Movie Review : Twister (2024)
Twister (2024)
This is one of the most fun and enjoyable popcorn films of the year! Now I have to admit I was very hesitant on this film when I first saw the trailer I thought that first teaser seemed very corny and had the film really seem like a cash grab in order to make money off the popularity of the big hit that was the original 90’s film. Now I love being proven wrong when a film is either terribly marketed and ends up being a total hit which in this case the film was. As when I saw the second trailer for the film it had a better look to it and was far better edited compared to the first look that we got to it. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the film I think it is a fantastic summer hit that many will turn on yearly as it packs great amounts of action, Glenn Powell proves again he is a leading man that is taking the industry by storm and it also updates the look of the Twister brand with great CGI to give the tornados a truly terrifying and pulse pounding look to them. Twister (2024) is a truly fun film that is one of the reasons people love going to the movies it has charm, thrills, a bit of romance and just a enjoyable film everyone will have fun with.
Firstly, the plot of the film is solid as it isn’t just about them chasing tornadoes yes that is a massive part of the film but it isn’t the only primary focus of the film. It also has themes of dealing with ones pain and feeling of failing at something and trying to live with the burden of that, it also brings the whole aspect of storm chasing into such a modern take on how it would be done today compared to how it was tackled 25-30 years ago. For instance their is a character that is a streamer that has this larger then life media personality that uses this over the top colourful personality to draw people into his show by capturing twisters in a really eye opening way. That I think as some may call ridiculous really works for this film as in todays age of technology so many people would do it to gain popularity online now he isn’t just some larger then life internet personality he also has depth to him. The film then really does not shy away from the science and nuts and bolts of what makes a tornado they really educate the audience on the details of it all which I loved as yes it is a popcorn film but it still is very much going to give you a crash course on how tornadoes are chased by people that do it as a career. It also shows how the feeling of messing something up can burden ones mind as the main character of this film made a critical error in the field that cost people their lives and she feels it is on her and she carries that guilt with her for a very long time. So it also is able to dig deep into the characters and have them overcome personal hurdles that have emotionally kept them in a place of pain for so long. The film is able to also then deliver some truly incredible action sequences the sound mixing and visual effects in this film are amazing as it captures the sheer panic of storm chasing and also how dangerous and destructive a twister can be and they set up the sequences in ways that constantly top the previous one. What I also liked is that it does not force romantic plot points in the film what I mean is their are so many national disaster films that their is usually a forced romantic interest between the two leads and their is definitely chemistry between Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar - Jones and that chemistry is very present but it never indulges itself to cheesy territory their is no big kiss or lustful scene between the two. Which I think was such a smart move as then if it did happen it would be just like any other forced romance in other action/ national disaster films but having that spark and connection very present but they never act on it I think was a better direction for the characters. Overall the film delivers with the great action, emotion and fantastic set of characters that surround this film and Twister delivers on each level amazingly well.
Secondly, The performances in the film are so good! Now the two performances everyone will be talking about is Daisy Edgar - Jones and Glen Powell. Daisy taps into this fun witty but also damaged aspect of the character to execute who she is. Now she is the lead of the film and she does a damn good choice at showcasing her talent as one of the co leads of the film. Then theirs Glen Powell who in my opinion walks away with the film in terms of performance as he brings so much charisma and intrigue to the character he takes on in the film. He plays this cocky, confident, colourful personality that soaks up all the energy in every scene he’s In and you can see Powell truly channel his movie star power in a way that he hasn’t before. You can see him evolving over the more projects he does as he gives leading man status and this film gives him the great opportunity to finally show that. The rest of the cast is great but I would have to say Glen Powell walks away with this film in terms of the performance at hand.
Lastly, Twisters (2024) is one of the most fun popcorn films that I have seen this year! It delivers a great breath of fresh air to the Twister name that never felt like a gash grab but built upon the original in a way that in my opinion surpasses the original which rarely happens. It brings great visuals that make the twisters terrifying and great pulse pounding sequences that has you on edge the whole time while being anchored by great performances from Daisy Edger - Jones and Glen Powell giving solid performances and the film also gives us amazing characters that you’ll fall in love within minutes and want to see much more of them after the film is done. Twister focuses on giving people a thrill ride with fantastic fleshed out characters that also then perfectly balances drama and eye popping visuals that results in such a fun time Twister is truly a blast that will have you smiling the entire time i recommend everyone go see this film.
