Movie Review : Fargo
Fargo
This film is a quirky, original film that has earned it’s way into one of the best films to ever be captured on film. I heard so much positive things about this film but I didn’t expect it to be a modern day masterpiece. I love the Coen brothers style of filmmaking with great films like No Country for Old Men and The Big Lebowski. So if you love a great crime film and a dose of the Coen’s this film is for you.
A Simple man hires two men to kidnap his wife but of course things don’t go according to plan then a police officer gets to the bottom of the case
Rated R: strong violence, language and Sexuality
William H. Macy : William delivers a surprisingly rich performance! I have a seen a good amount of Macy’s performances in films such as Jurassic Park 3, Lincoln Lawyer and more. But I haven’t really see him deliver a strong serious performance like this before. From the script delivery to the way he formed his character with his outfits was great. He expressed and showed parts of himself that haven’t been captured on film before such as his ability to express his emotions in a full forced believable way. Don’t get me wrong his other performances in his past films was great but not like to this magnitude he would express happiness and be so likeable then the next you wouldn’t be able to look at him because your disgusted with that character. That’s how good he was so incredibly convincing onscreen so much so he earned himself a Oscar nomination for his performance in this film Overall I enjoyed his performance.
Frances McDormand : One of the best lead performances by an actress I have ever seen! Before seeing this film I have only seen her in Burn After Reading, so I didn’t know much about her acting range or what she can deliver onscreen. This performance was incredible the way she spoke with the accent to the way she walked everything was to a key perfect. When she was onscreen you can’t take your eyes cause she was that good she gave a scene stealing performance. Her character is very perky and positive and sees things from a different point of view. But she also can go serious in seconds which was brilliant she was able to shift through different emotions making it convincing while entertaining the audience with her likeable character. She won the Academy Award for her performance in this film and well deserved it overall she gave one of the most entertaining and pitch perfect performances by an actress ever captured on film.
Steve Buscemi : Steve delivers another great performance once again! Steve blew me away with his acting range and how great he explored his character as Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs. I didn’t think he would be able to meet that bar of excellence he reached like he did in Reservoir but yet again he gives another great performance always topping his last. He plays a serious but at times comedic character so your really keeping your eye on him because you don’t really know if he will turn on his partner or what side he’s really on. And the way he played this complex character was fantastic. He brought entertaining sarcastic wit like he always shows onscreen. Overall I enjoyed his performance he should do more performances like this because crime, drama films really suit him and if he keeps on doing this genre with this kind of performance he will have a Oscar in no time. Overall enjoyable performance once again.
Joel&Ethan Coen : These two modern day visionary’s are the reason why I love going to the theatre! When these two collaborators work together on a film they give you something fresh and things you haven’t seen before. They take you out of your world and fully immerse you in the world they have created onscreen. Which for me as a critic is something I always want to feel from the directors that I can feel that I am in that universe. It is quiet rare to find that but these guys deliver it every time. No other director could of done this film only the Coen brothers could capture such magic on film. They wrote a simple storyline but brought this quirky and original take on it that made it so compelling to watch. While setting the film in the perfect environment for film to be set in. And getting outstanding performances from their cast. They walk the tight rope while juggling all that and result in a Entertaining film. Their style of filmmaking is amazing and they stamped their signature on this film with it they definitely deserved the Oscar for this film huge snub but they did win the award for original screenplay im glad they won the award for that but lets be honest they should of also won the award for best director no other film that year came close to the great direction provided in this film of pure excellence.
The Lighting : It was great fit the mood and tone of the picture perfectly! The lighting was great it would be colourful then at parts very grey and dark toned. It helped explain the mood of the scene great job guys.
The Cinematography : It was truly outstanding! It helped breath great life into this fantastic picture! The angles and shots used in this film. Such as when Frances character goes over to the body in the middle of nowhere in a pile of snow the shots used was spectacular. The way the camera moved so smoothly and used angles I haven’t seen before was great. Definitely deserved An Oscar for its great camerawork brilliant job guys.
The Score : Truly moving and beautiful! It would express the scene when no dialogue was needed and it was sheer genius. It was just so well composed I do not have enough words to describe how stunning it was. Overall loved it.
