Movie Review : Straight Outta Compton
Straight Outta Compton
This film is easily one of the best films of the year! From the fantastic tunes to the setup of how the legendary group N.W.A. Was formed. They didn't glamorize how the group was back in the day the showed it how it was very realistic which brought another layer of authenticity to the picture. On top of all that fantastic performances from the cast this is truly a great picture if you admire their music or just like a great music bio pic you will love this film.
This film tells the story of how N.W.A. Grew up in the rough streets of Compton to becoming one of the original pioneers of rap music and how they changed the music industry forever.
Corey Hawkins : Corey's performance as Dr. Dre is outstanding! Before I saw this film I haven't heard any of the names of the cast so I wasn't really familiar with their acting style. But I have heard of Dr. Dre and I wanted to see if he could pull of portraying Dre and he knocked it out of the park. Corey steals every scene he's in with how much he looks Dre to his ability to capture the audiences attention with his great acting and emotional range. I was surprised cause he could give the biggest smile in the room the next he can break your heart with his line delivery and seeing tears flowing from his face. He was perfect for this role no other actor I could imagine playing this role expect for Corey. He just did a great job at peeling layers of his character so we got to see all these different sides of him and his emotional ability. I will definitely check out films that Corey dose in the future. Overall Corey delivers a scene stealing performance
Jason Mitchell : Jason's performance as Easy-E is fantastic! Before this film was being promoted I've never heard of this group then I saw some pictures of them and heard some of their tracks. and Jason gives a grade A brilliant performance as Easy. He looks just like him giving a raw performance and has a great voice to. When he was onscreen and he was delivering his dialogue he was right in the moment soaking up every aspect of the scene. So when he spoke you believed him that's how good Jason is in this film. He wasn't serious all the time in the film at times he would also be smiling and joking around which is great we got to see Jason's emotional range go from angry, happy and sad and play them all so very well. And the film isn't just set in one year it goes from the 80's to the 90's which is great so we get to see his character change and evolve in front of our eyes. He gave a excellent performance as Easy-E.
F. Gary Gray : His direction was outstanding! He made it feel like a real period piece with where it was shot to the outfits everything he made you feel like you were make in the 80's early 90's. And then on top of that he hires a great cast to portray this legendary. And then he hired Cubes's son to play him like that just brings more realism to the picture. Talking about realism what I like a lot with what he did with this film was he didn't glamorize what the group went through those many years ago he showed it as how it was. Which was fantastic it was realistic and I respect how he did that. He also had Dr. Dre and Ice Cube as producers on the film which brings another layer of authenticity to it. Then he got the great tunes from the group and played their greatest tracks in the film like theirs no other director who could of done a better job of doing this film.
The Lighting : Loved every minute of it. The lighting in this film was gritty and dark which fit the frame of the picture perfectly. Since it takes place in the hood then shows them getting noticed in the music industry the tones of lighting are different throughout the film. Which I like they weren't afraid to experiment with different kinds of lighting and for that they came out with a great result great job guys.
The Cinematography : Great Camerawork used in this film! The way they shot was great but their are some scenes in particular that really stood out. Such as the riot scenes on the street to the car chase. I liked how they made you feel like you were their they had great wide and panning shots. Very well done great job guys.
The Soundtrack : The music in this film is so good you'll be dancing in your seat from songs like Straight Outta Compton to so many others. They play the great tracks of N.W.A. great tracks they chose to use in the film definitely a album worth downloading.