After a experiment goes wrong on trying to catch a storm many years later her friend brings her back into the filed she fell in love with hoping to spark that passion out of her again while meeting new and interesting people along the way
Rated PG - 13 : Intense Action and Peril|Injury Images|Some Language
Glen Powell : Powell delivers such a strong leading performance that is dripping in charisma! Now Powell has had small supporting roles in films like Everybody Wants some, Top Gun : Maverick but it’s nice to see he finally is getting top billing status as he is so deserving of it. Here he finally gets the full chance to show himself anchor a big budget popcorn flick and he does an excellent job at it. He knew exactly what was needed in order to draw people into his character and what qualities to bring to make him truly stand out. He plays this larger than life guy that comes into the film with a fantastic introduction and once he appears onscreen you can’t take your eyes off of him. When we first see him he seems like this cocky guy who has it all figured out and does storm chasing for fame but not for the passion of it which is what Glenn Powell makes the audience believe within the first 20 minutes of meeting his character but as the film progresses he shows the audience theirs more to him then what’s on the surface and he actually is very passionate about twisters and storm chasing. His character goes on a incredible arc where we find our so much about him and that he is a team player that wants to learn from his friends about what he can do to better his brand but just become more educated on the career he has been in love with since he was small. Now the personality type that Glen Powell plays in this film has been done do many times but what makes his stand out is that he isn’t one dimensional he is able to bring so Many different sides of him out and show that this guy has quite a lot of depth actually. He is quite a smart guy and shows the reason he is so successful and has a huge following is due to his sheer unapologetic and original approach to showcasing his love of twisters. To many he may come off rude or over the top but that is all showmanship in order to bring the audience in as when it digs deeper he is a very normal guy who just likes making human connections with others. In the quieter moments he feels the need to have to prove to his completion that he is someone with a heart he isn’t just a pretty face but he has a heart and has a kind soul. Their are many attempts he makes with Daisy Edger - Jones’s character to show her their is more to him then the impression she has made up in her mind and he wants to show her that everyone can get along it dose not have to be a constant race of who gets the better coverage. Glen Powell is able to show both sides of that coin amazingly well as he can channel that high confidence sprinkled with a wild card like way of doing things that make him suck all the energy out of the room and have all everyone watching him Then he can simmer down and show his heart and how he Is just like the rest of them and is a real nerd about the science aspect of it all he has a playground of things he gets to use in terms of showing this character onscreen. He knew exactly what this character was and knocked it out of the park he is dripping in charm and energy and that smile and twinkle in his eye that hooks you in. He truly has come into his own showing that movie star quality that makes him leading man status that is a force to be reckoned with onscreen as he just relishes in this role and gives charm, wit, heart and so much fun as this huge personality that has fun wherever he goes but also shows such a emotional side to him he never just goes surface level he goes so much deeper which is why this character isn’t a throw away character and you’ll remember his character and performance long after the film is over. glen Powell does a fantastic Job giving one amazingly entertaining performance in this film.
Lee Isaac Chung : Lee directed this film greatly! Now this filmmaker is known for smaller indie dramas he hasn’t done a big studio film like this before so making the leap from smaller scale films to a massive remake like this is no easy task to do for any filmmaker. He made the transition really well as he made this film a remake worth telling it never felt like it was made for just profit you can see the passion put into the film and it is a film for the audience as this is designed to be a popcorn film everyone can get behind and he delivers with that on every level. As since the technology has advanced since the first twister film was made back in the 90’s you can go back to revisit this world and show it in a way where the action sequences can be way more realistic and make the tornados truly terrifying looking which it did now what he does real well is yes he is able to show those big moments of action on a large scale in such a fun and thrilling way but he never let it be just a flashy film with no heart at it’s centre. As what people take away from this film is its fun and well written characters that are thrust into the danger and when you have characters that are fun, exciting and intriguing the plot will fall into place as then you have the audience already into your film due to its characters and not just the leads but each character from the main roles to the supporting cast everyone made a great impression onscreen and really had a moment to shine. This is why I always say character work is important as if you don’t have a good set of characters and strong narrative your film will fall apart and this film gives great characters and a great story so that is why the film I think is a massive hit. We have seen so many national disaster film’s but what can this film give people that makes this film worth checking out it focuses on its character work first and then the big spectacle look which worked in the long run as it was able to not just show hollow out stereotype characters that are easily put in films of this nature it was strongly written roles that made audiences remember them long after the film was over and even want to see them again and that’s how you approach a big budget film like this you can’t go into it thinking the big flashy aspects are going to be enough to keep a audience entertained. It balances both the characters and story extremely well as it also is able to get into the science of Tornados and you can tell the writers did their research so it made sense and had a sense of grounded realism to the frame. Lee was able to show the emotional beats of trauma and how it affects someone when they feel that what happened to them was their fault and how they carry that burden with them and how it can affect not just their relationships with other people but also make it hard on them to just do day to day things without their anxiety flaring up. He brings really strong themes in the this massive production which I loved it he didn’t just wanna repeat the same beats of the first film sure their are a few things he tips his had to in terms of the original but he wants to make his own spin on the story and I love that it never felt like a rinse and repeat of what he have seen before which made for a much more thrilling and fun time with the film. He is able to bring that action packed popcorn feel to the frame but come from a place that is realistic and keeps it’s feet on the ground without it ever feeling over the top and also channeling great emotional aspects for the characters and it’s story giving the audience something to walk away with on a deeper level that they picked up on while still having great time. Lee Isaac delivers emotion and thrills together and results in truly a great time to be had with this film he was the perfect person to bring this film to the big screen and I cannot wait to see what he does next.
