Movie Review : Whiplash
Whiplash
This film is a triumph! This film shows outstanding filmmaking. With powerhouse performances from Miles&Simmons. This film is a near perfect film.
A young and upcoming Drummer studies at one of the top jazz schools in the world. But when he's assigned to a new class with a abusive and intense teacher he's pushed to the edge to achieve perfection.
Rated R : Strong language, Some sexual references
Miles Teller : Miles gave a extraordinary performance! I have seen some of Miles past work. Such as Divergent and That Awkward Moment. So when I heard about this film I thought he was just going to give a average performance. Was I ever wrong he blew me away with his acting&emotional range. He gave such a intense performance with his great emotion. His character was basically I want to be remembered as one of the greats so in order for that to happen I need to work hard. The way Miles expressed those emotions onscreen was brilliant. When he was mad, angry or sad you believe him you believe the suffering and pain he's dealing with. Not many young actors can do that anymore only really talent actors can. The chemistry he had onscreen with Simmons was flawless their acting vibes just came off each other when they were in a scene together. Miles delivers a Oscar worthy performance. Overall absolutely loved his performance
J.K. Simmons : Simmons gives the best supporting performance of the century! I have seen a few of Simmons films before but none of them matched up to this standard of excellence. The emotion that his character shows is quite dark it's I don't just want a fantastic job I'm striving to see perfection. The way Simmons expressed that onscreen was so disturbing and dark that you can't take your eyes off him when he's onscreen. He could of easily just given a average performance of this interesting character but Simmons soared beyond that he put himself in the skin of the character and became the character fully. He ate and slept this character. If he doesn't win the Oscar for his performance in this film I have lost all faith in the Academy Awards. Overall Loved Simmons Performance.
Damien Chazelle : Damien is a forced to be reckoned with! Before I saw this film I didn't even hear about Damien after seeing this film I will watch all of his future projects. He showed perfect filmmaking. He had great actors play these wonderful characters, he got powerhouse performances from his actors everything fell into place perfectly. He places you in the eyes of Miles character and gets you to feel and expire nice what he's going through which was brilliantly done. He deserved a Oscar nomination for best director he did a fantastic job. Overall Damien your a genius.
The Lighting : The lighting choices for this film was brilliantly chosen! It had this warm colour to the picture when Miles was performing at the school it felt very rich. Then when he's at home it would be more greyer and more modern looking. I took it that it could of been used as a metaphor when he's onstage on the drums he feels like he can do anything. Then when he's on the streets he feels that spark gone. The lighting to express that was very well done great job guys.
The Cinematography : Some breathtaking moments! When the band is playing the camera would pan to the different instruments playing so you can see up close of all of them playing. It was very well shot got you to be in the moment and feel like you were their watching Simmons conduct his band. Overall loved it great job guys.
The Score : The Music was a slice of perfection! The drumming and different use of instruments in this film was so brilliantly done. When you see Miles on the drums and hear the music he expresses from the drums is beautiful music. Defiantly worth. Downloading on iTunes. The music was a masterpiece.
