Movie Review : Drop
Drop
This film feels like an old fashioned Hitchcockian film that grabs you and does not let go until the final frame and is one of the smartest thrillers/ horror films to come out this year! Now this is another film by the great Christopher Landon who brought such hits as the Happy Death Day films Freaky and penned the script for Heart Eyes. I think he is one of the most gifted horror writers of the last 15 years that has not got the praise he deserves as now with his latest film Drop he utilizes the single space setting the story takes in and is able to thrill and scare you effectively in a way that you don’t expect and also have the story go places where you thought you had it figured out but it goes somewhere entirely different which I love it is never what you expect in terms of how it ends it keeps you guessing to the very end. Meghann Fahy delivers a sensational leading performances where she crackles in a genre that feels showcases her great acting range in a terrific way. Drop is another great Christopher Landon film that is destined to become a classic.
Firstly, Christopher Landon has crafted a well constructed film that builds upon itself over time! Now I cannot mention enough how much of a fan I am of Christopher’s work as he came on the scene almost a decade ago with that first Happy Death Day film and made a worthy follow up then gave us a fun slasher once again pairing Vince Vaughn into the horror genre with Freaky and then earlier this year penned what will no doubt become a new valentines Day classic with Heart Eyes. Drop I think is the strongest narratively we have seen him explore characters and story within the horror genre and it showcases his greatest strengths. This film is the most style wise pulled back film here the way he captures the sheer tension and horrors of the situation is through creative and well thought out ways that lock in the viewer in a way that has been done rarely within this type of film. The film makes you think you have all the pieces sorted out within the first few minutes due to how some of these films have felt predictable with this type of narrative but it smartly is always one step ahead of the viewer and goes places that you never thought it would go. Christopher Landon crafts a script that is so well thought out and layered with such depth and twists you will be rewatching it over and over seeing what you missed the first time I think this is his strongest writing wise he has ever been. The Style is great to but that is secondary as he focuses primarily on how strong the story is and how well written the lead is so as the audience we are wanting to see her prevail and come out of this thing Alive while still giving obstacles and challenges that come in her way that keep the audience on edge the whole way through. The sheer way this was executed was done in such a thrilling and brilliantly shown way of giving effective scares that never felt cheap or overdone he is able to scare the audience in a way that catches them totally off guard in really inventive ways. Overall the way the story is done in such a different approach then what we are used to seeing Christopher Landon approach the horror genre is one of the strongest parts of the film along with the way he incorporates his style without it feeling like something we had seen before.
Secondly, The central performance from Meghann Fahy is terrific! Now Meghann’s work I am not familiar with but she soars as the terrified mother wanting to just have a nice time on a date she set up with a guy who seems like he has good intentions. Now She has so much go wrong on this date and she goes through so many emotions through such a short amount of time and she is incredibly frantic and she sells that anxiety really well giving a performance that keeps you glued to her and hoping her situation turns out for the best. Considering this actress hasn’t really had much leading roles this is her first time making a big impression in terms of performance as she is the top billing name and she shows greatly that she is someone that deserves leading status roles as she is tremendous in this film. Now the other actors are all good but if I am being honest she is the heart of this film in terms of acting and she does a tremendous job at it too.
Lastly, Drop is in my opinion Christopher Landon’s best work as of yet! It has many twists and turns you don’t see coming the performance from Meghann Fahy is solid and a star making role within the genre. It has a great showcase on a type of film many would write off as overdone but is able to access it in a way that feels fresh and new which I love and it is not a blood and gore film it actually is Christopher Landon’s least bloody film he has captured and he tires something different making a film that is in the vein of a horror thriller. Not many people have seen this film due to the small word of mouth around it which is a shame as I think it is a great time to be had with this and it most defiantly will get lost in the shuffle of all the films coming out right now but this is one to check out I think Drop is one of the most enjoyable Thrillers I have seen so far this year and Christopher Landon’s finest work as a writer and director it is a fantastic film that I think will find its audience eventually. I do recommend people check out this gem of a film as it deserves all the great praise and if given the chance I think people will enjoy the thrill ride it takes you on.
