Movie Review : Novocaine

Novocaine

This film is a freaking blast from start to finish! If Companion was the film that finally showed Jack Quaid as a leading man this film cemented him as a legitimate action star! Novocaine is a high octane pulse pounding film that will keep you locked in all the way to the end if its from its explosively nail biting well choreographed fight sequences or the crackling great screen presence of Jack Quaid. Novocaine is a film I can see myself revisiting multiple times over as it is a thrill of a ride that just keeps improving on itself with each single set piece and Jack Quaid front and centre is so damn good this film is a freaking blast to be had.

Firstly, This film comes out off the hells of Jack Quaid’s first big hit of the year Companion and now is branching out to new territory with his take on the action star quality he has yet to show audiences. The film is wild as it is about a guy that cannot feel pain so it isn’t trying to be in the realm of cartoony action but at the same time their is a element of over the top action at times but while staying grounded in a sense. As the film explains to the audience why he is incapable of feeling pain and how it is a disability for him in ways that makes him tough to enjoy some of the finer things in life and he enjoys his job but pretty much keeps to himself. The film starts with a bank heist scene then goes into a car chase and multiple hand to hand combat scenes and eye popping action that will have you on edge the whole way. The film presents the story in a great way that it builds upon its previous action set pieces to top the last one. I admire that about the film it just gets more and more wild as it progresses but always keeps it fun and refreshing without it feeling tiring or repetitive. The film is also in many ways a love story as he starts to let someone into his life after many years of keeping to himself and the moment he does she gets taken hostage when a bank robbery hits his place of work and will stop at nothing to get her back and make sure she is okay. Now the film isn’t just a rescue film it is also hilarious with great amounts of comedy that arise out of the serious elements mostly it is from the action set pieces as the big bold action is played seriously but has a comedic flare to it that landed each time. The film keeps the tone at a even keel as it never dips into too serious territory but at the same time knew when to poke fun at itself in many ways it is very self aware of what it is and that makes it that all more enjoyable. It is able to be a film of self awareness for people that can’t feel psychical pain but shown under the microscope of over the top circumstances while also giving love story elements and showing Jack Quaid as an action star. The sheer style and way the story is tackled was greatly presented by all the creative people involved on this as it is yes a action film but also explores more themes then just then inside of the genre to give a enjoyable layered action film that will have you smiling the entire way through.

Secondly, The performance by Jack Quaid is so freaking fun! Now he has been on quite the year with the hit Thriller horror film Companion and now this he is having quite a solid year and I am so happy for him as he deserves all the success coming his way as he has shown in an incredible way that he soars as leading man material. He plays this guy who keeps very much to himself and the moment he strays out of his normal day to day schedule someone he cares about gets taken and he will stop at nothing to get her back and its done in a way that shows audiences his ability to yes be comedic in fantastically timed moments but also a true action star. We Jack Quaid commits himself to the action and comedy in a way that will have you smiling from ear to ear he is truly so good in this film he truly shines as Novocaine. The film has a good cast but if I am being totally hones it is Jack Quaid who steals the show in terms of performance.

Lastly, Novocaine is one of the most fun films I have seen this year so far it is filled with pulse pounding action sequences that are so well presented and written. They constantly one up the previous sequence and in a way that is both shocking and fun all the while getting a truly great performance from Jack Quaid at the centre of it with great comedic wit and action star caliber. Novocaine I can see myself revisiting multiple times for the sheer fun of what the film provides Novocaine is a blast from start to finish I recommended everyone go see this film its such fun ride.

This film centres around a guy who has a condition where he cannot feel pain and when he falls head over heels for someone at his work who gets taken during a robbery he will stop at nothing to get her back

