Movie Review : Goosebumps
Goosebumps
This film surprised me way better then I expected it to be. It is a great family film and a great film for those who grew up watching the show and reading the books such as myself. Along with a great performance from Jack Black and including our favourite characters from the books. this film is a great tribute to our favourite kids horror book Franchise. this film is one of the most refreshing and best films of the year hands down.
When a kid moves next door he finds out that a weird man is doing unusual things next door turns out to be the author RL Stine of the popular kids books goosebumps and the kid unlocked one of Stine's original printings of his books and unlocked it unleashing the monsters out into the world. They have to get them back in the book before its to late.
Rated PG : for scary and intense creature action and images, and for some rude humour
Jack Black : A surprisingly rich performance! I know you'll find it shocking for me to say this about his performance in a kids film but think about it. He's always done comedic and upbeat characters in this film he plays a mysterious, mean and strict guy. And he plays it so well which is interesting because we don't usually see Black do this kind of role. When he was onscreen delivering his lines he was in the moment fully committed to every scene changing his voice a bit and showing us a side to him which we haven't seen much of which was fantastic. He has done a serious role which I liked him in was called Bernie and to see him go back to that serious type role was nice so we can see him show is real acting roots was great. He would yell and get angry and be so believable in the scene so when he was saying it you believe that he meant it that's how committed her was to this character. Overall Black delivers a outstanding performance.
Rob Letterman : Rob gives surprisingly good direction in this fantastic film. Why I say that is because Rob has been known to do some really bad films such as Gullivers Travel but he has done some good ones like Monsters and Aliens. But this film in my opinion is his best directed film to date. Reason why is because he didn't just stick to one book he threw all the characters in and made the author of the book the main character which is original and hasn't been done before. As well as keep the audience intrigued with great character development. And paying homage to the great book series and this film reminds us why we fell in love with it back in the 90's. At the same time being scary like the books and staying true to it as well as including comedic elements which is what goosebumps is about. It wouldn't of been as good without Rob great job you really redeemed yourself.
The Lighting : Had a dark tone it to while keeping it bright at times so the tones keep on shifting throughout the film which I found great. They didn't just stick to one they branched out great job guys.
The Cinematography : Had one worth mentioning sequence theirs a chase scene in the supermarket and it got you to feel like your running with them through all of it and it's great it puts you in the middle of the action great camerawork.
The Score : Danny Elfman creates another enchanting and beautifully written score once again. Danny has done some great pieces of music over the years mostly for Tim Burton but the music he did in this film fit the frame greatly. At the same time helped express the emotion of the scene another great piece of music composed by Danny Elfman.
