Movie Review : Okja
Okja
This film is gripping, moving, original, well acted and one of the best films of the year! This film had me in tears from the minute the story unfolds you are compelled to find out what happens. This film is an emotional punch to the chest and will have you standing on your feet cheering with tears flowing down your face. This also is one of the most original films of the year that has truly gotten my attention and has many messages that people can learn from in this film.
The cast in this film is top notch fantastic. The cast is Paul Dano, Lilly Collins, Jake Gyllenhaal and a incredible lead performance from seo- Hyun Ahn. Everyone is on top of their game in this film giving their all to each of their roles. The direction as well on this film is extraordinary a filmmaker named Bong Joon Ho directed this picture and he is amazing at the craft of writing and direction. He brings such emotion and heart to the screen and he gets you so into the story that you'll be talking about it long after it's over. This is one of the few films this year that has hit me in the chest emotionally like this film has it's a incredible piece of film and everyone should see it this film is not to be missed.
This film is about a girl who grows up with this animal and when it is taken away from her she will stop at nothing to get her best friend back
Rated R : language and some disturbing content
seo- Hyun Ahn : Thiw young actress brought me to tears and truly moved me with her electric performance in this film! This actress I am unfamiliar with her and haven't seen any of her past work for sure I will check it out and also keep an eye out for her work in the future as she is truly gifted. Seo - Hyun Ahn is only 13 years old and has truly stunned me with her amazing emotional range in this film. She looses her friend that is an animal and will stop at nothing to get her back. The raw emotion this girl shows onscreen is captivating. She has moments of true joy and happiness where you see her full of joy and then the next can scream on the top of her lungs work tears streaming down her face saying she wants to see Okja her friend. Their was not one moment in the film where I wasn't watching her she is so compelling to watch and their is no false emotion in her performance. The acting she gives in this is so genuine the emotions she gives cannot be fake it seemed so real when you see it. Overall This young actress is truly gifted and moved me to tears and has given one of the best lead performances by an actress that I've seen all year.
Paul Dano : Paul gives his best work in this film since his work in their will be blood. Paul is a terrific actor giving great work in films like prisoners and the one that stood out to me was their will be blood for his terrific supporting performance in that film. He is a great actor and he shines once again in this emotional film. Paul at first glance doesn't seem like a good guy but once the audience spends time with him you see his intentions are good and he makes you really root for him. Paul gives a very gentle performance in this film. He didn't need to be loud or scream to stand out he gave such truth in the words he spoke when he delivered the lines he had you felt that it was coming from a real place and it didn't feel like acting it felt real and that's when you have a great performance on your hands when you can see that from an actor. He just surprised me with how great he was in this film when he's onscreen you can't take your eyes off of him he's so intriguing to watch. He stands out in a lot of scenes in this film it's hard to pick just one. His range was terrific as well in the film. Like I said he was very quiet and he was able to connect to the audience and move you without having to yell for you to understand what he's trying to say he says it in such a quiet way and it's fantastic. Then he also can show such passion in his dialogue he just has such depth to him he's truly terrific in this film. Paul overall gives one of his best performances to date in this film.
Jake Gyllenhaal : Jake once again steals the frame and shines in this film with his great supporting performance in this film. Jake is one of my favourite actors working today he commits to every role and always gives a great performance with last years work in nocturnal animals and earlier this year with Life Jake has been having great performance one after the other and this film is another one of his great pieces of work. He plays this big tv star who to the public is this high pitched, energetic persona but Beneath the surface something darker lurks. Jake plays it so well in the film the minute he shows up onscreen you are captivated by every frame he's in. From the way he talks to the way he moves and looks Jake really gives a transformative performance in this film. He brings that energetic persona to life and doesn't hold back giving such a high pitch and upbeat personality and he is so great in it. But then he can switch it in seconds and be dark and show sides that we thought this character didn't inhabit. That's what I love about Jake's work in the film he is able to transition through two split personalities one being the upbeat guy the other being the dark brooding one and he plays it so well. His range in this is terrific truly. When he's being upbeat it comes off funny to the audience but Jake plays it serious and that's what makes it funny but then he gets you to hate him with what he dose next. And the emotions he brings is so real the look in his eyes are so raw and real it seems so genuine that you can't take your eye off of him theirs no false note In his performance. From the sound of his high pitched laugh and voice Jake captivates you with his brilliant supporting performance in this film.
Lily Collins : Lily has been impressing me more and more with her work recently. We haven't seen Lily really show her dramatic muscles and explore that place emotionally which she dose here so brilliantly. Now she's not in the film as much as her co - stars but she makes every moment count the minute she's onscreen she dominates it with her incredible range and emotion. Their is one scene in particular that she got to me and brought me to tears. It's a scene that requires her to cry and the way she delivered her lines in that film making her voice shake the tears flow down her face it seemed so real. Just like how Michelle Williams stole the screen with her one moment in Manchester by the sea Collins dose the same here and it's brilliant. She stunned me with her great supporting performance in this film. Her work in this should not go unnoticed she is truly entertaining in this film.
Bong Joon Ho : This filmmaker is a extraordinary director! His work I am unfamiliar with but I will check out his past work and I will keep an eye out for his future projects as he is a gifted and amazing director. His work in this is beyond brilliant it's the work of genius he also wrote the film he was able to write such a moving and emotional story and bring his words to life with incredible vision. The style of direction he gave was outstanding he wrote characters people connect to and then layer it with such a gripping story and emotional impact and the way he was able to showcase that onscreen was amazing. He makes you fall in love with this animal and he gets you so invested in his story while giving the audience a message to learn as well. Also he casted great actors and got such fantastic performances from his cast. He just brings such real and incredible storytelling to the screen with his breathtaking imagery and incredible words he wrote. This director is a genius who has crafted a beautiful story what incredible writing and direction this is great storytelling at its finest.
The Lighting : The tones and colours of this film was beautiful! The incredible colours that exploded onscreen with such beauty in the the Forrest was amazing giving the scene such life. Then giving it a grey feel to when it's in the city I loved the transition in colours to match the tone of the scene it was well done.
The Cinematography : The camerawork on this is fantastic! The way the camera was able to showcase the love this girl has with this animal is so touching and the camera was able to capture every moment showing the way she looks him in the eye getting a great close up of the two it was also great landscape shots as well. The cowers work is nothing short of brilliance I loved every moment of it.
The Score : The music composed in this film is incredible! The melody made for this film is so soft and the instruments have crafted such sounds of beauty and emotion that it matches the film and the tone perfectly and is so well done it shouldn't go unnoticed I loved it.
