Movie Review : Transformers : The Last Knight
This film is what you'd expect from the franchise at this point this film is an over bloated film stuffed to the rim with excessive amounts of CGI and explosions with shallow characters and a very very confusing plot.
This film I had no expectation it would be good I hate to walk into this film with a low standard but since the first one was the only one that was actually good and the last three being terrible I didn't expect to be blown away. Now before I dive into the huge mess this film is I will talk about one positive from this film just one. The performance given by Hopkins was very entertaining to watch he's the only actor giving a good performance in this film and I enjoyed his presence when he was onscreen. That being said it could not remotely save this catastrophe this film is. When it went wrong I'll tell you first off it gave us a backstory to what the film was going to be about and that's fine but when you have to constantly hit me over the head reminding me this is why we're doing this and this is what this is it gets irritating.
Reason why is because you have to let the audience experience the film and not always tell them what's going to happen because then what's the point of watching the story unfold when your telling us every five seconds. The second issue I had was the shallow characters thrown in and the good characters being tossed offscreen their are two characters in the film that were enjoyable the teenager in the beginning of the film and Hopkins those two characters are the only ones that have depth to them and for the most part their not onscreen we get other characters that just are shallow and annoying. Lastly the action and plot was the biggest issue for me.
When you make a film your number one goal is to make a good movie and give the audience a plot that's not to confusing to follow to and have fun along the way. This film in the beginning for the most part I got but then half way through they throw more material and plot points that don't make sense so by the end of it your left with more questions then answers. Then the action it was non stop now I love action in movies but when you have it to the point where theirs nothing else them explosions you have a problem. You need to let the film breath and have character moments which this film doesn't have it just replaces the fun heart and entertainment we got from the first one and threw it out the window and just have action sequence after another and it got annoying fast. Overall this film is exactly what I expected a muddled mess of a franchise that should of ended after the first one.
This film is about the end of the transformers as we know it can they save mankind or is it to late?
Rated PG - 13 : for violence and intense sequences of sci-fi action, language, and some innuendo
Anthony Hopkins : Hopkins is the one of the few reasons I didn't walk out of the theatre was due to his great work in this film. Hopkins is one of the best actors and what I respect with what he did in this film or any film is he never phones in a pay check he always gives his all to any performance he ever dose and it shows here once again. When Hopkins is onscreen you can't take your eyes off of him when he's in a scene he's so striking in his role. He plays this grandfather like character and he dose it so well the way he delivers his lines was fantastic their was such life being brought from his dialogue from his performance which it should always be. He also has some great one liners that land and he had me grinning the entire time he just was so enjoyable to see in this film. Overall Hopkins gives a entertaining performance you can't help but enjoy.
Michael Bay : Congratulations Bay you have made another terrible sequel to a film series that should of ended back in 2007. Bay used to give really good films like Bad Boys they were cheesy but fun which this film lacks. He casted some good actors but for the most part actors that were in this film felt like they belonged in another movie. As well the over use of slow mo, explosions and tiring humour all fell flat. What Bay fails to do which has made the sequels this one included so bad is his ability to try new things and give us something fresh he is just giving us the same formula from the previous instalments in this film and throws in over bloated action to see if we won't notice. The chemistry with the actors were so bad I found no connection between them whatsoever the story was confusing and hard to follow and the CGI was way overused what ever happened to practical effects and fun action. Once again Bay goes back to the well rehashing all of what we have seen before brining nothing new to the table giving once again terrible direction on his part.
The Lighting : The tones in this film was very bright. Bay uses this colour pallet in most to all of his films the brownish yellow tone that is very bright and vibrant it is effective but gets irritating. The shifts in tones don't change it stays the same which gets boring because then it doesn't help match the scene it's just the same overall poor lighting and nothing new here.
The Cinematography : the camerawork in this was terrible! The camera couldn't stay on one thing for five seconds it was constantly cutting to new angles every minute not letting the scene play out. It got me so upset because if your cutting to different angles how am I supposed to get in the moment of the scene I can't same can be said for the action sequences too overall bad camerawork.
The Score : This films score felt way to dramatic! This film is about fighting robots and the score felt like a melody for a war film it was way to over the top and way to loud to the point where I couldn't hear what actors were saying. Overall the score was just bad.
