Movie Review : Detroit
Detroit
This film is incredible Bigelow dominates the screen once again with this hard hitting film Detroit. This film is directed by Kathryn Bigelow and she knocks it out if the park again with terrific performances across the bored. A real stand out in this film is Will Poulter. Detroit is a emotionally hard hitting film and was incredibly well done by Kathryn showing once again how she can dominate the screen with her ability to craft great cinema. Detroit is another one of her great films it is well acted, disturbing at times and incredibly suspenseful this is one of the best directed and best films of the year Detroit is a pure triumph.
This film is about the 1967 Detroit riots. It is around a group of people in a hotel when a Toy gun gets fired as a joke or quickly becomes a serious situation as cops come in and the line between morals is drawn
Rated R : strong violence and pervasive language
Will Poulter : Will gives a career defining performance in this film! Will has been impressing me lately and really flexing his talent as an actor to show what he can do. He's gone from being in the teen popcorn flicks of the Maze Runner films to doing more serious material with the Revenant and he's shaping himself to becoming a truly fine young actor in the film industry. In this film he really showcases his talent to a whole other degree we haven't seen before which is truly fantastic to see. In the film he plays a cop who's morals are more on the grey side of things and the way Will plays it in the film is so well done because he brings this character to life and he gets you to hate his character in the film he's terrific in this. Their are many scenes that he stands out but for me the most noticeable and best is the lineup scene where he's just yelling profanities at these people pinned to the wall the sheer anger and intimidation in his eyes and voice is so real like I really believed him it didn't feel false or acting he really brought the dialogue he speaks to life np giving it as much realism as possible. He steals the show really in every way possible from his terrific onscreen performance and you can't take your eyes off of him because he's so damn entertaining to watch. He's able to show you so many sides to this complex character and keep you interested he doesn't let up for a moment. He just was so committed to every frame giving his absolute all which is truly incredible to watch in this film. Overall Will's supporting performance in this film is extraordinary and shouldn't go unnoticed one of the best supporting performances I've seen all year.
Kathryn Bigelow : Kathryn once again captures another incredible film with her terrific direction! Bigelow is one of the best directors working today and personally one of my favourite directors. She's able to capture sheer tension so well and great performances along with great storytelling she's proven time and time again she can. With her work on the hurt locker, zero dark thirty and point break just to make a few and this film is another terrific film she's done it again. In this film she tackles the 1967 Detroit riots which isn't a easy topic to tackle or discuss and Kathryn was able to capture both sides of the story and pull you in. Her ability to create tension in scenes to keep you invested is truly remarkable not many directors can do that she can. She also is able to get career best performances from her cast in this film while also staying as true to what happened as possible. She shows it for how it is she doesn't glamorize or sugar coat it she shows it for how it went down and it's disturbing it's not easy to watch but it's not supposed to feel comfortable either she makes it as real as possible and I love that. She just did such a great job with this film giving once again a truly solid drama by the always great Bigelow showing people she's a force to be reckoned with behind the lens. Overall Kathryn has outdone herself once again with this truly marvellous film.
The Lighting : The colour pallet in this film I really liked. This film takes place in 1967 and so its in the past so the colours were very reminiscent of the past giving us colours of dark yellow and had this yellow feel to the frame that really made you feel immersed in the time we were in. It helped fit the frame and the emotion of the scene well done guys.
The Cinematography : the camerawork in this film I really enjoyed! The camera was able to explore the shots of the street and the hotel from different angles showing is from so many different outlooks and perspectives or was refreshing to see. And it also really did a great job at helping with the music to build up the tension in the scene that was also incredibly well done too. Overall great camerawork.
The Score : The music in this is terrific. The score in the film is fantastic it is very well composed. The music was great at being able to help build up the tension then execute it through sound which was so great it also was great for the more smaller moments as well. Being able to express great emotion through the music which isn't always easy to do and be able to get the right emotions across overall great music I loved it.
