Movie Review : The Mummy

The Mummy
The mummy is really dead in this film. Ok I promise I'll try to resisted myself from using mummy puns but this film was just terrible I'll be honest with you guys. You guys deserve the truth and this movie is a really convoluted mess and the only good aspect of this film at all was Cruise's performance. When I heard this film was being redone I was nervous because I love the 1999 Mummy film that film is a fun action adventure film I can rewatch its a blast to see over and over. So I wanted this film to be good to the point I didn't watch any trailers I only saw 30 seconds of one trailer because I wanted to be surprised and I think trailers give to much away anyways. So the hype was high for me with this film and I have to say I am let down by this film.

I'll talk about the flaws first ok the tone of this film I get its dark because the original Boris Karloff Mummy was a horror film I get that but I hate to compare films what the 1999 Mummy did so well was have that fun action adventure while making it creepy but not to dark and that's where this film starts to go wrong. The tone for the film was so dark and grim it just felt depressing the colours were even dark. I understand you need to have horror aspects I get that but you need light hearted moments to let the film and audience breath from the Hugh serious tone.

Which they sorta tried I guess in the film they inject comedy into it and it just doesn't land because it felt like they were trying way to hard and I didn't laugh once I just didn't find it funny in the slightest to be honest I found it rather annoying. Jake Johnson an actor who is really good is so I hate to say annoying in the film he just pops up and makes jokes then leaves and it's not just every now and then when he's onscreen its joke after joke after joke and it got tiring fast.  For the plot it just felt like random scenes put together so they could get to the end scene to introduce the start of the dark universe. The film has no substance it had little action the chemistry between the actors were bad and the plot fell apart so it felt like a rushed and shallow film. Tom is truly carrying this film his performance is the only reason to see this film he commits to every film and I give him props for not just cashing in a performance he never dose and I admire that. Besides that this film is one of the most disappointing films I've seen all year.

This film is a retelling of the Mummy and a start to the dark universe. The film tells the story is centred around nick a scavenger who uncovers the mummy and what he sees next is nothing he prepared for

Rated PG : for violence, action and scary images, and for some suggestive content and partial nudity

Tom Cruise : Tom took real Cruise control of this movie. Tom is one of the best working actors of his generation he really brings his all in this messy film and wow do I admire him for that. Tom plays a scavenger who starts getting flashes and really starts to have a hard time grasping of what's real and wants not and the way he shows it onscreen is fantastic. He brings as much weight and depth to his character that he could. Sadly since the script was poorly written he did best with what he had and he really pushes himself in this film to give a good performance and he dose just that. In the film his character is very shallow but Tom tries to show as many layers to his character that he could to get the audience to connect to him and he dose that. He shows sides of humour, sadness and anger and it is presented so well onscreen from him. When you hear his witty dialogue from him you can't help but grin because Tom makes it work then when he's sad you can see such sorrow and sadness in his eyes he really is genuine onscreen in the fillm. For that I will say Tom gives a great performance and his work in this film is better then this film deserves.

Alex Kurtzman : This film is so poorly directed! Alex is a director who I have not seen any previous work of and know very little of as a director and after seeing this he makes me rethink seeing his future work and I'll say why. He made this film a depressing overly dark film with so many side plots it was hard to follow along and then at the same time set up the dark universe by bringing in Russell Crowe while trying to tell the story that's being told onscreen. That's way too much to take in from one film if he focused on the film at hand maybe it wouldn't of been such a mess secondly it had no enjoyment the film has forced humour which Lasts ten minutes then goes back to the dark tones but then tries to bring the action in so Alex couldn't establish what tone he was going for. As well the actors had no chemistry whatsoever I felt no connection from them which made me not invested in the characters whatsoever. Alex took such a beloved film that could of been a terrific start to the dark universe but instead made it a bleak mess of a film that is leaving out the fun enjoyment we came to love from these films. Overall terrible direction from Alex.

The Lighting : the tones were so depressing! It was the same tone throughout the whole damn film. It was a mix of dark grey and black and it just makes you depressed because their is no light hearted moments the lighting is so one note in this film that it just gives this bland bleak tone that is so bad it's hard not to notice and not in a good way sorry guys I didn't enjoy the lighting in this film.

The Score : The music was very quiet. I would of loved to of spoken more about the music but I could hardly hear it for majority of the film. It really gets loud near the end and it has a good. Rhythm at times but overall the score was just didn't stand out for me as much as I hoped it would.
