Movie Review : Black Mass

Black Mass
This film is my new favourite film of all time. This is one of the years best films it is a truly fantastic film. Providing a outstanding performance from Depp&Joel. Along with a intriguing plot mixed with great direction by Scott Cooper this film keeps your attention from beginning to finish.

This film tells the true story of gangster James "Whitey" Bulger and how he went from being a local tough gangster to a kingpin because of FBI corruption. Resulting in Bulger being named as the most notorious gangster in Boston history.

Rated R : disturbing images, strong violence and strong language

Johnny Depp : The best performance of Depp's career! When I saw trailers for this film I was so excited because Depp looked like he tapped into that dark dramatic side which we haven't seen since Donnie Brasco and Blow. And I said Sweeney Todd was his best performance this performance he gives in it tops it by far. In this film when Johnny was onscreen you would be quiet and listen because Johnny changed the way he spoke and walked he was a completely different person . Along with the makeup he had wow just wow it was astonishing the blue contacts he had for the blue eyes were chilling and the hair all of it was great it was perfect makeup. From the line delivery like when he spoke he was spot on with the accent and his voice sounded different and he was so intimidating  when he was onscreen he was absolutely electric. He deserves the Oscar for best actor for his performance hands down not just because he hasn't gotten one it's because Johnny gives a solid performance and went places with this role places we haven't seen before and a side of him we haven't gotten to see as well so Depp definitely deserves Oscar recognition. Overall Johnny Depp gave one of the best performances of the year and that I've ever seen.

Joel Edgerton : Joel's best performance to date! I have seen Joel act before in films such as Warrior,The Great Gatsby and Zero Dark Thirty. So I've seen his acting range and know he can act extremely well onscreen. But his performance in this film is truly amazing. He plays John Connolly a close friend of Bulger who he grew up with and the way Joel plays him was great. From the great makeup and costume Joel's costume help him really shape and get into the skin of John. Along with great acting on his part the way he played John was fantastic he is loyal to Bulger and then lying to the FBI and his wife and the way he plays it is great cause you believe what he's saying he means it with his whole heart. And he gets wrapped up in every scene when Depp and Joel are in a scene together it's electric. Joel's accent also was spot on he really gave a entertaining performance I enjoyed it overall Joel's best performance of his career.

Scott Cooper : Once again another great directed  film by Scott! Scott Cooper directed Crazy Heart a terrific film which earned Jeff Bridges his first Oscar and Out Of The Furnace was poorly written but the performances got out of his cast was fantastic. So when I heard he directed this film I was very happy and glad he did because no other director would be able to make this film so gripping and get the performances from the cast like Scott can. His direction in this film is brilliant from the sets to the costumes all of made you feel like you were back in the 70's and 80's along with great makeup and a powerhouse performance by Depp and great performances from the cast. That's what I like about his direction in this film and his previous ones he dose performance driven films which is that the film is shinning the light on the actors performance more then the story that's their to support it but it's mainly about the actors. Which I like about him and in this film he doesn't just get good performances he gets a fantastic film the story was great the cinematography like everything all the hard work paid off because this is Scott Coopers best directed film to date. Overall amazing direction by Scott.

The Lighting : loved the tones used in this picture! The film is set in the 70's early 80's in south Boston so they used darker tones of lighting and then in other places would use other tones but not making it to obvious that their was a shift in lighting. Which I liked they tried to make the lighting feel like a old fashioned 70's film which was a very interesting how they did it and it paid off because the lighting is fantastic really helped the setting and tone of the film great job guys.

The Cinematography : Some shots worth mentioning! When You see Depp in the beginning of the film theirs this close shot on his face and I liked how it was close up and not far away because then you can really see what he looks like when he delivers his line it's like your right their sitting listening to him speak. Overall outstanding cinematography great job guys.

The Score : Very calm and menacing! The score in the film you can't hear that loudly but is still beautifully well done. It's very well composed and fit the frame of the film perfectly loved it.
