Movie Review : The Outfit
The Outfit
This is one of the best films of the year! This thrilling crime drama is one hell of a ride centred with a electrifying performance by Mark Rylance in one of the best onscreen performances of his entire career. Graham Moore has crafted explosive dialogue that pulls you into each person that comes across the screen with such intensity and entertainment added with solid twists and turns you won’t see coming.
Firstly, The way this film is structured narratively is sheer brilliance! As the film feels like a episode of Boardwalk Empire meets Reservoir Dogs and I’ll explain why I make that comparison to both of those works. As the film has the backdrop of a classic 1940’s - 1950’s crime drama with the gangster flare to it without it being jokey or overdone as theirs very few filmmakers that can catch that lightning in the bottle tone when it comes to crime dramas and no other filmmakers except for Coppola and Scorsese can achieve such brilliance in the genre. As since those two have touched the gangster and criminal underworld genre so many filmmakers try to duplicate their style or mirror their films in some way and now the outfit Dose not do that but it’s able to capture the criminal aspect of the story in a truly entertaining and authentic way that doesn’t come across as jokey or over the top but has a very well balanced way in its execution of its style.
Secondly, The performances from the entire cast are incredible! Now you have tons of fantastic actors giving tremendous work in this film from Dylan O’ Brien who hasn’t really explored this kind of crime genre in sometime he was great in American assassin which I think is a overlooked solid performance of his and here he once again gives a very charismatic and also intense at times performance as the son of a famous gangster. He isn’t in the film much but he provides such a depth and energy to the role that is truly enjoyable to watch he’s truly terrific in this film. Then their is Johnny Flynn who I didn’t really know about until this film he gives a sinister knockout performance that will truly amaze you as he has such a darkness to him and he channels it so well in this very complex personality he plays and it’s a solid supporting turn he provides for this film. Then you have the masterful Mark Rylance delivering what I think is a career best performance as he’s given amazing performances over the course of his career but the sheer depth, complexity and layers he showcases from this character is truly outstanding. Everyone is incredible in this film all giving top notch performances but it’s the genius performance of Mark Rylance that will blow you away.
Lastly, The Outfit is a truly incredible crime thriller that showcases a career best performance from Mark Rylance and well structured storytelling. This story unfolds under a single setting and unfolds more and more keeping you on edge with razor sharp dialogue the outfit is a thrilling brilliantly written film that everyone should see.
This film centres around a cutter at a tailor shop who has his life thrown for a loop when one of the local gangsters come into his shop at the dead of night with information about evidence that could start a gang war and he must not let the rival gang get ahold of it or the police if he wants to make it through the night
Rated R : Language Throughout|Some Bloody Violence
Mark Rylance : Rylance delivers his finest performance of his career with his work in the Outfit! Now This fantastic actor first came on my radar back in 2015 with his Oscar winning role in Bridge Of Spies and ever since then I’ve kept up with his work as I think he’s a terrific actor. He also had a fantastic small role in Dunkrik and one of my personal favourites was his turn in the trial of the Chicago 7 which he gave truly one of his best performances. Now why I’ve praising his work in the Outfit as the best work of his career is due to the sheer complexity nature of the character he takes on and how he goes about it with such depth and explores such layers of this person emotionally in a truly outstanding way. As on the surface we see this cutter who is very much kept to himself and enjoys his quiet work environment and everything to be run smoothly and that’s it and when that peace gets disturbed by these underworld figures he has to learn how to adapt best to the situation in order to stay alive. He takes on the challenge of having to manipulate these mobsters and try to pin them against each other by outwitting them with his incredible sense of sharp reverse
psychologically and mental strength and Rylance is able to channel all these layers of the character in such a intriguing and convincing way that draws you in the moment he’s onscreen. He doesn’t like trouble in his store but the way he handles himself when the situation arises is so brilliantly shown onscreen by Mark Rylance. Their are so many layers to who this character is and when we see him he seems like we can figure him out within 5 minutes which isn’t the case as their is such a mystery to who he is and who he was before he became a cutter and the way Rylance keeps the audience on edge with his ability to keep the audience in the dark of who he is and only present a version of himself he wants people to see until he’s ready to shed that layer of himself back if it’s subtle manipulation to desperation, and even brutality as the character has this amazing mental sharpness he needs to survive the night and Rylance packs such a punch with his great work in this film. He has so much to chew on in terms of character depth and he knocks it out of the park by giving a subtle performance that evolves into so many more emotional sides over the course of the film that is so captivating to watch onscreen. He brings his absolute all to this film giving truly what I think is his greatest onscreen performance of his entire career!
Graham Moore : Moore directed this film so brilliantly! This man is responsible for giving us the amazingly well done Imitation Game way way back in 2014. So he’s proven to make a Damn good film but we haven’t seen him tackle the crime genre before and with how he did the Outfit he is a natural in the genre. He doesn’t copy others styles or films of this nature before him but instead gives something original to the genre in a very engaging way and for someone who’s never done a crime film before he did a incredible job at this story. As he created an environment for it to all to take place under one single location and really takes advantage of it in a smartly done way. As he is able to keep you on the edge of your seat not knowing where the characters will go and the film kept surprising me with its well placed thirsts and turns and Graham Moore does a brilliant job at also getting solid performances from his cast including a career best from Mark Rylance all while giving a popcorn fun filled film that will keep you invested in the film if it’s from the story, the characters, the style or simply the great direction at hand. Moore tackles the crime thriller genre greatly in a way that feels authentic and fresh Moore once again knocks it out of the park with his fantastic vision and direction.
