Movie Review : The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent
The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent
This is one of the best comedies of the year with truly one of the most fun performances I have ever seen from the man the myth the legend Nicolas Cage. Firstly you have Nicolas Cage giving the most fun self aware performance of his life and delivers on everything ranging from Comedy to drama and so much more in between he gives such a fun performance. It is stuffed to the brim With constant references to his films over the years and this movie isn’t a straight comedy or a straight action film it even packs good drama too it has all 3 and walks that line beautifully. The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent is truly one of the funniest and most fun films I have ever seen.
Firstly, Now this film is meta humour at its finest because the only film I could compare to this to is the 2013 raunchy comedy This Is The End which had all the people in that film play heightened versions of themselves now that film was about the world ending and was truly the first and only film I had seen until now where actors were playing versions of themselves onscreen. This is very different in its approach though to self awareness as This Is The End was very sharply done no doubt its a hilarious film in its own right but what the direction this film takes is truly something special for the actor at the centre of it Nicolas Cage. The film is able to be a love letter to the career of Nicolas Cage without it seeming to corny its execution of discussing the famous roles he has played over the years. As there are constant references to his films like Face Off, The Croods, Con - Air, Gone In Sixty Seconds and even National Treasure. Now with all those references to his works could of got annoying fast but it didn’t they were able to find the right tone for this film where all those references and Easter eggs to some of his most celebrated works didn’t come off as to much or annoying but it was stitched into the story in such a great way that you have to applaud them for being able to pull it off so effortlessly. Then added to that there is a truly heartwarming and even emotional aspect to the story as I mentioned earlier this is all about the works of Nicolas Cage and the impact he has had on the world of film. The film hits you with a punch in the heart of sheer emotion of how Nicolas Cage has always been on the silver screen delivering fun and at times wild performances but we love watching him and this film is a fantastic celebration of his career and its done in such a gozo style way which is brilliant.
Secondly, The performances in this film is so entertaining! Nicolas Cage gives such a hilarious and engaging performance that you can’t help but smile all the time through when watching what he’s giving onscreen. He plays such a heightened version of who he is and it isn’t just comedic his performance he is able to bring some real depth to this version of himself onscreen in such a fun and complex way. Then you have Pedro Pascal who is perfectly cast as this mega fan of Nicolas Cage and now he easily could of played this role in a way of just pure comedy and over the top fanboy but he doesn’t he brings such heart and a loveable quality to him that makes you invest in his character within moments of meeting him. While we see him evolve over the course of the film and his layers shed Pedro Pascal steps up to the task and does a phenomenal job at being not just perfect with his comedic timing but also having a good bit of dramatic moments that he is able to execute greatly without it being to much that it compromises the comedy. Then you have two actors who I consider to be some of the best comedic actors working today in this film in very minor roles you have Ike Barinholtz and Tiffany Haddish who deliver such fun performances that sadly aren’t as bigger as i had thought they would be but for the screen time they do have they both are explosively funny and never failed to make me laugh. Overall everyone in the cast all gave fantastic performances.
Lastly, The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent is a film I knew I was going to enjoy but it surpassed my expectations and truly blew me away. Not only did it give me that Nicolas Cage performance I was hoping for but all of the fun Easter eggs and references all were so well balanced mixed with a engaging story that had me on the edge of my seat to the last frame of this film. It’s a film I definitely will be seeing again and it’s a fantastic celebration of the career of Nicolas Cage in hilarious and even heartwarming moments that are pulled off beautifully. The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent is one of Nicolas Cage’s best films and one of the best comedy films I’ve seen all year I recommend everyone go see this film.
This film centres around Nicolas Cage at a career low and takes on a massive gig at a super fan of his birthday party and starts bonding with the guy and then finds out he’s a big time drug lord.
Rated R : Violence|Drug Use|Some Sexual References|Language Throughout
Nicolas Cage : Cage delivers a hilarious and Meta performance that is truly amazing to watch unfold onscreen. Now this man is a icon he’s given us some of cinemas most beloved characters and performances from his incredible work in Leaving Las Vegas, Adaptation, Moonstruck, Con Air, Face/Off And so many more he’s truly one of the most striking performers i have ever seen. Now he’s given high caliber performances in recent years with his work in stuff like Joe, Pig and even the now cult classic Mandy and the internet loves praising Nicolas Cage for his range and rage in his films and so this film touches upon Nicolas Cage in terms of his legacy of his career and the sheer impact his films have made on the industry and the public. Now Cage could of played this like Seth Rogan did for his heightened version of himself in the This Is The End. Now Cage doesn’t just go loud and bombastic sure we get moments of that but that’s not his entire performance though he plays this heightened version of himself with such layers and complexity. You see how he really wants to make high caliber films and it’s difficult for him and that sheer face of defeat really weights in on him emotionally and he doesn’t want to just be the father who’s self obsessed with his own filmography but he just wants to be dad and how Cage approaches this version of himself is very vulnerable and very real. As those elements of the story especially the relationship he has with his daughter is especially moving to witness as you can see the sheer love he has for his kid in his eyes and how he wants to do well as a father. Then you have the more bombastic side of him where he trips on Acid and gets into shootouts we get all that fun balls to the wall energy of Nicolas Cage but he never plays into that to heavy where it becomes to much either. As at the core of his take on this version of himself what he is trying to convey is such emotion and love he has for film. As the film starts with him talking about being grateful for being a small part of cinema and by the end of the film he is getting big applause for his work and you can’t help but get teary eyed seeing that as if you’ve been watching Nicolas Cage films since you were young like I have it definitely hit you like a punch of emotion. As Nicolas Cage brings every element possible to this performance you have dramatic layers from him drenched in emotion then you have the comedy part of his performance where he delivers line after line with great comedic timing and then you have the action star quality with the toughness so he culminates it all brilliantly into this one performance and he is able to showcase all of those sides to him while getting you engaged the whole time. You can’t take your eyes off of him the moment he’s onscreen your face instantly has a smile on it as seeing Nicolas Cage do his thing on screen is so fun and here he provides once again another truly great performance of one of the hardest tasks a actor would have to do which is play a version of themselves and Cage dose not disappoint he gives a fun filled performance of comedy, drama and so much more packed into one performance and it’s truly a celebration of the career of Nicolas Cage and he really shines here giving a damn good performance.
Tom Gormican : This man gave us one of the best romantic comedies years ago and I’m glad he’s back! This man did a film many years ago called That Awkward Moment which I thought was a cute little movie which more people should go check out. Now to see him tackle the man the myth the legend Nicolas Cage isn’t easy. As he didn’t make the film a parody or something to ego stroking. He was able to walk the fine line of fan service references to his films and also deliver a touching and thrilling narrative. Now The way this film is brought to life is incredible as it’s all things Nicolas Cage but it also has so much heart as it’s about his family, his legacy the impact he’s made on film and it’s so beautifully constructed in this film. As it is able to go through so many layers as it’s got hard hitting emotion at times and then it can switch it up to include action and then after have great laughs with fantastic comedy that is genuinely funny. It is able to be so many things because the writing of this film was so well done and the directing was fantastic as it’s a film that celebrates the career of Cage while giving this original story with Cage thrown into it and it’s so much fun you can’t look away. He also was able to get such good performances out of his actors and give the audience a freaking blast with this film and this is the best film I’ve ever seen of actors playing heightened versions of themselves ever as this is so smartly written and greatly directed it’s a freaking good time to be had and Tom Gormican did a great job at helming this film.
