Movie Review : Tick, Tick... BOOM!
Tick, Tick … BOOM!
This is a freaking marvellous film that is brought to such life by Lin - Manuel Miranda in his directional debut! This film tells the story of Jonathan Larson and his struggles of getting his passion project that he’s developed for 8 years off the ground in hopes he’ll make a impact on the world before he is 30. The film is greatly led by a truly relatable and grounded performance by Andrew Garfield that is filled with manic energy and gripping emotion that will tug on your heart strings. This film is full of incredible heart, mind blowing music with a message that will fill your heart up and have you wanting to rewatch it the moment it’s over.
Firstly, this is a film that touches upon some very real themes that will connect the audience to its subject matter very strongly in a powerfully personal way. Now the film yes is about Jonathan Larson and his struggle to finish a musical he’s been developing for 8 years and in the hopes it’ll be a success. Now the musical aspect yeah people can relate to that if your into the arts sure but where the film truly hits home with the audience is the tone the film hits very strongly at which is feeling like your failing or struggling to become what you set out to be before 30 and emotionally battering yourself because you haven’t achieved what you think most people have done by that age or if not younger. So theirs this emotional rawness to the film that people in their early or mid twenties can relate to or even older as everyone I feel goes through that emotional struggle at some point in their life. It’s a very real and raw topic that’s touched upon very strongly in such a mature and realistic depiction you can’t help but be pulled into the story and it’s strong themes it talks about. As not only does it cover emotional struggles about one’s career but also showing how a person may feel left behind career wise when they see their friends getting high paying jobs and moving up in life and you feel your in the same spot you’ve been for the last 5 years and feel that you keep struggling when everyone else’s career is taking off and your just Creatively stuck. The film talks about that internal struggle to make your mark and have that feeling of wanting to make a impact on the small corner of your little world and it’s not preachy or cheesy but incredibly well constructed in a way that will not only connect you to the story but will have you thinking about the lessons the film teaches you about not giving up on your dreams regardless of how long it takes to fulfill them. So the film tone wise is incredibly gripping that touches on very emotional narrative beats of friendships, emotional struggles within your passion and career all the while trying to emotionally keep it all together. Lin Manuel - Miranda drives home very real tones that are naturally discussed and never felt repetitive.
Secondly, the performances in the film are freaking fantastic! You have Andrew Garfield in the starring role of Jonathan Larson giving one of his most memorable onscreen performances of his career filled with emotional depth and complexity and stuffed to the brim with charismatic energy making it a truly enjoyable and gripping performance from him. Then you also get a truly fantastic supporting turn from Robin De Jesus who plays Jonathan Larson’s best friend in a performance that feels very emotionally raw and honest as he is the number one person Jonathan has had in his corner his entire life and Robin De Jesus just gives this very tender but emotionally crackling performance that will bring you to tears. And lastly you have Alexandra Shipp who plays Jonathan Larson’s partner and has the struggle of putting his career before her’s because through the course Of the film she has major career opportunities that would be amazing for her but she sidelines them to put Jonathan first and in the beginning I could kind of understand. But by the second act of the film you can see her crack at him because he’s not acknowledging all of what she’s done for him and she dose not feel like she’s been thanked in any way and it results in a very emotionally sincere and heartbreaking scene. She brought her to great life through a emotionally subtle but incredibly engaging performance. Overall everyone in the film did a phenomenal job with their performances but it’s the performance from Andrew Garfield that will stick with you.
Lastly, Tick, Tick.. Boom! Is a freaking blast in terms of music it’s incredible as well as a narrative too as it doesn’t follow the norms of what a biopic is for telling Jonathan Larson’s life it’s done in a way of music and emotional tenderness filled with the highs and lows of his passion and career but also his personal life too and both are balanced beautifully. It’s effective In showing it’s message about sticking to your dreams while also teaching audiences about who Jonathan Larson is in the process. It’s beautifully told, masterfully acted and brilliantly directed by Lin - Manuel Miranda in his first directed film. Tick, Tick.. Boom! Is a spectacular film and one of the years best films! I recommend everyone go check this film out.
