Movie Review : Greyhound

Greyhound
This film was okay! When I first heard about this film when it hit Apple Plus I was excited as I love seeing Tom Hanks in anything. And the concept of the film seemed incredibly entertaining but after viewing it I will have to say the film is a bit disappointing. Not to say it’s bad in any regard but the film has a good share of flaws that just were incredibly glaring to me. But what saves this movie for me has to be the performance given by Tom Hanks as he’s the focus of this film and wow does he deliver a gripping performance in what is a mediocre film at best.

Firstly, I’ll talk about the positives the performance from Tom Hanks is fantastic as he delivers this emotionally subtle performance that isn’t flashy but he brings this emotional impact to the screen that is so smartly done and Hanks gives a emotionally subtle performance that will have you locked into his performance the entire film. The film also has a incredible score that really matches the tension greatly and the tone the film is going for as its able to express some fantastic moments of the film without any dialogue needed whatsoever and the score really was masterfully done in the film. As another thing the film does exceptionally well is creating nail biting tension throughout the film. The film does a fantastic job at heightening the tension slowly and then just letting it rise and rise until it eventually explodes and it’s done in such a way that doesn’t seem forced but really keeps you on the edge of your seat constantly. It’s ability to keep you constantly on edge not knowing what’s about to happen and in a constant state of stress like everyone on board is was done in such a smart and well thought out way that kept me engaged the whole time.

Secondly, Now here are the negatives I had with the film. This is a film that’s about an hour and thirty minutes in length. Now I like the short runtime but I felt their was a lot that could of been explained or fleshed out so much better as their are characters that don’t get enough time to really shine as a good amount of characters felt underdeveloped to me. As I was interested in a lot of these people onscreen but I hardly knew anything about them except for Tom Hanks’s character so their was no real emotional attachment I had to any of the other actors involved expect for its lead character. So the characters definitely could of been fleshed out more for me to care more about them as I didn’t really since the film didn’t take the time to properly give them enough time for me to get attached to them. Another problem I had was the paper thin plot line as the film takes place in the ship for the entire duration of this film which is fine theirs tons of great movies that use a single setting for their film and it works greatly. The only problem I had was I didn’t feel any sense of emotional attachment to the characters so right their I don’t have an attachment to care for most of the characters and the plot doesn’t really explore much expect for the fact they have to get to this certain location if their was a bit more layers and depth to the story I probably would of been more invested in the story but it just felt super thin to me.

Lastly, Greyhound is a film that has many many flaws from its underdeveloped characters to its incredibly narrow plot line. Despite the many problems I had with the film it still is one I would tell people to check out as it’s worth seeing for the great lead performance from Tom Hanks to the great technical achievements from the cinematography to the fantastic score that really raises the tension in a well done way. Greyhound may be flawed but it’s worth checking out due to the great committed performances and compelling narrative that is truly eye opening. I recommend people go check this film out.

This film centres around a international convoy   Crosses the dangerous North Atlantic and its mission is to make it to the other side while taking out the enemies and staying alive.

Rated PG - 13 : for war-related action/violence and brief strong language

Tom Hanks : Hanks gives a strong wielded emotionally reserved performance! Hanks just last year delivered one of his finest performances in years with his portrayal of Mr Rodgers. Now he’s playing a Captain of a Ship crossing the North Atlantic and has to lead them to safety. The way Hanks plays the captain is so well done as it’s not over the top as he’s emotionally reserved and very kept to himself. As We learn over the course of the film as he has a lot of personal things he keeps to himself and theirs a few times where he really puts his heart on his sleeve and we see him really soaked up in emotion. When we do see it he opens up his heart and shows himself so emotionally bare and you can see the redness in his eyes and the total vulnerability in his eyes as Tom is committed to every frame he’s in. Theirs other moments where you’ll see him pray a lot as we find out he’s a very religious man and prays in times of panic and you can see the scared sense in his voice and he holds it back but at the same time can say so much but saying so little. It’s not one of Toms all time great performances but it’s a terrific one at that. As he brings such a vulnerability to this character and such depth to him that gets you hooked into him the moment you see him and Tom brings such strong wielded emotion to this character that keeps you engaged all the way through. It’s a emotionally pulled back performance that but is so damn impactful Tom doesn’t try to chew up the scene with over the top emotion but this time is more low key about it and I love that as we see the stages of emotion he goes through in such a subtle way that worked greatly for this character. Overall Tom gives a tremendous performance of a man of desperation faith and heartache and holds it all together Tom is marvellous in this film giving a fantastic performance.

Aaron Schneider : Aaron gives solid direction for his second directed film! The writing is okay by Tom Hanks but it’s the direction by Aaron that really made the film stand out instead of being a by the numbers war film. He was able to create such a tense atmosphere onscreen by building up such high energy tension with the way he was able to show the boats circling them and feeling the emotional stress of not knowing when and how they’ll strike and constantly having the audience on edge. While also being faithful to the events that happened and instead of focusing on more then it can chew it stays on the boat and really focuses on the people aboard and the short time we have with them and their journey on this ship and it felt better as it just focused on them and it doesn’t try to cover to much but it stays very contained to this one ship and it’s crew. He also here fantastic performances out of his entire cast especially from his lead Tom Hanks. What I love about his film is he’s more focused on the characters rather then the story as he likes learning and telling stories about the human condition which he does so well here in such great brutal  honesty. The film is at times stressful, emotional and so well directed Aaron gives once again great direction on this film that could of been so forgettable but it’s his style and way of telling a story that keeps you engaged all the way to the end.
