Movie Review : Tomb Raider (2018)
Tomb Raider (2018)
This film is enjoyable but not as enjoyable as I wanted it to be. This film for the first half of the film was the best part of the film giving great set up for the centre of the story. The only problem was when we got to the main part of the story it was very underwhelming and the pacing takes a nose dive and really slows down in its tracks from the thrilling action for more smaller moments. It’s fine if it wants to take a moment or two for a small moment but it slowed down the action for a good chunk of the film then kicks back into high gear during the last act of the film.
The film had all the right ingredients for a terrific video game adaptation. It had great set up a great lead for the character it’s just the other half of the film that sells the film short and sadly misses the terrier but came so close to a perfect video game adaptation of this beloved character.
I don’t want you guys to think I hate the film I did find it enjoyable their were parts I liked. Without getting into spoiler territory the film has this terrific plane sequence and some incredibly well core phrase fight sequences that i liked. And just seeing Laura back onscreen brought to life by the always talented Alicia Vikander becoming to me the best part of this film by bringing such life to this character. And Walter Goggins giving a great performance as the antagonist of the film giving great menace in role and having such fun in the role.
Tomb Raider overall is one of the best video game adaptations period but also has its fair share of flaws that are quite noticeable but overall gives you an enjoyable time with a fantastic character and a great amount of fun as well.
Rated PG- 13 : For sequences of violence, and action as well as some language
This film centres around Laura Croft who’s father has been missing for 7 years and so when the presume him dead and are dealing with his will she visits his house and finds some clues to something she didn’t expect to come her way.
Alicia Vikander : Alicia dominates this role perfectly. This actress is one of the best and most hard working in Hollywood with an Oscar winning performance in The Danish Girl a few years back she has shown she can act and steal the show as she dose so again here. Alicia relishes in the role bringing great energy and life to the character giving great amounts of humour and serious moments as well. She brings her own style to the character and doesn’t copy Jolie’s portrayal of the character she created her own version of the character and I’d have to say she is the best actress to of played this role. She has this great emotional depth she brings to it that is so compelling and great emotion as well as an intensity that is just spot on with the character and also showcasing her great acting abilities too. She was fully committed to every frame of this film giving great psychical action as well she is the best part of this film and she delivers on all levels. Whatever role she takes she takes head on and even as Laura she brought 100 percent of pure emotion to her making it feel as real and authentic as possible her complex character was perfect for Alicia because she explore so much of her in the film it was fantastic to watch onscreen. She can make you smirk, cry and grip your seat she’s incredible no doubt about it and is the best Laura ever seen or portrayed on film overall an outstanding performance and a great portrayal of this character.
Roar Uthaung : Roar gives a mixed bag in his direction on this film. This director I am unfamiliar with so I am just judging him based of his work on this film. He gives ok direction that could of been better and I’ll explain why. In the film like I said earlier lacked the action and had more smaller moments the issue is he didn’t know how to balance them out he showed great moments of action and emotional scenes but couldn’t balance them so one always was lacking or overpowering the other and resulted in a disappointment. As well he could of made the film longer as it clocks in at 2h and 2m sure that may seem long but since he had to establish the character and set it up by the time we get to the main meat of the story it’s already half over so I felt it could of benefited from being longer because it felt rushed at times. Lastly it felt he could of been better with his pacing and overall balancing of the tones shown in the film that could of resulted in a more stronger film but fell short at times overall the direction he gives is fine but could of been better.
