Movie Review : Colossal
Colossal
This is a gem of a movie! Colossal packs a incredible story with truly fantastic performances from Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis. The film is so well made and incredibly directed and written. This film is probably one of the most refreshing and original films I've seen all year. It was so enjoyable to watch and it's so sad this film has been overlooked due to the other big blockbusters that have come out. This film deserves to be seen it is a compelling tale that will have you talking about it long after the film ends.
The film centres around a woman named Gloria who is an alcoholic and moves back home to rebuild herself. When she encounters her old friend from the past and gets a job at his bar everything is good until she finds out that theirs a alien attacking Seoul and she may be more involved in it then she thought she was.
Rated R : for Language
Anne Hathaway : Anne delivers one of her best performances in years with her work in this film. This Oscar winning actress has been under the radar for the last while not really doing big full blown big budget films but instead has been doing low budget indie projects like this that sadly gets easily overlooked. Anne plays an alcoholic who is trying to rebuild herself after her boyfriend kicks her out due to her problem. The way that Anne was able to present that onscreen was simply fantastic she really brings her A game in the film showing such real and raw emotion that I haven't seen from her in a while. She made me feel invested in her character and really feel for her due to her great ability at crafting a fantastic performance onscreen. Theirs so many scenes she is just amazing in she has parts where she's holding it together and really smiling and the next she is full of sorrow and sadness and she's so real in her work and she shows it greatly here once again. When she is onscreen she is committed to every ounce of dialogue giving the most true representation of her character she could give and it's amazing to watch. Her emotional performance was just so captivating to see she truly is incredible in this film. Overall Anne delivers a award worthy performance in this film that truly is fantastic.
Jason Sudeikis : Jason delivers a career defining performance in this film! I love Jason as an actor and I have seen a lot of his work such as the campaign, sleeping with other people and were the millers. If you noticed those were all comedic roles I listed which leads me to my next point. Jason for the most part in his career has given comedic performances and not really shown us what he can do dramatically onscreen. After seeing Jason in this film a drama something he hasn't done before he blew me away with his dramatic range in this film he is extraordinary in every scene of this film. Jason's dramatic turn in this film is nothing short of brilliance he was able to balance the good nice guy act and then he could within seconds be so haunting and terrifying. The sides he has shows in this film he hasn't done before and the lengths he went to go into unexplored territory and showcase emotions he hasn't done before was amazing to watch. In the film he shines in multiple scenes but when he spoke and everything he was one hundred and ten percent committed to every ounce of his character and giving his all onscreen. It was incredible to watch the many emotional layers of Jason in this film and he really for me gives his best work in this film. From the way he spoke and the look in his eye he was a completely different person overall Jason gives an outstanding award worthy supporting performance.
Nacho Vigalondo : This man is a visionary! Nacho is a director I have not heard of or seen any of his previous work before viewing this film but after I will sure check out his past projects and future projects as well. He is an amazing director he impressed me with his work on this film. He not only directed but also wrote as well and he crafted a original, fresh compelling story that pulled me in and really got me intruded with the story and characters. The style of his direction was very fantastic. He would let you see each character giving them a well written backstory and have fun components but also make time for some dramatic beats along with the story too. He just stunned me with his great originality and extraordinary writing. I cannot wait to see what he dose next he is truly a great director and writer. He got you to care for these characters but also kept you engaged with the very interesting plot and it just all works so beautifully. As well as getting fantastic performances from his cast. Overall Nacho not only delivers great direction but great writing also the direction was amazing this man is a genius.
The Lighting : The Tones used was very grey and blue and it worked well with the story. It would burst in colour at certain parts but for the most was grey and blue and I liked the look it had it fit the emotion the story had well and it just really was well done great job guys.
The Cinematography : The camerawork in the film was very well done giving great wide shots and really giving smooth transitions with the camera. Not always using multiple cuts but letting it go for a little longer instead of always using different angles I loved that and capturing the scope of it all great job guys.
The Score : The music was incredibly well composed in the film. It had this electric feel to it that fit the tone well and got the right sounds for the right scenes it was well composed and had a great melody throughout the film I loved it.