This film centres around Jonathan Larson and his burning passion project he’s been working on for 8 years and hopes to have it not only succeed but make a impact in the world he loves before he turns 30
Rated PG - 13 : Some Suggestive Material|Some Strong Language|Drug References
Andrew Garfield : Garfield puts his heart out on full display and delivers a powerful performance! Garfield has been an actor who I’ve been saying for years is amazing in dramatic roles from films like his criminally underrated work in the Social Network, 99 Homes and Hacksaw Ridge just to name a few. He has always in my opinion excelled in dramatic work more then the blockbuster stuff he’s done in the past as I feel the drama heavy material is where he is strongest in terms of performance. Now here he plays the great late playwright Jonathan Larson who was unique in his terms of songwriting and storytelling for the arts of musical theatre. He plays this incredible person from head to toe in an incredible depiction as Garfield consumes himself into the role from head to toe. As you can hear in his speech the rapid fire way he has of talking to the way his mind is racing a mile a minute to write down a word or sentence for inspiration for a song. The small mannerisms he picked up on really make a big Impact for his performance in such a fantastic way. He is constantly an emotional roller coaster one minute he’s on the high of feeling on top of the world due to getting a show off the ground he’s been developing for so long but then comes the low when he is stuck trying to write a song for the musical that has great importance for if the show will succeeded due to the heavy Importance of the tune. And you can see the sheer emotional hell he puts himself through as he feels ashamed he hasn’t written the song yet or even put a pen to paper. Garfield show’s this emotional nature in such a deep and raw showcase as we see how Jonathan operates emotionally through the course of the film as Garfield shows the emotionally depression he dives down when he feels he’s not doing good enough, and the sheer unapologetic joy of feeling like this will succeed and all work out he’s constantly having this emotional tug and war within himself and Andrew Garfield shows it upfront in such a tender and emotionally expressive way that has you really feel for him and you can’t take your eyes off the screen the entire time as he lights up every scene he’s in. When you hear him ranting or singing about his friends or himself you can feel the weight of the words through every delivery and the sheer impact of every ounce of emotion he brings. He gives what I think is one of his best performances ever as it’s full of such emotional richness and depth and he explores every aspect of who Jonathan Larson was the playwright, the friend, the lover, the son and he knocks it out of the park with such a outstanding performance that will have you engaged into his incredible performance the whole way through Andrew Garfield gives a truly amazing performance with his portrayal of Jonathan Larson.
Lin - Manuel Miranda : For his first directed film this is Damn impressive! Now this guy has shown the world his talent with his incredible writing and storytelling styles that has revolutionized musical theatre with the underrated In The Heights and smash hit Hamilton. Now hearing he’s tackling the task of telling the story of a revolutionary lyricist and writer Jonathan Larson is no easy feat. As he tells the film through the only language he knows through music. He doesn’t do the usual approach of just making it scene after scene of dramatic weight instead he stitches musical numbers and burst of songs to express how Jonathan would feel in that moment all the while of keeping the dramatic scenes as well. He fills expresses the anxiety of what it’s like to feel like your gasping for air creatively and emotionally in your early twenties and trying to make ends meet all the while not giving up your dreams just to be financially stable. As Lin approaches the story of Jonathan Larson in a very emotional way as you see the drive he had the sheer passion and energy the light into his soul of what drove him to want to be into musical theatre and the heartbreak of what it’s like to be creatively stuck all at the same time. He shows the highs and lows of that lifestyle and of Larson in a very real way that feels authentic and not corny or cheesy. He also brings out fantastic performances from his whole cast especially a truly spectacular performance by Andrew Garfield in the title role. Lin - Manuel Miranda brings a smashing great job for his first directed film as he has so much heart in every frame of this film you can see the sheer love he had for the music and for the story he was telling. It’s a beautiful film that’s directed amazingly I cannot wait to see what he directs next as this was some of the best direction I’ve seen all year.
