down his face and since we the audience have followed him around in the film knowing his situation. Words don't have to be said to understand what he feels and to see his pain it's all in the eyes and it's incredible that he can give so much by not giving one word of dialogue in some scenes. When he spoke you beloved every word as truth it just is a tremendous piece of acting showcased brilliantly by Giancarlo in this film. Overall Giancarlo gives one of the best acted, emotionally raw and moving performances I've seen all year.

Sarah Wayne Callies : Sarah gives a truly incredible supporting performance that will have you in tears. Sarah Wayne Callies is an actor I am unfamiliar with but after witnessing her brilliant work in this film I'll definitely keep my eye out for any future projects she's in as well as checking out her past work. Why I give her such praise is because she deserves every ounce of it because her work in this is nothing short of brilliant. She plays the sister of the tv host and she has depression her role is a hard rope to walk. Why I say that is because playing someone with depression is not easy you have to be able to showcase some really raw emotions and make sure you do it justice and wow dose she ever. She plays a nurse and she isn't happy with what her brother is doing and as the film progresses he pays less and less attention to her even in her moments of pain he doesn't give her a moment to listen which makes her performance even more heartbreaking. She plays this role so well she just wants help and someone to care and the way she was able to show that in the film was so incredible but so sad at the same time. Because you really feel for her and you see her going through a tough time and you see her brother dose not care and it hurts to watch at times but it hurts because she's being so real onscreen with a role that isn't easy to do and she deserves praise for it. She shows a great range of emotions throughout the film and really is tremendous in the film theirs a scene that just made me feel for her. She's on the phone with her brother and is screaming for help and the emotion in her voice and sheer pain is so hard to hear but it's amazing and so real. I know I keep saying her emotion was great in the film but it was it didn't feel like she was reading from a script it felt genuine and was ultimately  a incredible and moving performance on her part that shouldn't go unnoticed. Whenever she's onscreen she dominates the scene overall a incredible performance from Sarah Wayne Callies.

Giancarlo Esposito : Giancarlo is a mastermind behind the lens and I hope he dose more films behind the camera because he is brilliant at it. He wrote directed and starred in the film each being fantastic on his part of the film which he participated in. From a story point of view he was gripped me with his story from start to finish. His ability to create such a compelling and original piece of film is astonishing. I always and I mean always appreciate original film and writing and he dose it here so greatly. He was able to give the shock factor from the premise but also shine a light on suicide and depression and give deep messages the audience learns and walks away with. His story is layered in great originality with its gripping tale but also did a great job at giving messages to the audience to think and discuss about now that is great writing when you can do that and keep the audience engaged in the film. From a directing standpoint he did a fantastic job at being able to get great performances from his entire cast as well as delivering a film unlike anything that hasn't been done before bringing something fresh and new to the table. He focuses on the characters and the plot juggling both and they land greatly giving great focus on the characters so we understand and connect to them but also keep interested at the story at hand. Giancarlo has written an incredible piece of film given a powerhouse performance and has told a story so incredibly well from behind the lens he is a master at the craft of direction, writing and acting and people should sit up and notice his great work in the film shown here.

The Score : The music in the film felt very soft and I enjoyed that. This is a film where you don't need loud over the top sounds to deliver a scene emotionally it went for the low key sound and it worked greatly from that. It was very mellow and soft and was able to use that to get you emotionally captured with the characters. I thought the score was well composed and well worth listening to.
