Movie Review : I, Tonya

I, Tonya
This is an outstanding film! This movie hits on all levels with great comedy mixed well with the drama and emotion which exploded onscreen perfectly. It did what could of resulted terribly but worked brilliantly which was forth wall breaking. Their are parts where they talk to the audience and it worked so well and they did it in a way that didn’t feel forced or to constant.

Also the performances from everyone in the film is tremendous Robbie giving a sparkling portrayal of Tonya and then Alison giving a dazzling portrayal of the mother and surprisingly Sebastian Stan was captivating as well I thought he was great. I’m so surprised no one is talking about his work here.

Lastly the film didn’t feel like it was glamorizing or just playing Tonya as if she was the terrible person the press made her out to be. The film shows both sides to the story without it being biased and I admire the truth shown onscreen with the great execution of direction and the great performances at hand here I, Tonya is one of the years best!

Rated R : for pervasive language, violence, and some sexual content/nudity

This film tells the story of Tonya Harding from her beginnings to the infamous incident that occurred in the 90's

Margot Robbie : Robbie delivers a authentic and real portrayal of the infamous Tonya Harding in this film! She could of easily of played this figure as if she was a terrible person and she also could of played her untruthfully. She doesn’t though she portrays her for who she was and is a person with a passion. She shows many layers of herself in the film character and performance wise that will make you laugh cry and feel for her. Robbie was able to give great lengths of comedic elements throughout her work as Tonya without it overstating the subject matter. She shines in this film their are so many great scenes that steal the scene but theirs one in specific that is very simple Robbie was able to execute. Which was her putting makeup on and as she’s applying it she’s crying but tries to fight though the tears and a scene that’s so small and simple she turns into this heartbreaking scene. She not only brings great amounts of emotion but her ability to fully immerse herself in her character was amazing to witness. She looks so much like Tonya and just captured her perfectly onscreen. She easily gives one of the best performances I’ve seen of the year overall captivating the audience in her very real and authentic performance as Tonya which she knocks out of the park.

Allison Janney : Alison is electric in this film purely electric! Allison plays the mother of Tonya and isn’t in it as much as I thought but when she’s onscreen damn she dominates the screen with her phenomenal performance given in this film. She plays a very mean and brutal mother and the way she brings that to the screen is nothing short of brilliance. The moment she comes onscreen you can’t help but be amazed by what she’s giving onscreen. She brought her dialogue to life giving it such passion and life to it she was so menacing and Brutal when she expressed herself emotionally onscreen. As well as her transformation was incredible the makeup and prosthetic used on her was brilliant she truly disappears into her performance giving one of her best pieces of work. Overall Allison captures the screen in an electric supporting performance.

Sebastian Stan : Stan was shockingly brilliant in this film. He as many people know is the winter soldier but he totally breaks down that image in this film and gives a great performance that is getting overlooked and I don’t know why. In the film he plays the husband of Tonya and portrays him onscreen so real and honest your shocked but as well amazed at the same time at what he’s giving to his role. He showcases sides to him that he’s never shown before that just amazed me. Their are parts where he’s laughing and in love but then could be brutal and so mean and full of anger and passion that steals the scene by his great depth shown to his character. He develops performance and character wise throughout the entire film and just delivers brilliant work here. He as well really gets in the bones of the character to the point where you don’t see him but the character which was brilliant. Overall Stan delivers a knockout supporting turn in this film that shouldn’t be ignored.

Craig Gillespie : Craig gives solid direction on this film! Craig did tremendous work on this project and I’ll tell you why. He intertwined the comedy with the drama and not to much that the drama overshadowed the more serious elements of the story but it being balanced out perfectly and really mixing well together. As well as his execution of the subject matter he didn’t make her out to be this big monster but he also didn’t ignore the more darker moments either. What he did was show the most real and accurate portrayal of Tonya as possible. He shows her from her tough beginnings leading up to the incident everyone knows. He did it in a way that wasn’t biased but rather captured her in her best times and worst times showing many great lengths of emotion throughout. Also he did great work getting great work from his cast. He brought a style and his trademark to the film that just worked and couldn’t of done as good if he didn’t helm the film.  His ability to be honest and show the people for who they were and not sugarcoat anything but give the most real depiction of them is what makes his direction stand out. Overall Craig gives the most authentic portrait of Tonya with great direction that no one else could of done.

The Lighting : The film had this feel to it that was very grained and it worked so well. The film takes place in the 80’s and 90’s and the way the lighting was able to shift and change to capture the look of the times was perfect. From the look of the frame it made me feel as I was back in that time. It was great use of colours throughout the film great work guys.