The film centres on a woman who is finally ready to get back out on the dating scene and when she is on the date and realizes that someone is threatening her on her phone sending her random threats she finds that she is in a tense situation of trying to find out who is sending these

Meghann Fahy : Meghann gives a terrific performance as the lead in Drop! Now again aside from this film I am not familiar with the prior work of Fahy now I have seen her in small parts like Miss Sloane but not much. She has mostly been given the role of supporting characters this is really the first time she has been given a leading star part which i think has been a great opportunity for her as she shows great strength in leading material from the result I saw of watching her in this film. Now she did a tremendous job at showing the sheer anxiety filling her up as the night goes on. The film starts with her already anxious if it is the right move to go on this date as she is very much attached to her son and hates leaving him alone but since he is with a sitter she feels better as it is someone safe trusts but still she is still on edge to the point she feels the constant need to check her phone every 5 minutes to see if he is ok. Now she knows she is on a date and does not want to be rude but at the same time her child comes first and thinks by maybe explaining the reasoning of why she is overly attentive to her son he will be as understanding and no think that she is just on her phone the whole time. As the night goes on she notices these weird messages coming on her phone at what first feels like a stupid prank escalates to full on life threatening things and she cannot reveal the messages on her phone to her date or else her son dies which creates a whole heightened sense of fear in her more then ever now. As her sense of security of being safe is at risk but more than that is her child she goes into full protective mode and does whatever she has to to make sure her kid and he are okay. So we see the dial of panic wash over her face and slowly go up more and more over the course of the film her behaviour to the Waiter and her date is very frantic and anxiety riddled but she cannot explain why she is acting that way if she wants to stay alive. Meghann Fahy is able to greatly show the sheer terror of what terrible situation she is in and communicate so much through her body language and the shakiness of her tone to the fear in her eyes of what is going on around her without being able to verbally communicate her concerns to her date. She has a very traumatizing past in regards to men and we see that explored as well but the way Meghann does not fall into the trappings of being a damsel in distress but instead shows the inner workings of a deeply Hurt woman just trying to start fresh in her life but the events that roll out that night prevent her from doing that so she puts her body into full defensive mode and she is able to showcase a strong minded woman that will stop at nothing to make sure her child and herself is safe without compromising anyone else’s lives. As the night goes on the threats from the random messenger gets to go way past the line and the person sending these messages tries to corrupt her morally by asking her to do things that she would have to live with deep regret doing in order to keep her son alive but she finds ways to always be a step ahead without having to hurt anyone else. Meghann Fahy gives a performance that is among one of the strongest within the horror genre I have seen this year as she is not as I mentioned a damsel in distress she is given an amazing backstory that explains her pain but does not let it define her and due to that pain she is Able to use the experiences in toxic relationships to be ahead of someone trying to easily scare her and or intimidate her. It is a solid turn from Fahy that will have you rooting for her the whole time I hope she does more within this genre as she shows to be an incredible talent within the horror community and I also am so excited to see her get more leading roles she is magnificent!
Christopher Landon : Landon delivers his finest work of his career so far with his work on Drop! Now as previously mentioned I have been a fan of Landon’s work since seeing Happy Death Day back in 2017 and I have been following his career ever since then and I am glad I have as he has shown time and time again he is a great talent at delivering fun slashers that aren’t paint by the number films of something we have seen before but instead are inventive films that have sharp writing at the core of them with lovable characters. Now again what I cannot stop mentioning is his ability to craft this amazing story all before the great style that is wrapped around it. As the film follows a deeply traumatized woman from her last relationship going out to see if she can enjoy herself but things go south when she starts receiving random drops on her phone from a stranger at her date. The film is able to use modern technology and well done writing to great a great sense of fear and anxiety with the audience and then have the film slowly dial up with the dangers she faces as the night progresses. We do not see who is behind it until the last I wanna say 15 minutes of the film which made for a exciting mystery thriller that constantly kept you guessing and on top of that the sheer layers he went to in order to not reveal the villain early was so smartly done. As he has done this one other time with the writing being a whodunit with the first happy death day but the difference here is the film takes place in this single location and he takes full advantage of the space the story occupies itself in. Landon does not report to cheap gimmicks with the scares it is more psychological this time around as since she has a painful past she is more on edge then the average person and so when she gets threatened and her child is put in harms way is like reopening a old wound her fight and flight responses kick in and we see her go to desperate messages to be ahead of whoever is trying to terrify her. He never comprises the style over character work as I would say this is the most compelling character with such depth we have got from any of his films as she is an abuse survivor and we see just how hard it is for her to step out of her comfort zone. He also gets a hell of a strong performance from his lead and is able to effectively scare the audience and keep them thoroughly entertained without knowing how the film ends to early but show twists and turns they don’t see coming to make this one of the most effective thrillers of the year and honestly one of Christopher Landon’s strongest films he has ever put to page and screen. Drop is his commentary on Trauma, using modern technology to get great thrills and scares to his audience and also using a single location to tell his story which he has never done before. Drop is Christopher Landon at his most strong creativly we have seen him so far.
