Movie Review : All Eyez On Me

All Eyez On Me
This film was ok but had the potential to be something truly great! Now this film has been receiving such hate and backlash over the film for not being true to the story of Tupac now is it the worst film of the year no. Could the film of improved on the dialogue and the messy plot at times yes it can. But is it a disaster of a film that people are putting it out to be absolutely not. This film had its fare share of flaws but it also has some positives too.

The positives which I'll start with was the performance from the lead actor Demetrius Shipp Jr was fantastic in the film I thought they cast the perfect actor to play the part he really brought the screen to life and really looked like Tupac. His performance is the sole reason it's getting ok and not terrible reviews because he really carries the film for the most part. Now for the flaws even tho the film has a great lead actor at the centre of the film it isn't enough to make up for the messy plot at times. The film is about Tupac's rise leading to when he got killed in the 90's. So knowing it was a bio pic from the start of his life to the end of it I didn't think you could or should screw up such a iconic rapper in the music industry's story. Sadly they did mess up the plot at times by giving us scenes that weren't needed or were left out entirely the film also suffers from not grasping onto something and giving it tension or a well written scene.

The film has build up but never executes to that build up that's where the film falls short. And the last thing I had a issue with was the length of the film this movie is 2h long now I have seen bio pics that have been long and they can be three four hours I don't care if it's done well and well told the length shouldn't matter. What should matter is telling the story of the person as accurate as possible this film tries that but since theirs no friction or execution  what we get is untimely long drawn out scenes that going on for to long which got me bored and wanted the scene to move on. Now is All Eyez on me a terrible film no it's not it's ok but it's a let down to a film that could of been the next best bio pic since straight outta Compton.

This film tells the life and death of Tupac Shakur and how he changed rap music in the industry forever.

Rated R : for language throughout, drug use, violence, some nudity and sexuality

Demetrius Shipp Jr : Shipp is amazing in this film! Tupac is one of the most iconic figures in music not just rap music but music in general so when you have such a well known person you want the perfect actor that can for one look like him secondly sing and sound like him and lastly give a great Portrayal of him. Shipp dose all those things and it's amazing to watch onscreen. He gives a emotional arc performance because you see him from his rough start to his rise and then his fall. So what we get to see from Shipp is a layer upon layer of emotions from him and it's fantastic. Their are many great scenes he really stands out in what I loved about his work in this film was his ability to switch so quickly and make that transition so smooth and quick but yet convincing at the same time. He could be the happiest guy in the room having so much fun the next he's up in some guys face yelling ready to pick a fight. And he dose it so well you can hear the truth in his words the rawness in his eyes and that's what really struck me from Shipp's performance was his commitment to give the most authentic and real portrayal of Tupac that he could and I will say he did it so well. When he was onstage you listened when he spoke he was in the scene always their one hundred percent committed to every once and aspect of each frame giving his all truly becoming Tupac. He stole the screen and dominated it overall Shipp gives an electric performance as Tupac.

Benny Boom : Benny gave really messy direction. Benny is a director I am unfamiliar with but after seeing what he did with this film I am a little hesitate to see his future projects. Benny was given one of the most prolific and incredible rappers ever to use a mic. I personally think F. Gary Gray who directed Straight Outta Compton should of helmed this film because I think he would of been the perfect guy with the right vision to steer this film in the right direction.

Reason I say that is because what Benny did was he took Tupac and brought us through how he made his tracks ok great but what he failed to do was give us friction or any bit of depth to a scene. What Outta Compton did so well was its ability to anchor the film with a straight plot and well paced storytelling and scenes which he wasn't able to accomplish here.

I think he just took this film and said hey lets just make a film on Tupac that people already know. He wasn't able to give us something new it felt more like just scenes of Tupac and then him dying without any emotional depth or good dialogue for the audience to get hooked by. What else was wrong was the length you can make a film long and it be good when doing a bio pic but since their was no execution to the film it just felt to drawn out and boring at times. He also gave scenes that we didn't need and then just skipped parts that people wanted to see so I think his style of direction he took this film in a direction that should of gone another way so that's why due to the drawn out length of the film messy plot and bad dialogue i can't say I enjoyed his direction sorry the direction should of been done by someone else because this was terrible direction.

The Lighting : the tones were very colourful remedied me of Straight Outta Compton! The minute of tones were a splash of everything really with a grey tone that made the screen explode in colours and make the frame pop out which was nice so I will say the lighting was good.

The Soundtrack : The music is all Tupac! If you like Tupac and his tracks and want to hear his hit songs you won't be disappointed it's all in hear and I love it.
