Movie Review : The Departed

The Departed
This is one of the best drama films and one of the best films of all time! From the excellent direction by Scorsese  to The astonishing performance from an A - list cast such as Matt Damon,  Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson , Mark Wahlberg. This film shows us why we love Scorsese's films and his way to entertain you with great storytelling. This film is a  thrilling ride from start to finish.

It tells the story of Billy  a Police Officer in the department who goes undercover to disguise himself as one of the mob to retrieve information from the Mob to bring back to the FBI. Meanwhile theirs a mole in the FBI who is bringing back information to the Mob. Who will get caught?

Rated R : For strong brutal violence, pervasive Language, Some sexual content and Drug Material

Leonardo DiCaprio : Gives the best performance of his career! DiCaprio raised the bar once again showing in this film his brilliant acting and emotional range. He delivers good performance after good performance and in this film he delivers a excellent performance way above fantastic. The emotional drive his character had is I'm doing my job it's hard I just want to finish this case alive. The way he portrayed those emotions onscreen was absolutely fantastic and so convincing. When he was angry or sad or scared you believed he was he just slipped himself in the skin of this character and fully inhabited the characters emotions the way he walks all of it. Their was a electricity to his performance  and that when he was onscreen you couldn't take your eyes off him he was so engaging and entertaining. This  performance he gives us shows us he's a talented actor and he dedicates himself to the craft of acting. When he was onscreen with his co-stars in a scene like Matt Damon for example the acting just seemed so natural and real the connection the stars of the film showed onscreen was magical.  He was nominated for a Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award (Screen Actors Guild Award). BuT he received no nomination for his performance in this film when the Oscar nominations were announced. This is in my opinion the number one snub in all of Academy Award history and will never forget and forgive the Academy for their massive mistake. He was Nominated for Blood Diamond another great performance no doubt but I think his performance in the Departed was ten times better. They nominated him for the wrong movie when it should of been for the Departed. Overall he gave one of the best performances I have ever seen! Great job Leo.

Matt Damon : He delivered the best performance of his career! Matt Damon has acted in some really terrific films such as the Bourne franchise, Good Will Hunting and many more. But none of those performances match  to the entertaining performance he shows in this film. His characters motive is I'm trying to get information from the Police force without being noticed I can't trust anybody.
And the way he shows that onscreen was great. When he's angry or frustrated you believe him the dialogue he's delivering is so sharp and very well written. He became this character he eat slept and breathed this character when he was emotional it wasn't like he was acting it felt like he was using his own feelings in this role he put a bit of himself in this character  which makes for a more convincing and entertaining performance. He definitely deserved Oscar recognition for Best Supporting Actor Overall loved his performance.

Jack Nicholson : Gave another fantastic performance once again! Nicholson a legendary actor appearing in films such as Chinatown, The Shining and many more. He's already given his performance thats what he shows in this film he plays a mob boss and the way his character  carries himself in the film is terrifying but yet so intriguing. What he brought to the character is you don't know who he's going to choose to put in the ground and say next. The way Nicholson delivers it so well making it look effortless. When he was onscreen you couldn't take your eyes off him he sprinkles his Nicholson charm all over this character and theirs a electricity when he walks in a scene. You know he's going to leave you entertained which is what he dose overall loved his performance.

Mark Wahlberg : Mark delivers one of the best supporting performances I have ever seen! I have seen some of Marks past work but none of those performances compare to the outstanding performance he gives in this film. When he's on screen his character captivates you with strong language and harsh comments but you can't take your eyes off him. I forgot it was Wahlberg because he just became that character the way he looked and talked he just gave 100% of himself to this role. It was absolutely fantastic Oscar worth performance overall loved it!

Martin Scorsese : Theirs no one who could direct this film only Scorsese could  pull of this film! Scorsese Scorsese is a legend around Hollywood known for some of the most iconic films in cinema history. GoodFellas, Casino, Raging Bull and so many more. He stamps his trademark on this film bringing Violence, sex and language to the film. Basically what Scorsese is known for bringing to all of his films but what makes the film unique and different from the rest of his films is the way the film was executed and done. In this film He show both sides of the story making it separate then it would collide as one big plot. Mixed with phenomenal performances from his cast. He knows how to grab the audiences attention and he dose it in this film he shows a very intriguing story with interesting characters. It's never boring when you watch a Scorsese film you know your going to be entertained. I'm glad he won the Oscar for best director he rightly earned it because this film is a masterpiece and he's the own who painted the wonderful colours all over this film. Overall he did a brilliant job as always.

The Lighting : Very modern looking loved it! This fit the frame and tone of the film perfectly it wasn't to bright or dark it just described the structure of the film perfectly. Overall great job guys.

The Cinematography : Some worth mentioning shots! Theirs a scene when DiCaprio is following Damon's character and the camera stays with DiCaprio then Damon pulls a weapon out. They use The camera angles to create suspense and gorgeous shots to set up the sequence and was executed excellently. Overall great job guys.

The Soundtrack : The music in this film was very well chosen songs like Shipping Up To Boston. Some really great tunes that fit the story and the moment perfectly. It also gets you singing a bit definitely worth downloading on iTunes.