Jack Quaid : Jack Quaid soars in this film! Now we saw a darker side of him in this year’s Companion which really explored places of his heart we had yet to see him tap into. With now the audience seeing a border range of his acting abilities one he has not had the chance to present is his ability to be an action hero as a lead role which he tackles greatly with his performance in this film. We have seen him do comedy roles and using comedy in serious like situations in his lead role in the Boys but we haven’t seen him take that part of comedy and apply it to an action setting especially where he is getting top billing. Seeing him take hit after hit and deliver hard hitting punches was refreshing as he was able to walk the fine line between comedy and action in a way that made both work in his favour as he is great at the comedy aspect that os already known as we have seen it time and time again but we haven’t seen him be the tough guy in an action setting before. He plays this close to the chest guy that stays within his schedule he knows and does not stray out of it but when he realizes how repetitive it is and he isn’t really living the life he wants and mixes it up for a change someone he starts to care for gets put in a dangerous situation. Seeing him act and get to do stunt work and really get into the nitty gritty action was fun to watch as you can tell Jack is having a blast getting to do the most he can in terms of stonework himself and also show more aspects to his acting range we haven’t seen explored before. He plays this charming and likeable guy who you want to see succeed and just come out on top so you’re constantly rooting for him the entire way through. You can see he is socially awkward and does not know how to flirt with a girl as he does not do it often and Jack sells that adorable awkwardness through his facial movements and the way he stutters or overthinks something before acting on what would best benefit him. He is by no means your stereotypical action hero he is a lanky skinny guy that works at a bank and has never been in life threatening situations that requires him to be violent towards someone else so when we see him act and have to chase someone in a car or deliver a punch he does it in a stumbling not knowing what he is doing way that comes off charming but also funny in the best way possible. As the humour comes out of the seriousness of the situation it is never forced comedy you can tell Jack is well aware of what will land for a joke and what won’t and his timing is fantastic. Leaning into the action aspect you can see he committed himself entirely to it as their are aspects where he has to throw his entire body into a sequence and you can tell he was totally game for whatever they threw at him Jack is able to show that tender aspect of this socially awkward human that is aching to come out of his shell but also can redefine the norm of what an action star is with his take on this character he is both hilarious and thrilling as this fantastic role. He is able to also say so much with his eyes without having to say much dialogue and I hope to see him take more roles like this where he is able to combine his great talents of comedy and then introduce something new like psychical action where he has yet to go into which he knocks clear out of the park he does a exceptional job at brining this lovable character to the screen that results in becoming a brand new action star. Jack Quaid Soars in what I think is one of his most fun performances he has put to screen.

Dan Berk & Robert Olson : These two filmmakers really have made a great first impression on their big debut in terms of mainstream filmmaking. Now I have not seen anything these two had done prior to their film Novocaine and it seems they only had experience in small budget horror films which makes a lot of sense with how well the violence and blood looked in this film due to their experience on films that have lots of it within the horror genre. This is their first big movie in terms of budget and star image as Jack Quaid is no small time actor he has made a huge name for himself more and more in the last couple years and launching him as now an action star is only going to get him to even bigger heights. Seeing these two scrappy, young and hungry filmmakers wanting to make a mark with a big scale action film like this is truly inspiring. As they had never taken on a film of this magnitude before and they were able to incorporate both action and comedy in a way that really makes the film so damn fun to watch. As we have seen multiple search and rescue films of this type of movie before in an action setting but is all in the execution that matters most and they attached a great writer who also only really had experience in the horror landscape to pen the script for this and they collaborated in bringing their words to life with crackling action sequences that are both funny but also keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. It Never goes into a realm of this would never happen like the Furious franchise has now basically has turned into an art form in many ways. The film’s action may seem funny and at times cartoony but I would say its more slapstick comedy mixed with intense fight choreography and they walk that fine line all due to the great sharp writing sure but also the way in which both filmmakers were able to steer this film in terms of style and tone. It isn’t a straight forward comedy or action film it operates as both and also builds great character work for Jack Quaid’s character so we as the audience care for him and are invested into him before the crazy antics start they spend a great amount of time making us invested into him and this girl he seems to care for before setting us on this wild ride. Dan Berk and Robert Olson crafted a thrill ride that put sharp writing and great well thought out action sequences as pivotal creative moves before just giving cool style to the film they knew that audiences had seen multiple films like this but because they took the material and did it in a way that seemed refreshing and unique really keeps the audience engaged and wanting to know how this film ends as it never fell into the place of being predictable. Overall they crafted a film that is so thrilling and fun and I cannot wait to see what these two do next as they made a truly great first impression and I will for sure be keeping an eye out on their stuff moving forward.
