Movie Review : The Shallows

The Shallows
This film was thrilling ride from start to finish. This film is being called the best shark film since saws and I agree it is. Reason how it is because it has a compelling story gorgeous location and backdrop for the film along with a fantastic lead and scares that will get you to grip your seat. This film is one of the best films I've seen all year it exceed my expectations.

Nancy goes to Mexico to find herself and is and has a deep love for the waters so she decides to go surfing but she isn't the only one in the water

Rated PG -13: for bloody images, intense sequences of peril and brief strong language

Blake Lively : Blake delivers one of her finest performances of her career! Blake is well known on the small screen for her show gossip girl. She has appeared in some small films such as the green lantern, and her breakout role in sisterhood of the traveling pants. Along with her dramatic turn in 2015's Age of Adaline. So we have a  bit of a taste of her dramatic grounds. In this film she comes full force with her dramatic abilities in this survival thriller. She isn't given much dialogue since she's alone for the most of the film. She has one particular scene where without giving to much away she just breaks down in tears and just the terrified feeling that she could die from the shark is in her tone of voice and face and you can feel it and it's chilling. She makes you invested in her character and performance. Like I said her emotional impact she shows In the film is a sight to see very well shown for her acting range. She's just so thrilling onscreen she was the perfect choice for this film overall a fantastic performance from Blake.

Jaume Collet - Serra : Jaume delivers outstanding direction in this thrilling motion picture! The director of this film has done work in films I have seen such as Non - stop the 2014 action film. So I have a bit of a sense of what his directing style is like and it is very intense putting the characters in tough situations and he dose so again with the shallows. In this film he gives us a thrilling tale with some scares while still being invested in the story and characters presented to us onscreen. He dose not loose your attention he gives you your money's worth and entertains the audience with a fantastic shark thriller. What he did that stands out is he created a simple storyline worked off that and then created scary elements around it wrapped with characters you care about. Which in shark films you don't get much of anymore and he was able to deliver that on every scale. Overall fantastic direction by Jaume once again.

The Lighting : the mixture of colours in this film blew me away. When I saw the trailer   for this film a while back I was so astonished just in the trailer  from the tones used in the lighting. I thought it was very vibrant and colourful and really made the frame pop out and bring a layer of intensity to the picture. It is very colourful throughout the film but then it is not afraid to go dark. Then it has this greyish tone to the picture and it plays off the emotion to which worked overall amazing choices for the tones in the film great job guys.

The Cinematography : The camera work on this film felt like a JJ Abrahams film. Why I say that is because that director has shaky cam to his films which make to you feel in the middle of the action which is what this cinematographer reminded me of. He was able to choose angles and shoot from different areas and scopes to capture the perfect frame to express that scene perfectly and make you feel in the middle of the action on the edge of your seat which he dose brilliantly. Overall loved the camera work great job.

The Score : The score for this film was fantastic reminded me so much of John Williams captivating masterpiece in the cinematic milestone  Jaws. This film reminded me of that score it did what Williams did which is right when the shark is about to attack the music escalates and gets louder and louder. It could of turned out terribly for the similarity to Williams score but it didn't it was able to use his as an inspiration and make the score their own and they did so it captured the intensity and the thrills of the film perfectly a well done score loved it.
