Movie Review : Hell or High Water
Hell or High Water
This is a terrific film! Chris pine delivers the best performance of his career along with a great supporting performance by Jeff Bridges giving his best work since crazy heart. The plot is engaging and makes you cheer cry this film is a masterful film Hands down one of the years best films.
A divorced father and ex criminal who are brothers work together to rob banks in order to save their family's ranch
Rated R : some strong violence, Language throughout and brief sexuality
Chris Pine : Chris delivers an incredible performance in this film! Pine is known for his work in Star Trek mostly and action films so we haven't really seen him explore his dramatic roots yet. In this film for the first time we get to see Chris outside of his comfort zone in a hard boiled drama film and he steals the show with his work in the film. His character is very quiet but the quietness speaks volumes and is a very serious and cynical person. He was able to pull it off so well onscreen the sheer emotion Chris brought to it was heartbreaking and astonishing. When he was onscreen it was just this electricity that surged through his performance that made you not want to take your eyes off him he was just so compelling to watch onscreen. When he spoke the tone in his voice didn't sound like Chris it sounded like his character he fully became his role and I love that. Every scene he is in he commits 100% to and is so genuine and believable onscreen. It is great to see Pine finally take on a drama like this he pulls it off perfectly and is marvellous in it I hope Chris dose another drama because after seeing this he really has a strong suit in the genre. Not only is the performance he gives in this film great I believe it's worthy for award season especially the Oscars. Overall Chris delivers an outstanding performance that is his best performance of his career.
Jeff Bridges : Jeff delivers his finest work in years with this film. Jeff Bridges is a legendary actor and has given us great performances with films like True Grit, The Fisher King and Crazy Heart which won him an Academy Award for best actor. This performance he gives just adds to the list of fantastic performances he has delivered. In this film he plays a aged sherif who goes on one last case and throughout the film he is incredibly comical and funny. But what the brilliance that Jeff also brought to the role was the serious dramatic side within the character as well. At times the character is very quiet and serious and the way Bridges was able to transition that emotional ark is outstanding. Their is a scene with Chris and Jeff and it gave me chills the way the actors played off each other in that scene was amazing. Jeff's performance in this film should not go unnoticed. He is funny, dramatic and heartbreaking in the film once again Jeff delivers one of his best performances of his career.
David Mackenzie : David gives masterful direction in this cinematic masterpiece! I have not seen any of David's work but the way he was able to tell a story was so engaging and the way he fleshed out the characters to keep you invested in them and feel connected to them in some way was brilliant. He takes a basic plot and turns it into this gigantic wonderful piece of film. He was able to get great performances out of his entire cast while also giving the film a taste of great music for the score piece it all just fell into place perfectly the way he crafted it all together. His style of film is so great you can't take your eyes off the screen and I love when s director can do that and David dose it beautifully. He deserves Oscar buzz for his direction it is genius overall phenomenal direction.
The Lighting : tones used in this film played as a huge contributing factor to the story, mood and feel of the picture and its beautiful. The way they used yellow, and gold tones for the look of the film was great it really was the best choice of colours for the film and got me in the right mindset for what the film was going to be. Overall loved the lighting great job guys.
The Cinematography : The camerawork in the film was outstanding! The way they were able to capture the tension and heartbreaking mood of the film through the multiple shots was great. It really made me feel immersed in the film and right their in the middle of the action loved the camerawork on the film great job guys.
The Score : the music plays a huge part in the film. The score is haunting, emotional and full of tension and sets the tone of the scene right. Not only is the score beautifully woven together but the soundtrack has some really great song choices for the film and it gets you singing along Overall magnificent score and soundtrack.
