Movie Review : The Beekeeper
The Beekeeper
This is a fun film and I am surprised how much I enjoyed it honestly! Now Jason Statham does so many action films and some of them are ok but every now and then their is one that just sticks out like Spy, Snatch The Meg even now when the trailer came out for this film I had a feeling this would be a over the top action flick with a very straightforward narrative. Which is exactly what it is the film is not trying to complicate itself by being bogged down in a ton of side plots it is a film about a man seeking vengeance who is also a beekeeper but that name is also code for something deeper so its a fantastic play on words. It has hard hitting action with a ton of pun like lines that work the word bee into the screenwriting in a very fun tongue and cheek way the film knows exactly what it is and dose not try to be something it isn’t which is one of the strengths of it. I had blast with this film and it’s definitely a film I would rewatch for sure.
Firstly, The narrative is very much a recycled concept that we have seen many times over that is the only down side to the film is that it falls into the trappings of what many other films have done before it. The film is very unoriginal in that sense but I wouldn’t call it lazy it is just the star of this film is definitely keeping the film afloat in many ways as the concept of the beekeepers is a very cool concept but the way its executed we have seen many times. As films like Jason Bourne, John Wick I can go on and on have done this blueprint before and the only thing different is the name of the organization that Jason’s character works for as he comes out of retirement to seek vengeance for someone who was unfairly treated. Then the blood bath commences now it plays into the tropes knowing fully aware this has been done better in other films that is what I can’t knock it for. The film relishes in the big high octane action sequences with the cheesy dialogue and explosive third act it actually has a great underlying message to not take advantage of seniors and a man who will stop at nothing to right the wrongs of those that have preyed on the vulnerable. Now that is really all the narrative is a story about vengeance and pissing off the wrong person and what he will do to make sure someone learns their lesson. Its done in a very blunt and violent way sure but you expect that going into a Jason Statham action film the narrative isn’t exactly original in its overall look of it but you can’t enjoy it for what it is.
Secondly, This film has one star that everyone is watching and thats Jason Statham and he crackles with that action star quality. Now we see him very much having a quiet life or trying to that is and you can see he means well and wants to just live a normal well adjusted life now when that quiet life gets disrupted he must act. The way he plays the role was among one of his most recent memorable roles for sure as he is able to bring that tough man quality but you can see a tenderness and sensitivity to him that melds well into the character we are watching onscreen. Now theirs other great actors in the film from Jeramy Irons to Josh Hutcherson the film does have solid actors giving good performances but it’s the leading star that captures everyone’s attention.
Lastly, The Beekeeper is a film that is not the most original concept but you’ll have fun with it as I did the film is a fast paced action flick with fantastic action set pieces great fight choreography. It is what I think is one of Jason’s more memorable action films in recent years as it has a great plot fantastic fight scenes and a terrific leading performance from him it isn’t going to win any big awards but it is a lot of fun and a film people will enjoy watching over and over. The Beekeeper is a fun time to be had I recommend everyone to see this film.
The film centres around a man who is a beekeeper when he finds out a woman he knows has become a victim to a online fraud he gets involved and the people who messed with his friend have no idea what happens when they messed with the beekeeper
Rated R : Pervasive Language|Drug Use|Some Sexual References|Strong Violence Throughout
Jason Statham : Jason delivers a solid performance that is so fun to watch! Now he plays a man who really Is doing the best he can to have a normal quiet life making honey and being a good neighbour. Now what is so good about the performance Jason gives as this character is unlike a lot of the roles he plays specifically in the action films their very much rouge and tough guys that show little to no mercy on the guys he is beating down on. Now you can see that the man he plays in this film hates resorting to violence and is hesitant on using it but will if it is called for which is interesting for Jason as he’s never played a character like this before. As he is very skilled at using his hands or any sort of object as a weapon but he would rather just resort the situation by other means if he could. As he wants not just carnage and to go on a rampage killing people he has a certain goal in mind and that is taking down the people who are preying on the vulnerable. It is very much a white knight approach he takes on and sure it is very bloody in that message he is trying to make but you can see his heart is in the right place. He wants to take down the whole operation that is responsible for the tragedy that fell upon his friend. Jason you can see in his eyes he just is fed up of seeing innocent people be take for granted and he wants to step in and correct the people who need a lesson. He brings that star making quality we love from him that makes it impossible to look away from. He also is able to show his more vulnerable side and show he is doing this for the right reasons and you can see the twinkle in his eye and the sadness in his heart that he has to do this but it has to be done. It very much gives equalizer vibes to his approach to the character as it’s both tender but also a total badass at the same time and he walks that fine line between both exploring both sides to it. Jason is able to bring the action star to the front of the screen but also show sides to him that is more emotionally open which was great as we rarely get to see that from him and when he does show his heart and its a fantastic performance. He gives a solid performance that is fun, emotional and also surprisingly heartfelt.
David Ayer : This man did a good job with this film and that’s coming from me who is constantly back and forth with this filmmaker. He is very much like Ridley Scott for me what I mean by that is both filmmakers are never consistent with their quality of films as this man gave us Bright which was a bleak fantasy cop film which I actually enjoyed then the horrible suicide squad even though I think their was a ton of studio interference that didn’t let his vision be fully realized. Then he made End Of Watch which as it stands is his most critically acclaimed film he has ever done. So yes he is all over the place but here he has crafted a fun film where Jason Statham is kicking peoples ass as a beekeeper who wouldn’t want to see that. he dose not take it to seriously and knows what approach is best to take for the material he is working with as its a simple revenge plot where a man is set to correct the ones that wronged his friend. Now as stated earlier we have seen this before so what matters is what he brings to the table in how we get to the final act as the audience we have seen this film’s premise before what matters is how to keep the eyes entertained for something that may seem similar. He Is able to craft a well done action film that has great action set pieces that truly are brutal and jam dropping while also showing a message to not screw over the middle class which is the big tone of the film and that is kind of it David didn’t complicate the narrative in a bunch of themes. He kept it simple and made a fun popcorn flick and honesty coming from a filmmaker who had a stab at the comic world and didn’t stick the landing with that due to overcomplicating the story I think he best suits action flicks that is where he is the best at and that point is proven greatly by how well he did this film. Overall David Ayer did a decent Job directing this enjoyable action thrill ride.
