Movie Review : The Gentlemen
The Gentlemen
This film is such great fun! Guy Ritchie gives his best film in years with this truly fantastic crime film. Yes he’s mostly known for his crime comedy films like Snatch and has gone on to do some truly solid films like The Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes films which are great fun but it’s his style on the crime comedy genre he has that is so compelling to watch. As the film is packed with an all star cast from Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell, Henry Golding and Hugh Grant the entire cast give such energetic performances that get you invested into them the moment they appear onscreen. This film is hilarious, violent and a great twist ending as well it’s one
of Guy Ritchie’s best films that he’s ever crafted.
Firstly, This film has a greatly written screenplay by Guy Ritchie who is able to bring this snappy and fast paced very natural way of speaking to the dialogue he crafted for his characters. As it never felt like it was just trying to be cool for the sake of it but had great layers to the script and it’s dialogue as it’s ability to smartly and write the dialogue differently for each character to suit their own individual and unique personality was perfect. As each actor would deliver their dialogue differently even if it was said in a different voice or accent by the actor the way it was written for that character was perfect as it would perfectly describe that character so well through its well thought out dialogue that could be funny at times but then at the drop of a hat be totally serious and that’s a great strength it has.
Secondly, The films cast is brilliant! Now I’ve spoke earlier about the fantastic cast that is brought to the screen on this film and as everyone contributed greatly to the film with their fantastic energetic performances the standout of the film to me was Hugh Grant. Hugh delivers a performance that is unlike anything I’ve seen he approaches the role in a very humorous but also deadly scary character that works so effectively through the film. When I first saw the trailer and heard Hugh and saw him I was blown away that he was playing a role that’s such a departure from what we are used to seeing him play and I love that though as it was so different but what an outstanding performance from Hugh. Everyone else like McConaughey and Hunnam and Colin Firth all give fantastic performances That you can’t help fall in love with instantly as they give each character a fantastic style that makes them so unique and intriguing but it’s Hughs performance that is the scene stealer of the cast.
Lastly, The Gentlemen is Guy Ritchies Best film In years returning to his roots of the crime genre. He delivers an explosive narrative with colourful characters that ooze energy and charisma with a screenplay that is so well layered in comedy and drama with the sprinkles of the crime style brought to it makes it a fun film to watch that you’ll want to rewatch right after it’s done it’s acted greatly by its entire cast and a career best performance from Hugh Grant this is a film I couldn’t stop smiling watching its violent it’s funny it’s a brilliantly written film this is the Gentleman. I recommend everyone go check this film out.
When a cunning man who’s drug empire that he wants to sell off everyone fights to get a piece of it.
Rated R : for violence, language throughout, sexual references and drug content
Hugh Grant : Hugh delivers a career best performance in this film! Hugh is one of the most popular and iconic leading actors of the romantic comedy genre. When you think Hugh Grant you think Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Noting Hill. He has really embraced the fact he has been doing romantic comedies for a good portion of his career and the films people recognize him from are from that genre. Now that being said when I saw the trailer of this film and saw Hugh Grant in a crime Guy Ritchie film I was surprised not that I didn’t think Hugh couldn’t achieve portraying a character in a crime film but that it is a role we have never seen Hugh portray before. He plays this sleazy criminal that will do anything to cover his ass and Hugh’s approach to the character was outstanding as from his appearance alone you don’t even recognize its Grant at first glance. I had to look hard and I was amazed it was Hugh not only did it not sound like him it didn’t look like him either which shows how great the makeup was and his ability to just slip into this character and become totally unrecognizable. He has then on top of that this cockney accent he uses to disguise his own and it worked so well for the character perfectly as at times it sounded very familiar to Micheal Caine’s voice. He really committed one hundred and ten percent to this character as from the voice and his appearance it doesn’t sound and look like Hugh it seems like someone else entirely which shows how brilliant he was able to totally disappear into the character onscreen. This guy he plays is not a good guy he’s a terrible person but what Hugh brought to him that made him so compelling was the charm. Hugh always brings charm to his characters but here he brings that charm in a menacing way that was so effective and so brilliantly done as he’s totally having such joy of telling this story to Charlie’s character and at the same time he’s very deadly of someone you don’t want to cross and Hugh also contributes this sense of intimidation into the character that is shown in such subtle ways as they way he has this sheer darkness in his eyes but you can see he gets such you from striking fear into people in such a playful way he goes about it. Hugh has a fantastically layered character with such depth and emotional complexity as he can be dangerously playful
And then show people why they do not cross him and he brings the charm and great darkness to the character in such a genuine and authentic way that you just can’t take your eyes off of. His performance is electric and I would love to see him in more roles like this because he truly delivers a career best performance that is the scene stealing performance of the film.
Guy Ritchie : Guy comes back to his crime film roots and soars greatly. Guy is always so self aware of what he wants the films style to be presented onscreen as sure we all love the film Snatch which is very snappy dialogue and is also a crime film but what makes those so memorable is the ability that he injects the film with great layers of comedy without it coming off as to jokey but always is aware of when to switch up the tone even in the same scene that may come off funny could switch to serious within a moments notice and that’s brilliant. As Guy walks the fine line between comedy and drama mixed in with the beautiful cocktail of crime in the mix that explodes on the screen in such brilliance and he brings that same brilliant thought process to this film. When you see the violence it could be played for a laugh or for dramatic effect or both and that’s a great thing he does is he loves to have fun with what he’s crafting with his style and that’s what he Brings here once again. Their is some scenes of utter violence that will make a knot in your stomach and some other scenes of violence may be played for a humorous effect and it works so brilliantly. As the story at hand and the way he captured the characters personalities makes for such a fun time and it’s a fantastic written script by Guy but equally as brilliant is his direction on this film too.
