Movie Review : The Meg
The Meg
This film is dumb Fun! The Meg is a fun summer popcorn flick starring Jason Statham and its man vs shark it's such a silly premies but I'll say this this film is exactly what I thought it was it met my expectations but it didn't exceed my expectations but it also didn't lower then. It has great moments of fantastic humour, amazing nail biting Suspense with a fantastic great climatic sequence towards the final act of the film.
First Off, This film is such a blast to watch for the reason that it dose not take itself to seriously it knows it Is a cheesy overblown plot and it knows that which is why on a lot of levels this film works for me it is very self aware of its cheesiness and works of it to give a great fun time. That being said this film is half great and the other half is a bit weak I will explain. For the first half of the film it is sheer fun and suspense with great set up and action thrown at you. It gives great build up to suspenseful scenes and well timed jump scares that work very effectively. It has great big moments with the Shark and all its wrath. All the stuff with the Shark is what I came in to see but the characters I didn’t and that leads me into my problems with this film. When the Shark is not onscreen that is when I get bored not to say the characters suck it is just they deliver so many side plots that were not needed or had any importance to its bigger picture at hand.
As you are aware I never give spoilers but I will say this film has a Romance side plot that felt very forced and not at all relevant to the story at hand it just came off as awkward. Most of the characters are incredibly forgettable as well and that is a issue the film has which is in the beginning you think all these characters are going to just be Shark Bait but then by the last half of the film they try and get you invested into the characters and really care for them but their wasn’t enough substance and backstory for me to care. adding to that they also really tried to drive home serious emotional elements with the characters which I just didn’t buy into since this film is supposed to be this cheesy Shark film I came to see that not an emotional Shark film which this film dose try to do. It try to make you cry over these characters with emotional moments and it was not needed whatsoever.
My last and final problem with this film was The lack of Shark Moments, yes their is a great amount of action with the Menacing Shark their absolutely is but I felt that the film dose spend a lot of time with these characters that we will not remember once the film is over. We came for the huge spectacle and we got it for sure I just felt like we could of gotten a lot more by trading in some of the character moments for more action sequences as that would of payed off more greatly.
Overall, This film is a Blast to watch if you want to have dumb fun and see Jason Statham fight off a shark you will enjoy this film for sure as I did. Just don’t go into the film expecting the best Shark film of the year it has its faults for sure it dose but it’s the great big cheesy fun that comes along with it that is worth the watch. This film for me is a half good half bad and that isn’t a awful thing I definitely would see it again as it gave me what I wanted a Shark with a big bite.
Rated PG - 13 : Action/peril, bloody images and some language
This film centres around a Great big Shark called The Megaldon that can and will kill anything in its Path but when a man named Jonas comes up to the task to take it on and stop it, will he succeed or just be the next one in line to become shark bait?
Jason Statham : This man gives a fun performance! Jason is one of those action stars that no matter what he is in he always seems to be the best part of that film. And here he again gives the audience a good time with a fun filled sarcastic performance. Jason plays the every man and relishes in the character onscreen. first off he always plays these tough rugged characters and thats why he was for me a perfect fit for this character. He brings this great charming and witty Quality that is so much damn fun to watch onscreen. He dose not take the source material seriously but has great fun with it but at the same time dose show quite a bit of emotion but never overdose it. Once he is onscreen you know your going to have fun he has you laughing and also invested into his character due to the Loveling quality he bring to it. He just delivers a solid Performance that isn’t too jokey or to serious but he knows exactly what he signed up for which is cheesy fun so that is the kind of performance he gives which is perfect with the style of the film. He is just a fun action star to watch who has great comedic timing great emotional range that he shows throughout and just a terrific onscreen presence that you can’t help but enjoy. Jason delivers once again another great onscreen performance that you will have a absolute blast watching.
Jon Turteltaub : Jon Gives a good directed picture! I am aware of this directors styles of filmmaking after seeing his work on both National Treasure films I knew exactly what I was walking into with him on the helm of this film. He gives a enjoyable take on the Shark film genre giving the audience what they wanted he gives the great big spectacle but also has amazing timing for the tense moments in the film. He knew how to build up a scene and get the audience aware when a jump scare would happen but would build and build and then not execute but then deliver it right when you least expect it and I loved that quality he brought to it. But he also makes the film stumble a bit due to the overdone character arcs that truly were not needed and could leave the audience myself included craving for more action instead of character moments. He gives you a fun popcorn flick with the action but not without its fair share of problems though. He has a fun cast as well at the centre at it and never takes the source material to seriously but has great fun with it and thats why part of the reason I enjoyed it was that he just had fun with it which I appreciate. Overall he gives a decent job at direction with some issues that could of been fixed but as an overall picture he did a pretty good job with this film.
