Movie Review : It Comes At Night

It Comes At Night
This film is great but definitely threw me for a loop! This film first off I would like to say is a incredibly well made film with great performances and tremendous camera work and is an enjoyable film. Now this film has been receiving great reviews from the critics and the audience not as much and I can understand why. The film I also would like to add was one of my most anticipated films of the year and did it deliver yes it did but not as I expected at all. But back to why I see people not taking a liking to the film is due to the marketing.

What I mean by that is the film made itself In the trailers to get you to think it was going to be an intense horror film and what the film shows is something completely different then what the marketed showed for this film. Which to a certain extent I can see the director doing that and wanting to give the audience a surprise of something completely different then what they bargained for but to a lot of people that's just misleading marketing. This is one of the film's either people are going to love it or hate it and for both reasons I can understand both because their is a good film in here it's jut the marketing scheme didn't give us what we thought we were going to get.

It Comes At Night also is a film that will leave you confused trust me it will because I was too and it gives you scenes of information but never picks up or answers them later. The director said he wanted to leave it to the audience and he thought it would be more scarier if those questions weren't answered. For some people they could really like that because you make up the ending for yourself and too others it can seem lazy to me I was confused but after understanding what the director was going for I liked it. The film is not fast paced or full of gore this film takes its time and is constructed in this house. So don't walk in the film thinking your going to see this explosive Horror extravaganza because that is not what the film is to me I think it as a psychological thriller. It's a great film I defiantly do recommended people see it and see what their opinion is on the film because it is worth a watch just know it's not what you expect at all. Overall It Comes At Night is a well acted and well filmed movie with a plot that once you understand after a second viewing you'll love.

The story is about this family who is hiding away from this thing and do not go outside unless their with someone because whatever is out their they don't want to come across

Rated R : violence, disturbing images and language

Joel Edgerton : Joel once again delivers an emotional and real performance! The performance given from Joel in this film is simply terrific to watch. In the film he plays a father who wants to protect his family and will do anything at all costs in order to keep them safe. He brings that across screen so well in the film showing layers after layers of such realism and emotion in his performance in the film. Their are scenes where he will be truly terrifying yelling at a stranger and just grilling him who he is because he wants to be carful and you can see the terror and intensity in his eyes it's so raw and real it's amazing to see. But at the same time he could also down play it and be incredibly subtle and give smaller more intimate moments in the film with a great sense of warmth and joy in his character. He can be so charming and all smiles but if someone or anything puts his family at risk he can switch in seconds and it's great because not only are we seeing great emotional and gripping acting from Joel but we are also getting a great range emotionally and a better understanding of where his character is coming from. Joel once again dominates the screen with great emotion and just simply a terrific performance. Overall Joel once again shows us how he is a force to be reckoned Joel delivers once again on all levels.

Trey Edwards Shults : Trey gave good direction on this film! Trey is a director who I have heard of but haven't seen any of his previous work prior to seeing this film. After viewing this film I will for sure check out his work. In the film he doesn't show you what the thing is or what they are hiding from which to me is much more scarier then if you were to see it. I thought that was well done and created a sense of tension and terror and was well executed no doubt. He also was able to get great performances from his cast and get you gripped with the story at hand. The one thing that I really loved though was his use of silent to incredibly quiet music I thought that was brilliant on his part. What I mean exactly is that in the film usually when something is going to pop out at you in a horror film the music fades and it is quiet right. What he did so greatly was he did that for the entire duration of the film so you never know when something is going to pop out or happen which kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I thought he did that incredibly well and it was very effective. His style of filmmaking is very different to other horror directors working today. Overall I thought Trey did a great job at delivering a gripping psychological thriller that was well helmed by the man behind the lens.

The Lighting : The lighting is so effective in this film! In the film the lighting is so dark and bleak that you never know when something will happen which I loved. It kept the tension built all the time never letting up. It was using uses of the colour black and grey and it worked very well with the tone and what the story was going for it fit the frame greatly overall great job guys.

The Cinematography : The camerawork in this is so fantastic! The camerawork is incredible in the film with such great transitions. The shots in this film was so well handled it didn't use multiple cuts to create that sense of danger or tension but simply had these long narrow smooth shots that were so effective and way more terrifying. The shots down the hallway especially was chilling to see and how it's captured through the lens is nothing short of brilliant. I loved the camerawork on the film wow what great work guys I loved it.

The Score : The music in the film is great! The score like I said earlier was great at being incredibly quiet to build tension and chills within the audience. Because it could of easily of been loud and knowing when something was going to occur. But it went the opposite route with being quiet and just so silent and I thought that was a brilliant choice from the composer it made it ten times more chilling and so much more effective and terrifying. Overall great composed music in the film.
