Movie Review : I Care A Lot

I Care a Lot

This film is a colourful, evil, slick and well acted film that needs to be seen. This is a film that has very serious Gone Girl vibes not just because Rosamund Pike is the centre but it’s due to the tone the film gives off and trust me that’s a massive compliment. As this film slips under your skin in very intriguing ways as the main character is doing incredibly unmoral things to innocent people. That being said you can’t help but somewhat root for her but when bad things happen to her you’re not surprised due to the wrong actions she’s done to others. So your constantly in this emotional tug and war within yourself of if it’s right to keep following this character along and I loved that inner conflict that J Blakeson made the audience feel.

Secondly, The film is terrifying in such real ways that left me unsettled at parts of this film. As the film takes on the subject of abusing your privilege as a caregiver for the elderly and it is shown in very real ways that’s not sugar coated. Their definitely is a style to the picture but it never agrees with the behaviour she is doing whatsoever. As its constantly giving you very real moments in great emotional raw ways that’s impossible to look away from. The film is constantly having you on edge due to its strong narrative and unsettling tone and it pulls you in. Whats so damn frightening is that the main character is unable to feel any emotion for anyone else but herself. It’s a dangerous sort of naivety that comes across as a psychopath because she is doing such unmoral things and has no remorse for her actions.

The performance by Rosamund Pike is freaking genius! She once again delivers another amazing performance. Here slips into the skin and bones of the character to such a genuine honesty that you are gripped by every word she says. She elevates the already amazing screenplay with her genuine emotional depth that can be frightening and at times sympathetic all wrapped into one and Pike brings what is truly a frighteningly emotional numb performance of sheer energy that is impossible to look away from. Everyone else in the cast is Alsop great from Diane Wiest who brings a fantastic supporting turn in a very subtle performance that is both heartbreakingly real but also shockingly scary at times. She brings the energy needed to deliver such a impactful performance and then you also have Peter Dinklage who looks like he is having so much fun onscreen chewing up the scenes with such fun energy. Everyone in this film is terrific and their is not one bad performance but it is due to the performance by Rosamund Pike that will have you in total awe.

Lastly, I Care A Lot is a film that is unapologetic in its execution of its narrative and packs quiet the punch with its brutal honesty. On top of its powerfully real story Pike delivers what is arguably one of her finest performances ever in a high energy psychotic performance that is riveting to see unfold onscreen. This film is shocking, heartbreaking, scary and gripping from start to finish. I Care A Lot is incredible from either the knockout performances or strong story this film is  terrific I recommended everyone check out.

This film centres around a woman that makes false medical claims against seniors so she can become a guardian for them and control their life but when she thinks she hit the jackpot with a client things she never expected start unraveling.

Rated R : Language Throughout|Some Violence

Rosamund Pike : Pike is a genius! Rosamund Pike is one of the most underrated actors working today as she always brings amazing performance one after the other. Then for some reason her work always goes under the radar sure Gone Girl got her a good amount of attention but that’s about it in terms of notice for her. As she’s given great work in other stuff in films like Hostiles and a current war and now I care a lot. She’s truly terrific in this film as she plays it so brilliantly that we see the character is a sociopath to a huge degree but it’s Pike’s charm and emotional depth that makes it seem mentally unhinged and haunting to watch onscreen. As she presents this character on the exterior as a emotionally put together person who seems perfectly fine but it’s all a front to hide her sinister side and she’s trained herself to such a degree she can switch so effortlessly. As you’ll see her doing something truly awful but has a smile on her face and calm voice and it’s more unsettling when she’s doing horrible things and is totally mentally unhinged and thinks what she’s doing is right. It’s horrifying and Pike steps up to the task by giving this very complex performance of deep layers that can be sweet, psychotic, funny and she lays her hooks into the audience and captivates us with her incredible onscreen performance. I’d say it’s emotionally impressive because she’s able to switch to two entirely different emotional depths while keeping that smile plastered on her face and theirs something truly unnerving with her character that Pike brings out onscreen brilliantly. She can say the most mean thing with this nice tone and you can see over the course of the film this caring persons she’s built start to crack and we see the sinister side creep out more which she’s worked so hard to compress. It’s a performance that is incredible as she’s able to bring such a honest and real delivery to her words that you feel in such raw emotion and Pike explores the darkness of the human heart in a unhinged performance that you can’t look away from. Showing us that some people will do anything to get to the top by any means and Pike nails it right on the head with what I think is truly one of her best performances.

J Blakeson : J gives great direction here! He takes the style of Fincher’s Gone Girl and doubles down on it. It’s not a rip off but their are definitely similarities with it’s fine for sure. He takes on elder abuse and that subject is shown very honestly theirs nothing this film shows that takes that subject and glamorizes it. As he is able to present this emotionally disconnected person who’ll do anything to win and we explore the mind of that psychologically while still entertaining the audience with this nail biting drama thriller. As what I loved very much about his approach to the story was its shock value as he kept on showing these twists and turns that you never expected the story to go and he constantly kept the audience guessing. Which I thought was great and he’ll slowly start expanding the story with new characters that never felt forced but felt genuine and once were introduced to new characters he fleshes those characters out to so we get a proper understanding of their motives. It’s dramatic, unsettling and engaging all the while he gets great performances from his cast in a truly well directed film by J Blakeson.
