Movie Review : Atomic Blonde
This is a good film but has its good share of flaws! First I'll start off with what I liked I'd like to state walking into this film I was very excited this film was one of my most anticipated because from the trailer and the marketing it looked like a James Bond meets kill bill style kind of film which looked brilliant. Now did it live up to the hype I thought it would sort of is the word for me to describe how I feel after seeing it.
The things I liked was right off the bat is James McAvoy I thought he did a splendid job in this film. So did Charlize Theron both of them did a solid job in the film. As well the action sequences were very brutal and well choreographed I enjoyed those quiet a bit. And lastly the twist in the film is what really made me enjoy the film I didn't see it coming and it worked very well into the story giving hints you never pick up on until further into the film.
Now what I disliked with the film. The film for the first 40 minutes to me felt very boring to be honest and just didn't have any entertaining substance for me to grab onto until a action scene would pop up. That was one issue I had the second being the confusing plot line the film suffers a bit by its over complicated storyline that is very easy to get confused with if not paying attention. To be honest I think it could of been more clear if told in a better way so that was a problem I had. The next being the lack of action in the film I understand set up in a film and establishing what it is working towards sure but their was very little action and I expected to see more from what the marketing had towards this film.
It just had to much talking and very little action which disappointed me quite a bit. Lastly my biggest issue was the runtime of the film was way to long. The film is an hour and fifty five minutes which could of easily been trimmed down to an hour and thirty eight minutes. The film felt way to long and dragged out for a good bit of it giving us scenes we don't need making me impatient and just wanting it to get to the end. It would end with a good scene then go to the next which wasn't needed. Overall Atomic Blonde is a enjoyable spy film that is worth seeing but a film I wouldn't buy on DVD.
The film is about a woman named Lorraine who is a spy for the British division and is sent in Berlin in the hight of the wall coming down to retrieve a list with the names of agents that could make the Cold War go on for the next forty years.
Rated R : for sequences of strong violence, language throughout and some sexuality and nudity
Charlize Theron : Theron gives a solid performance showing how incredible she truly is no matter what she's in. Theron plays a spy but has more to her then meets the eye. She is unlike any spy out in the filed she keeps to herself and is very quiet and only talks when needed to or spoken to which gives for a very interesting character and performance from Theron. She is able to showcase such a interesting character in such a great way with soil emotion and her ability to immerse herself into her character. In the film like I said she doesn't speak much but it's one of the times where it really isn't needed in order to find out about this character because Charlize is able to showcase such great emotion through her emotion in her face and you understand it that you get it without a word being spoken which is amazing. As well she is able to be witty and have this dark sense of humour that is very dry while having this fence up around her emotionally while still delivering a great performance. She is able to understand every aspect of this character and shows us what she wants leaving bits untouched for the audience to discover for ourselves. Charlize is gives a performance of great emotion while also being able to be incredible in every action sequence entertaining us to the end. Overall Theron gives a great performance in this film.
James McAvoy : James gives a fantastic supporting performance in this film. James has been doing great this year earlier this year with Split and now this he's on a roll. James at first glance in the film seems like he is going to be the comedic aspect of the film which isn't the case at all which is part of his brilliant character and performance he gives in the film. He plays a character with such depth and so many layers it's such a complex role we get to see sides of James we haven't seen him bring to screen before. James really gives solid work in this film giving such different emotions making it seem so effortless. One moment he can drop the best line comedically then the next be incredibly threatening and cunning switching it in a matter of seconds. That's what he dose so well was show so many sides to this great character delivering a truly fantastic performance that in my opinion steals the show. For the reason he explores territory we haven't seen him do in a film before which is great to see and secondly he really gets into character. When I was watching him in the film and when he delivers his dialogue he dose it so honestly you believe him and he just gets under the skin of this role and becomes this character. To the point you can't take your eyes off of him. Overall James gives a greatly layered and complex supporting performance that steals the show.
David Leitch : David dose a ok job with direction on this film. David first off did a great job with the casting of the film the performances from everyone involved in the film is solid no doubt. As well as the spy thriller style he sprinkles on the film fit the story and tone greatly. The only problem I would say I had with his direction was his ability to explain what happened at times as I said it gets confusing and I thought he didn't do the best of job of explaining it clear enough resulting in a confusing plot at times. That is the only issue I had really. Besides that I thought his great ability to shoot the action sequences were very smooth and was able to direct an enjoyable spy thriller. So I would say he did a ok job but his direction could of been better.
The Lighting : The tones in this film is very specific. The colours used in the film was deep blue and grey and wow is it noticeable. The colours were very neutral in the film not really exploring much other colours which is fine. It fit the tone and style of the film greatly but can get tiring with the same colours throughout the film. It tried to go for this stylish 80's vibe which worked for most of the time. Overall good job guys.
The Cinematography : The camerawork in the film was greatly done. The angles in the film I enjoyed quite a bit to be honest. Their are some scenes that the camera shoots the action sequence in one long smooth tracking shot which I love when the cinematographer is able to do that and do it well which he dose here greatly. I thought the way the camera was able to move so smoothly and transition without it cutting away to fast was greatly done. Overall good camerawork.
