Movie Review : The War With Grandpa

The War With Grandpa
This film was heartwarming, hilarious and so much fun! Robert De Niro gives a fun and emotional performance you can’t help but fall in love with. This film when Upon its release of its trailer got a lot of criticism for being too comedic or to childish now I’ll say this year  2020 has been a incredibly dark and grim year. So when I heard a comedy starring Robert De Niro was coming out I was excited because it’s what we all need right now is to laugh and have a fun time and that’s exactly what this film did. It was able to give a fun laugh out loud story with a great amount of emotional heart and depth.

Firstly, It’s not just your average family film as the film explores really deep themes that moved me. As yes the film has The laugh out loud humour you’d expect and it delivers on that front but it also brings a amount of emotion I didn’t expect from this film. As it discusses themes of aging yes in a fun way but also in a very real way that comes across as deep and it does this the whole film as it also tackles themes of family and unity and enjoying time with the ones you love. And it has a perfect balance of deep thought provoking tones that will touch your soul but also fun laugh out loud moments.

Secondly, The performances by everyone involved is fantastic! Robert De Niro gives such a fun leading performance you can’t help but get swept up in as it walks the fine line between so serious it’s hilarious to actually deep emotional depth and he brings both qualities to the performance that really makes you enjoy it as a comedic performance with fantastic humour but with a great hint of emotion that’ll have you in tears. Christopher Walken also gives a fantastic fun supporting turn and he chews up every scene he’s in with his fantastic onscreen delivery and amazing charisma. Everyone else involved all give strong performances but it’s the leading performance by De Niro who steals the show with his hilarious and touching performance that’ll have you smiling all the way through.

Lastly, The War With Grandpa is a fantastic family film that brings such depth that you can’t help but enjoy every frame of this film. It provides the laughs and fun times you’d expect while also teaching valuable lessons that will touch you and warm your heart. Led by a truly fantastic performance by Robert De Niro that will have you smiling all the way through. The War With Grandpa is a film that the whole family will enjoy while also teaching you valuable deep lessons along the way I recommend everyone go check this film out.

This film centres around a grandson who’s forced to give his grandpa his room and declares war with him in order to get his room back

Rated PG : for rude humour, language, and some thematic elements

Robert De Niro : De Niro delivers a fun performance with so much heart and surprising depth in this family comedy. Robert De Niro plays a grandfather who’s still quietly grieving over the loss of his wife while trying to let it not get to him. On top of the deep layers of that he also is trying to connect with his grandson and he does it by waging this war with him over his room and the way Robert De Niro approaches the role is fantastic. You can see how much fun he’s having with this role as you can always tell his pure enjoyment he has by doing these fun comedic performances and here he brings that charisma and charm you can’t look away from. What’s so fantastic about how he delivers his comedic beats through this film is that he plays the role absolutely straight and doesn’t crack what’s funny about the performance is how dead serious he takes this war with his grandson. It’s pure childish antics but it’s the amazing dead serious approach to the character that makes it even funnier then if he was to ham it up and make it purposely comedic. He had this great delivery of his dialogue and fantastic comedic timing that didn’t make it seem like forced humour but was so natural and resulted in fantastic laughs. He knew exactly was the right moment to make a joke and when to pull back for a more emotional and subtle moment. He walks the fine line of fantastic comedic humour and great depth of emotions as their are a decent amount of moments where their is emotional moments where he has to go to Some very raw places and it works greatly because he gives the best amount of both tones. Robert De Niro gives a truly fun performance full of humour that will have you in stitches from laughter but he also will tug at your heartstrings with some incredibly effective emotional depth and heart overall another truly great performance by Mr Robert De Niro

Tim Hill : Hill directs probably his finest film yet! Tim Hill is a filmmaker I am very familiar with as I’ve seen a lot of his past work. He’s known for doing family friendly films like Hop, Alvin And The Chipmunks and Max Keeble’s Big Move just to name a few. Now I’m not saying I don’t like those films but they definitely are mediocre or enjoyable films with not a lot of depth to them not saying their not enjoyable but their just not exactly films I would go run out to buy. That being said I really did enjoy what he brought with War With Grandpa because it’s definitely his most dramatic and well done comedy he’s ever put to film as I mentioned it’s not a straight forward comedy. Their are actual moments of great emotional depth that will touch your heart and make even make you tear up and I love how he tackled this story so well. Their were a few problems I had with the supporting characters being a bit underdeveloped besides that the film was a good time. He was able to keep the light hearted tone while giving great big scale laughs but then also toning it down so the audience doesn’t get exhausted from to much of the comedy and he shifts it into a more serious tone constantly. It was the right approach to take because then it shows that the film has great depth inside of this one sided comedy and I love that he was able to get great performances from his entire cast. While also making a fun film for the family everyone can enjoy while giving a strong emotional message to walk away with. Tim Hill did a great job at bringing this enjoyable story to the screen solid direction by Tim Hill
