Movie Review : The Equalizer 2
This film was better then its predecessor but still has its fair share of plot holes. This film was an explosive enjoyable follow up to the 2014 film. First off the positives for this film the highlight and best part of the film is Denzel Washington. No matter what film that man is in Denzel always gives his best and always is the best part of the film which he dose again greatly here. He relishes in the character giving it this really intimidating approach to it while also having this dry sense of charm to it that just works.
Now the negatives, this film can really seem repetitive after the first 30 minutes because he is essentially just repeating the same tasks over and over again rather then having a more narrow and structured plot it comes off as repetitive. What also bugged me was the antagonist of the film didn’t really work for me I felt like it was a weak choice and didn’t really create a shocking revel. The villain was kind of bland and didn’t bring any sense of danger to the screen which is the whole point of a villain it’s like they say a hero is only as good as it’s villain.
on top of the weak plot and villain this is my biggest flaw was it just felt boring. The plot’s pace went really slow and this film clocks in at 2h and you really feel that runtime. The film could of easily of trimmed 15 minutes off of it and it wouldn’t of made a difference. The film just didn’t go anywhere it was repetitive and didn’t really have a strong plot to keep it all together which resulted in it being a mess. I have a rule never bore me with a film which this film did but Denzel dose carry this film and if it wasn’t for him I would of hated this film altogether. This film calls in the category of sequels that just went needed. Overall this film is better then the first but due to Denzel’s performance it is worth checking out.
This film centres around a man who takes the law into his own hands when tragedy strikes among his friend and will make the people pay that made her suffer.
Rated R : for brutal violence throughout, language and some drug content
Denzel Washington : Denzel makes the most of what he’s given as makes it work. Denzel is one of the few last truly magnetic actors out their. He always brings his A game and always delivers nothing but his best which he dose once again here. He brings this charm to all of his roles that just is great and he dose here he has this stylish wit to him but also grimly intimidating. He walks that line so well and he delivers his dialogue in a crackling sensation. He really shines in the film giving his all on every scene and stealing the film with his great work. Denzel as we are aware plays a man who makes this right and gives justice and brings pain to people who deserve it and the way he captures this character onscreen is outstanding he does it in such a quiet and subtle way and his style on the character just works. He is so charismatic and brings great life to this really weak film. He as always is the highlight of the film and once again dominates the film with his great onscreen presence.
Antoine Fuqua : Fuqa what happened?! This man is responsible for giving Denzel his second Oscar what has happened to that quality of film which he used to give. I know he has a very specific style of filmmaking which is gritty violent films and for the first time dose his first ever sequel and dose it work? Yes and no he delivers on the violence that’s for sure but it’s more style over substance which is why it falls so flat. He knows how to make the world around his engaging but when it comes to story he just was not able to keep a solid plot in place it felt very messy and it just felt like a let down from this great director who is capable of great filmmaking I’ve seen it. Maybe this is a sign that sequels for him just doesn’t work and that’s ok we don’t always need sequels to every film sometimes their not needed and this one was one of them that wasn’t needed. He has a great performance from Denzel but surrounds the film with these supporting characters that you don’t care for and will not even remember after it’s over. The film suffers from him more focused on the action aspect then the actual quality of the film and its plot. The film was an overlong violent film that left me unsatisfied and disappointed in This great director. To me this is his weakest film and just didn’t deliver what I wanted this film to be his direction was not great it wasn’t good it was just disappointing.
