Movie Review : Dunkirk

Dunkirk
This film is the best war film next to saving private Ryan as one of the greatest war films ever presented onscreen. The film for the most part of it has no dialogue it's mostly driven from the score and the cinematography to some people that can be annoying since theirs little dialogue but I thought it was such a different style and I loved it. For the reason when your in a war you don't go and say hey where you from when your in the middle of a battle it's more about the battle then the talking. So I loved how Nolan was able to bring that so incredibly well onscreen.

The film has a great cast of actors surprisingly enough Harry Styles impressed me and I would say gives a terrific first film debut and the best performance of the film. As well the scope of the film is so massive the camera work was able to capture it so beautifully onscreen mixed with the the score it was cinematic gold. Lastly Nolan was able to time the score along with the tension and camerawork perfectly that it's intertwined perfectly I picked up on that and thought it was brilliant.

I have not seen a war film like this the way it was approached probably ever it's a new direction Nolan has delved into and wow dose he pull it off. Nolan again proves again how he is a force to be reckoned with as a director this film is an incredible piece of film that should be seen by everyone and is a film people will be talking about for years to come this film is outstanding truly one of the years best.

This film is about the evacuation of soldiers from the city of Dunkirk before Germans men get to them

Rated PG - 13 : for intense war experiences, and some language

Harry Styles : Wow Harry gives an incredible acting debut in this film! As well all know Harry is known superstar all over the world for his band one direction but we have never seen him act before and after seeing him in this I would love to see him explore more work as an actor because he's brilliant in this film. Like I said earlier for the most part their is not much dialogue so when he dose have lines to deliver he chews up the scenes he's in to his full capacity. Not much is known about his character expect that he just wants to go home and will do what he has to do to get home. Their is one scene where he made the hairs on my skin come up theirs a scene where bullets come in a ship and he asks for a volunteer to go up. The sheer emotion in his voice was incredible what he did that impressed me so much was he started really calm and gradually started getting louder and more intense and when he got to that point of screaming and yelling. You can see in his eyes and his voice it's so real and genuine you can't take your eyes off of him his delivery of his lines he spoke it and brought such life to what he said and you believed him their wasn't one moment where your not invested in his character. For his first acting debut Harry has shown incredible range and given us a truly outstanding performance. Overall Harry Styles is truly great in this film and shouldn't go unnoticed.

Christopher Nolan : Nolan gives truly outstanding work behind the lens in this film. Nolan has impressed me ever since his work on Memento and has since not disappointing me once. He always raises the bar for what he can do but this I would say would be one of the best films he's ever written and directed. For the reason he changed up his style with this film and in the hands of any other director this film could of gone so wrong but Nolan brought a flare to it that worked. He uses the camera and score to showcase the story showing that dialogue isn't always needed in order to make a great and accurate war film. His ability to have little dialogue was great because he didn't use it I think because then it would of taken away the attention of the story at hand and more people would be interested in the characters rather then the events. So what he did was give little dialogue and focus on the story that deserved to be told as accurate as possible and he dose just that. He just brings a new style and new direction to his work with this film that was so refreshing and so new I loved how he changes it up. He casted great actors and all of who got their moments but never took away from the story at hand and he was able to craft great suspense and storytelling within great writing, great music and incredible camerawork. This is one of Nolan's best work as a director with this film showing how he is a force to be reckoned with and how much a visionary he is fantastic direction.

The Lighting : The lighting for the film was perfect! The lighting was bright but not to bright and it has this old feel to it that worked well with the picture. It was able to make the frame pop out and really match the tone and feel of the scene perfectly I loved their mixture of colours used in the film great work guys.

The Cinematography : One of the years best shot films! This film was captured through the cinematographer who worked with Nolan on Interstellar. Another film which camerawork I loved so to see him do this I was so excited and wow dose he do an amazing job. It's on the border of being perfect because what he did so well was capture the grand scope of the scenery and be able to showcase the terror and sheer intensity of war. Their were angles that left me breathless he gives truly genius camerawork on this film. I loved how smooth it felt it didn't feel like multiple jump cuts he would let it go on for a long take before cutting to another angle so it's one long shot I loved that. As well as his use as pan wide angles were beautifully used to showcase the environment. Overall one of best if not the best cinematography I've seen all year excellent work great job guys.

The Score : The score is brilliant just brilliant! The films score was very fast and had this static and loud sound that reminded me of Trent raznor and Atticus Ross's work. It felt like a stopwatch and the time is ticking and the ability to keep the score in lined with the camerawork was genius. They were able to capture the heart pounding intensity and horror within the score and I loved it. It is so well composed and used perfectly and placed perfectly that is is truly one of the best scored films of the year. Giving the right sound for the tone and emotion incredible just incredible amazing job guys.
